Hello !
I'm glad to present my game for my first Ludum Dare : Chrysalide
You control a cockchafer larva. You have to eat carrots to gain strength and become a chrysalis, and then a cockchafer. But if you have no more forces, you become again a larva...
Chrysalide is a 2D platformer where you must play with the metamorphoses. Between earth and sky, you must exceed the dangers!

Wow it's great beautiful. The gameplay and idea is also really great.
Love it! Great gameplay, stunning graphics and clear take on the theme. Well done.
Actually, I think this game succeeds in most categories. The controls are definitely weird; I had the same problem with my game. :-) My favorite part is the Audio and Mood, which I give you 5-stars for -- very modern serious music. Also, the art is great. All around, great job!
Truly beautiful game visually and has great sound too. Gameplay works once you get the hang of it - judging when you should be a larva and when you shouldn't is a bit trial and error though. It's only once you already know a level's layout that you really can tell when you need to conserve energy and when you don't. Great job though, I really enjoyed it!
Thanks for the comments !
Yes, I agree the instructions should be easier. I made it when I was very tired...
You become again a larva when you don't have wings (icon on the top left of the screen) anymore. And you get wing when you eat carrots.
Thank you again guys !
I really enjoyed this game, it was a little confusing at first but fun once i understood how to play it
Once I figured out exactly what to do, I loved this. The music and visuals work exceedingly well together to make a really distinctive mood. Excellent!
took me a while to figure out what i was doing but once i knew it felt quite natural
Amazing graphics and sound! :D
My Constructive Criticism: It lacks features.
i was not expecting that - it was a very good game making great use of theme - i never had so much fun as a mosquito - nice job
Thanks for the comments !
Yes it lacks features, but I had no more time :s
I thought put a bird which can eat the larva and the cockchafer, you should transform yourself in the chrysalis for not be eating.
The chrysalis must have a gameplay...
Really nice graphics and idea.
As an insect lover, I loved the game!
I just wished I had more control over the insect when flying.
Un bon petit jeu pas pique des hannetons ^^
I enjoyed this game A LOT, it was pretty simple to work out what you had to do, the controls were straightforward. Loved the graphics and the music, especially the splat sound effect, made me laugh! Well done!
I liked this game. The art and the idea are really neat. I didn't much like the audio and larva movement seemed a bit too slow, though.
Very simple and quick to load! Sound effects are great, love the cockchafer larva
Wow! Definite favourite entry so far. Might not mean much since it's also like the third game I rate, but knowing me I'm fairly sure it will stay in the top.
Gorgeous graphics. Simple but stylised in a very clean way. The noise did a lot for it. The changing sky colour towards the end of each level was a lovely touch as well.
The music and sound effects fit in too, and were well done. Perhaps there should've been a flying sound and even some rain, but that's just nitpicking.
The increasing difficulty was nicely balanced for such a short game, which made it take a while to complete anyway. This was sort of the intention behind our entry this year as well, but due to not feeling well we never really had the time to polish it or even finish all our puzzles.
Reminded me a lot of the game Flem — yes, one of its devs was on our LD team, but I'm not personally part of the team that made that game, so I'm allowed to say so. c;
it was difficult towards the end, but in a good way. It made me stubbornly want to finish it. And I did!
And of course the fact that you only had to restart the current level and not the entire game upon failure might be worthy of a little extra praise when it comes to LD games. ;p
Loved it! <3
The art is awesome, the game is fun and the mood is great
I really like this one. The graphics and the feel to the game are great! Well done!
Liked the way you had to conserve your changes to proceed and the visuals and music were nice and worked together. Did have an issue where the menu and instructions seemed to be cut off on my screen even if I tried the different resolutions.
Loving the meditative art style and music.
The larva is frustratingly slow, but I assume this is intentional.
Good game and it actually feels quite polished. It is made a bit too hard, though, by the controls. Especially moving is a bit too fast (or the screen scrolling is too slow) so you often can't see and anticipate what's ahead.
There's probably a few frame rate issues on the web version but other than that I like the art style and concept a lot plus I loved that eating animation.
I had a real hard time getting into this game, because I didn't realise the controls screen was a choice (I thought it was just instructions), and then I missed the tutorial screen due to hammering away to try and get through. A prompt to select would probably be best, and an option to return to the instructions screen from the game.
