(Since the blog link is currently broken, you can find it here if you want to judge "Community" :: )

The Hug-Monster (-o^_^)-o can never get enough love or hugs, and is always happy to see you. Unfortunately, it's a little too excitable and at times doesn't seem to know its own strength.

You on the other hand are small and fragile, and most definitely want nothing more than to be left alone, especially from the big, scary Hug-monster!

How long can you avoid its warm, snuggly, and loving arms of death? Find out in this classic platformer!

The Hug Monster

The game is a Unity project.
- Unity3D - Written all in C# using MonoDevelop
- 2dToolKit libraries (Not included)
- Photoshop CS3

In my declaration I mentioned using 2DToolKit to programmatically create sprite animations, but I'm not sure whether its license allows me to include it as plain text in the Unity project. It's available in the Unity Asset Store, but at cost.

If that's not kosher for the Compo, then I'll happily resubmit it as a Jam entry.

(12/22/2011 - Uploaded bug fix for issue reported by caranha -- and then a bug fix for the bug fix.)

The controls felt really finicky, otherwise grand!

That smiling thing will be in my nightmares :-P. No, imagine: a *HUGE* bus-sized smiling monster, constantly flapping his gigantic arms, to squeeze you in a fatal hug with misleading cuteness and a force strong enough to throw away whole ... stuffs!

I liked that in some levels I was able to "defeat" Hug Monster by tricking him into running off the level.

The ending was awesome.

Overall an awesome game. Lot of fun, the way the character accelerated as you kept moving was pretty cool, but some of the jumps were very tricky because of it.

Thank you everyone who's given feedback on gameplay elements in particular. In my evenings I'm working to polish up some of the rough edges you're all pointing out and plan to re-release it as a more finished product with more of the features I considered "nice to haves" while I was concepting this.

And for those who enjoyed it, thank you for your kind words. :)

Re-release *outside* the LD site, that is. Obviously I won't change anything about the linked project above. :)

Found the controls pretty awkward to use, bit of making them a bit less frustrating and it's spot on :)

Hey! Thanks for pointing me to your game!

The hug monster is so cute <3, although I was a bit sad every time I saw him happily jump off a cliff to his death :~(. Poor hug monster.

I liked the idea, but I'm having difficulties playing the game. First, the controls are really sticky. It is very hard to gauge how much you need to run and jump to get atop a platform, and, when you fail, your guy gets stuck in mid air.

Second, the fourth level (third?) is a bit buggy. It is the first one where the hug monster does not begin behind you. When I try to reach for the house, it floats to the skies and disappears. Then if I die to try again, the house is not there anymore and the level is not winnable :-( </3

Hope you can solve your problems with sound, and thanks for talking about other people's games! :-D

A suggestion:
The character should face where the player is pointing, not where he is running too - it gets a bit easier to tell your brain that the character is trying to stop that way

Hey there caranha!

I realized last night what would happen in level 4 too late to fix it. You're right that there's a bug, *but* It was actually designed to float away if you hit it with your head, but what I forgot was to reset it when you restart the level. If you jump down onto it from the top you can actually see the platform fall down. Part of me likes this, but part of me also doesn't. Maybe sfx would indicate that it floated away because you bonked it out of reach?

Anyway, the "I can't win the level anymore" has been resolved in the version I'm working on currently, but I don't think I can really submit that now and still be in-bounds in terms of the compo rules. Would a bug fix like that be by-the-book?

I have no idea, to be honest. I would say that a simple bug like that (level not resetting) should be ok, but I don't know what is the official position.

The best part of this game is luring him to a pit. Also the way you actually need him to solve some of the obstacles, I think that could've been explored more.

Good idea! Unfortunately I fell that this game suffer for it's bad controls, But coold :D you managed to make a game with and ending and everything!

Controls and collisions feel a little glitchy. It's common to get stuck after a bad jump in one of the platforms. Other than that, gameplay feels good and the hug monster does look cute.

The graphics are neat and cute, but the acceleration mechanic really frustrates me!

Dec 27, 2011 @ 1:30am

I like the graphics and animations, but the character movement seems a little... uncontrollable. Also, it doesn't really innovate the theme. But good overall! (maybe it also could've used some sound)

I loved the monster. (/0 ^_^)/0
The whole game feels very neat. The control using aceleration really helps beating the plainness. It's a pity that there isn't a background music or sound effects.
Anyway awesome job for a 48hour entry!

Hah, I'm glad you pointed me here, at the risk of missing this gem. Excellent work and love love love the 2D Unity.

Nice game... I was stuck in the level with the "monster cage" and the two levers. There was some glitches (in one level the monster skyrocketed through a solid wall, as if it was "building strenght" while waiting for me.
Overall, good work!

The controls were a bit off and I'd get stuck while jumping but otherwise not bad, not bad at all.

The hug monster is kind of terrifying?

Really liked it! Nice concept.
