The theme for Ludum Dare 15 was Caverns. Ludum Dare 15 had 144 entries.

Cave Jimmy

by SpaceManiac - Competition Entry

(Note: You can't beat the second level! It's just a playground sorta thing)

Cave Jimmy
(c) 2009 Platymuus Software

Arrow keys to move/up to jump!
Spacebar to toggle umbrella!
Enter to go into a level!
Escape to exit level/game!

All my games end up being nothing but lame tech demos.
I had great aspirations for Cave Jimmy! Jimmy is entering
a cave armed only with a parachute-umbrella and some duct
tape and must set off in search of brownie points. Ah
well. At least I earned judging/Mini-LD hosting rights ;)

Thanks to the makers of SDL ( and SDL_Mixer
for making this game's graphics and (lack of) sound

I can't get out of the second level. I have a feeling it's impossible...

Couldn't quite figure out what to do ... but I like the umbrella mechanic, reminds me of the Kirby games :D

brandonman says ...

Not too bad, considering how quickly you got done after your scrapping of the first project!

I feel like I'm trapped in psychedelic pixellaphobiland.

sgstair says ...

It's sorta like a cavern. With trees :)
There could be a game here, but it needs a bit more.

I think you've got a promising concept here, but the umbrella is never really needed (since there are no long jumps and no falling damage), and the game has only one beatable level (although the other one has some good things going for it, like the secret door - assuming it was that, and not a bug). I'm giving you a decent score in the fun category, mostly because I think it would be fun to play if you added some clever level design and made better use of the game mechanics. The graphics could definitely use a touch-up.

Oh, and I like that you used a drawing program for the level editor.

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would have. If there were some spikes and deadly obstacles I could enjoy the platforming quite a lot :)

Endurion says ...

A quite nice start, but as you said, the game is missing.
Could be neat once the level starts using the umbrella.

I like the "mini-level to accomplish something in the bigger level" mechanic, and the umbrella could be cool. Could develop into something cool.

philomory says ...

This is pretty neat. It has potential. Fun to play around with, for all that there isn't a lot to do.

Also, I *know* that the graphics are really simple, but I like them nonetheless. It almost feels like a little kid's drawing or something.

Problem Machine says ...

Nice feel. Too bad it's not a game.

Rectangle with an umbrella? I like it!

Comtemno says ...

Certainly got potential; but just not deadly enough right now.

I like umbrella-gliding!

ippa says ...

mmm.. pixelgfx :]. I really like what you're trying to do.. but feels like I'm keep getting stuck.

lexaloffle says ...

Quite minimal, but enough to demonstrate that floating around a pixelly world with a big red umbrella could be great.