Once I did get through with the right controls and understanding what I had to do, I was glad I had, though! This game has an excellent use of the theme, and was solid in all the categories! That final level was hard as hell, but it did feel rewarding when I finally got through it!
Congratulations on your first Ludum Dare, and on making such a fine game in 48 hours!
Very well drawn! Yes, the gameplay is simple but it's fun and challenging enough. The controls are responsive, the music fits and the sfx are nice. A very good entry all around!
Poetic, good looking, good mood, just as difficult as needed... Very well done ! :)
Very nice compo entry! The graphics, music, controls were all great and felt polished.
err, I didn't get past the instructions screen, tried about everything, but no go... Nice graphics though...
Hello terop,
When you say instruction screen, it's the screen with keys :"wasd" and "zqsd" ?
If it's that, you should click on your configuration (french keyboards are "azerty", so I code for french peoples too :))
If it's the next instruction screen, you just need to press space for play.
You tried which release? web or standalone ?
Took me a couple of tries before I figured out why I became a larvae again, but after that I got rollin'. Beautiful graphics and great audio all around. The game was challenging... at the fourth level I struggled big time. Had to give up as I'm short on time, but will probably come back and see if I can't get further. Great game - good job!
Your game has been rated by our team member Antonin Charvat (music composer). Here is his comment: Great idea, too bad there is no autosave more often.
Awesome audio and graphics. Very tight controls. Very simple mechanic. One problem is that the camera is not zoomed in enough to give you a complete sense of control when you're flying.
Good job!

Mini Submission FAQ
TEAMS: Teams entering the Jam should pick a single representative to submit your game, or create a team specific account you can share. We currently do not support Team Voting, but sharing an account and together playing and rating games is acceptable.
CAN I ENTER BOTH EVENTS?: You should pick 1 event, whichever you think it’ll do better in. If the idea is strong, and everything plays well enough, you can go Compo. If you’re a perfectionist, and would prefer people to play a more polished game, do the Jam. Historically, more games are entered in the Compo, but with more people and more time, Jam games have the potential to be better (that doesn’t mean they are). Many solo participants do enter the Jam.
If you made 2 games, unfortunately, the website doesn’t support multiple submissions per user. To submit your 2nd game, you will have to make a 2nd account. Only do this if you made 2 games. Alternatively, if one game is better than the other, then consider just entering the better game.
CAN I KEEP WORKING UNTIL THE DEADLINE?: Yes! Immediately after the 48 or 72 hours, we do something called Submission Hour. As the name suggests, it’s an extra hour for you to package, upload, and submit your games. If there were catastrophic issues trying submitting your game, or you misunderstood how submissions work, that’s okay. It happens. We’re flexible. If you need advice, check with the folks on IRC. If you need an admin, get in touch.
CAN I KEEP WORKING ON MY GAME?: Oh definitely! You should! But for the sake of judging, keep the Compo or Jam version around. You can include a link to the Post-Compo/Post-Jam version of your game on your games page, but sure your main links are the original version.
PORTS: Ports to other platforms can be done after the deadline. That said, the sooner you finish your port, the sooner people can play your game, improving your chances of placing in the final results. For best results, provide a Web version of your game, or a Windows version with no dependencies. Also be sure to rate at least 20 games to improve your visibility (Coolness).
MY GAME CRASHES, IS UNBEATABLE, OR I MADE A TYPO: We allow you to fix crashes, win condition, or tiny bugs after the deadline. In a sense, this is like “porting” to support more players. We leave this open to interpretation, but generally speaking your game should be identical to the game you submitted. No new features, just fixing mistakes you should have caught had you been better rested.
MY GAME DOESN’T SHOW UP: If you can’t find your game, it’s usually because the URL to your downloads are missing ‘http://‘. Fix your URLs (http://mysite.com/mygame.zip) and you will show up. Alternatively, if you just posted it, wait a minute. The cache may not have refreshed yet.
NOT LOGGED IN?: If you get a message about not being logged in, even though you are, it’s because your web browser cached the non-logged in page. You can fix this by either refreshing your cache or clearing your cache. CTRL+F5 in many browsers. Chrome is a bit more work. Press F12 to enable Developer Mode, then you can right click on the refresh button and select “Empty Cache and Hard Reload”. This option is unavailable if you are not in Developer Mode.
really enjoyed this one, the instructions screen made the game seem harder than it actually was! May be worth simplifying in future, or maybe i'm an idiot. Good job!
