Theme: Enemies as Weapons

by Catmoo - Competition Entry

You are the virus, as an infected you can infect others, which will then carry your virus giving them the ability to unknowingly infecting others.

But be careful, watch out for the antibacterial spray!

Made in GameMaker 8 as I cannot code well at all :)

*I apologise for the size of the download, I also apologise if anyone gets lag from the game, it plays fine on my computers but I didn't have a chance to test it on any other machines.

After looking at my game for a second without stress I've come to realise maybe the types of bacteria should switch colours in a later version in the future, as the healthy bacteria current have red tails

*UPDATE* 23/08/2010

Thanks to everyone for the great comments, after reading your comments it's made me realise how little explanation the game gives and it raises way more questions than I thought it would.

After thinking about it, it would have worked nicely if I had the infected bacteria leave a trail of virus behind it, and then if the ones that have been infected do the same, so the spray then removes that when it's hit. There's a lot more I could do with it, but I'm still fairly happy with what it turned out like, even if the main goal is score based.

nice, innovative concept

The antibacterial spray seems to appear at random and without warning, making it basically impossible to dodge, so the game over always felt rather arbitrary with nothing I could do to affect it. With the limited screen space it was hard to tell if my minions/other infected bits were doing much spreading when I wasn't around to see. Simple concept though, and executed well. Good graphics!

Great graphics, gameplay seemed a tiny bit slow, the spray is ruthless! No real defense against it. I'm not really sure I understood why turning the blue things green was doing something other than gaining points, it didn't seem to fight off the spray.

A good concept, but I agree that the player needs some kind of defense against the spray. It's a little too random as it is.

The first time I played the game the spray hit me within a second of starting it... there really needs to be some defense against it.

I'm not sure how this links with the theme either.

@sinalta You're infected and the healthy bacteria are an enemy, you infect them and then they infect each other, effectively using them as weapons.

When I downloaded the zip, it was corrupt and wouldn't open, I will try again

@Andrew Marsh apologies my website seems to be down, hopefully it will be back up soon, I image my partner is messing around with the server

Great and slightly weird soundscape. I didn't really grasp the challenge involved. Seems like you just move around at random, touching bacteria that don't look like you, and then inevitably get eliminated by an instant spray cloud that you have no chance to avoid? One interesting twist could be that player control is transfered to another infected bacterium if your current avatar gets destroyed. That would seem in line with the anonymous/homogenic nature of germs, and the fact that your infectees have all the same abilities as you (except perhaps intelligence). It would require a change in balance though, to provide any kind of challenge when you have a number of backup bodies to use. Maybe some other form of bacteria would fight back in a similar way, reducing your buddy swarm. On another note, it's annoying to have the start button show you the exact same instructions screen that you just viewed voluntarily a moment ago. Either show no instructions when pressing play, or remember that the player has read them earlier. They should not show up automatically the second time you play, either.

Was a bit confused by the instructions as you say that the healthly germs hurt you when they touch you, regardless a nice simple and easy concept, it's nice when you touch one bacteria near a swarm of them that they all of a sudden turn, is cool to infect things!
About the spray, I didn't mind too much, after all you are a bacteria, life isn't easy!
Nice sound effects, loving the title screens atmospheric squelching

@DrPetter hey thanks for the great comment, that is a great idea of changing the game to be more interesting.

Also with the start button show you the instructions I always do that as people don't always read the instructions so I wanted to force them on the player, apologies for that being annoying to you.

Well, I have to say I have trouble seeing the bacteria as enemies, so I'm not so sure about the theme interpretation here, but I guess it's ok. The game was simple and felt kinda aimless since you just go around, spreading the disease. And then maybe at one point a bunch of anti-bacterial powder gets dumped all over you, and you die instantly. That seemed to be my experience. The graphics are pretty nice though.

By the way, you do know viruses and bacteria are two different things, right?

Yes thank you pekuja I'm not stupid I know the difference between viruses and bacteria, but when running with 48 hours to make a game I wanted to make something interesting, but with a time limit constraining me to certain things.

Apologies if you didn't like it, I on the other hand was very pleased with my result.

I liked this game. I would have liked the a pre signal that the spray was coming.

Hey Scramasax that's what I was going to do in audio and have the sound of a can shaking and then a delay on the animation and appearance of the spray.

However I couldn't make a convincing sound of a spray bottle shaking up...suppose I could have said Incoming worms style :)
