Music: I didn't actually make the music myself. I misread the rules. Sorry for that. Please disregard the music when scoring.

if it still doesn't work, I'll rebuild it with xna 3.1, so please let me know :)

crashes on startup, I have XNA4 redist and 4 framwork.. usually this happens if you use either XNA GamerServices or XNA network architecture, since it's not supported by the redist, but since I also have the full game studio installed, I dont think thats the reason

ok...I'm gonna do a 3.1 build, then

tayron says ...
May 3, 2011 @ 6:38pm

ok, xna 3.1 build and source is up. let me know if it works:)

tayron says ...
May 3, 2011 @ 6:41pm

in case it crashes and you have the means to build the source, please let me know if you can run it from source. I just ran it on my eeepc and 2 other laptops I don't do dev on, and it runs fine

Still crashing for me.
64bit win 7, XNA 4.0. I didn't try building from source (not sure I have the dev kit for xna)

@Cybs hmmm...can you post your specs? maybe something's below the minimum requirements for XNA...also, can you pastebin the error?

Not sure if this helps much... The program doesnt output anything, it just crashes immediately. Does it need xna to be downgraded?

tayron says ...
May 5, 2011 @ 9:25am

@Cybs ok, I added some debug code and the console shows up now. if there's an error, it should show up in the console.

I don't think xna needs to downgraded. but please go ahead and install 3.1 redist, too. no need to remove 4, just run the 3.1 redist:)

Pretty fun game. I like the background effect.
I have xna 3.1 and .net 3.5 installed and I had no problem playing this game.

Not bad at all :)
I like the fire weapon which forces you to move around. The shield gimmick is too easy to just place over the center.

Very cool - worked fine when I installed XNA Redist, my fault ^^

Best ever twinstick shooter for mouse and keyboard ^^ lots of fun.

This is a pretty cool game but the way the pick-ups are implemented spoils the fun a great deal for me.

Some of the pick-ups are worse than useless, but you're forced to pick them up because the game won't give you any more ammo if you don't. It's particularly irritating the way that new weapons replace the previous weapon and sometimes leave you with hardly any ammo.

The black hole is especially annoying in this regard, because if you don't notice you've picked it up you're likely to drop it on top of the portal, which causes all the enemies to zoom towards it and cause more damage. If you do manage to use it right, then it's a highly destructive weapon, but then you're left with no ammo and nothing to do until the portal deigns to give you another weapon. Also, because the portal is dead centre, the black hole is bound to draw some enemies towards the portal no matter where you place it, and with no ammo you're left with no way to defend the portal.

The background graphics are simple but effective, and I really like them. The foreground graphics aren't as good but they're perfectly serviceable, but it is a shame that you used the same rather ugly sprite for all the weapons except the flamethrower.

I noticed that the flamethrower doesn't seem to work properly: the flames just stay still in one place wherever you fired them (or is that intentional?).

The music is very nice and fits the game really well, but you didn't create it yourself during the competition, which is against the rules. The music does add to the game, and it would be a shame to lose it, but at minimum you should have added a note asking judges to disregard the music when scoring (I see that you did credit the artist on your blog post accompanying the entry, but it's not really obvious).

I'd really like to see an updated version of this game with a few tweaks - it's a good start but the handful of little problems make me not want to play it very much :(. To me, the most obvious improvement would be to make the black hole a 'helper' instead of a 'weapon'.

Really liked the visual presentation.

The controls need a touch of tweaking though, they felt a bit loose to me.

Congrats on submitting to the LD!

@id0001, Endurion, mjb67 I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

@Dark Acre Jack yup, they do seem a bit loose, but I'm not quite sure how to improve them...hmmm

@Dan C wow, that's a lot of feedback! thanks! :)
I'm gonna start with the flamethrower. It's designed to work that way, cause otherwise it would be stupidly overpowered. now, it forces you to actually do something rather than just sit there and flame. flamethrowers are regarded as a close range weapon, so I went with that:)

I'm gonna replace some sprites for the bullets, but I ran out of time. got some sprites ready. as for the actual weapons, I'm going to improve the sprites a bit. they each have individual designs, but since they're so small, it's a bit hard to see the details.

As for the music, my initial thought while reading the rules was that I could use music that wasn't made by me, as long as I had the legal rights to do that. but now I see that extends only to sound samples and stuff like that. I'm going to make the author more visible.

And as for weapons, I'm going to tweak them a bit. the pistol is somewhat decent, albeit a bit slow, but the shotgun is close to useless. It was actually more of a test. And as for the black hole gun, I'm thinking of randomly spawning a weapon after you placed the black hole. Also, I'll stop firing after you pick up the black hole gun, so it won't end up being placed in the wrong position.

Again, thanks for all the feedback!

Fun, frenetic game :) The flamethrower is very powerful though the way it leaves a trace behind.
