December 16th-19th 2011 :: Theme: Alone
Dread Maze.
You are a hero battling in a never-ending dungeon, all alone. Click to move. Automatically attack monsters in your way or pick up items in your path. Get to the goal in the bottom right.
Playable as an applet.
******* The applet flickers on Mac because Apple borked applet support. Instead, use the downloadable version. *********

Fun sounds... the theme could be put more on the foreground though. The boss killed me!
What I missed in this was some visible stats for what you had picked up, I enjoyed the soft camera movement though, it was soft on the eyes!
I really like how simple is to play the game, but on the other hand being so simple goes a bit against fun sometimes.
Well, it seems you cant start writing a comment while you are still playing, I got killed by a skeleton I think xD
I fought the first boss and I won :D
I enjoyed it! But after 10 levels is repetitive and stops being fun. I like graphics and sound. There was a moment playing that I could not move forward. I think the labyrinth kept going down but the camera didn't move.
the noises were VERY annoying, but the game itself was pretty good fun
I thoroughly enjoyed the game, I found myself getting pretty overpowered on potions after the first boss fight, no complaints but I walked away for a sandwich on a level I hadn't cleared and I died >< I'd love a pause button, one of those and a way to check my stats and this would be amazing
Ran into that bug with the dungeon not going far enough down for me to explore, I suggest locking the camera at least 3 blocks away from the main character to prevent this, because it happened to me on the bottom and blocked me from leaving the level
I think I would have liked this entry better if it didn't have performance issues. I played it on my Windows Vista desktop and found that as I uncovered more and more of the maze that the mouse became less and less responsive. Once the maze was almost fully uncovered I could hardly move anywhere, which made it difficult to win fights that should have been easy.
I like the idea, but as it stands, the game punishes you for progress in a way it really wasn't intended to.
dr_soda, can I ask what level you were in, and system
specs? And were you playing the Applet? I haven't heard of performance problems from anyone else. Thanks!
Hey demonpants,
I used the web applet on Windows Vista in Chrome. The hardware specs for the machine:
Core 2 Duo 3.16GH,
8GB Ram,
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT.
Obviously not a monster, but should be sufficient.
As for when I noticed the problem, it was on the 2nd floor. The larger the floor and the more of it I explore, the worse the issue becomes. If I make it to a new floor, the severity of the input lag drops precipitously until that new floor is more fully explored.
Interesting. Mac was the only thing screwed up AFAIK. Hm... perhaps you can try downloading the JAR (second link, the one for Mac) and running that directly? Should help. Thanks, dr_soda!
The game is fun. The sound is a bit suspicious, though. The mooing when the boss dies doesn't sound as if it was created by you. Also most sound files in the JAR tell they were created in 2008. And where's the sourcecode download?
Hm, I'll look into that. They shouldn't be from 2008. The cow sound is an edited sound from the net, which I figured was fine. I can record a mooing sound with my mouth if desired. :-P
I don't think that using content from the web is convered by the 48 hour compo rules, even if edited. Creating sounds and graphics is part of the challenge. Using stuff from the web defeats the purpose. Sure, its just a fun contest and all... yet still, the rules are set. The jam is there for those who don't want to adhere to the compo rules.
not much strategy involved, which make the game pretty easy. But mixing rogue-like and mazes is a great idea and I had much fun despite I felt quite invinvible
Great game, I couldn't beat the boss in second try... :P I guess I'll have to try again!
I really like this game. I didn't get to play it a bunch (there's < 3 minutes left on the judging clock as i type this), but I'm going to play it some more after I finish typing this. The mechanics and the audio play really well together, imo, to make a fun little casual crawler.
