December 16th-19th 2011 :: Theme: Alone
[Greeble] is an HTML5 game where you are the captain of a crashed spaceship. You are ALONE but need some help to survive. Collect the cryo-keys to activate the stasis pods in order to free your friends.
Features pixel-perfect, non-grid platforming, bounce-pads, transparent glass tubes, a fun retro "scan line" effect, silly AI followers and A KITTEN, your objective is to use the arrow keys to navigate to the exit, where you will be rewarded with a trampoline party!
I had so much fun making this game. I even had time to hang out with friends, go for a hike, and decorate my house for the holidays! There is a lot of room for improvement but overall I'm really happy with the final product.
Created using ippa lix's wonderful jawsjs game engine.
The word "greeble" comes from the original Star Wars ILM special effects artists who used the term to describe generic "tech" bits and pieces that adorn sci-fi hulls. There are thousands of greebles in this game's level art.
Ludum Dare is so much FUN.

Weird... when I played it earlier The player's movement is slow. But when I played it again again the movespeed is significantly faster. Got to say I prefer the slower one. Also, the music should loop instead of stopping after one playback. Nice atmosphere at the game btw :)
great graphics but didnt hear any sound for some reason.. good stuff :)
Outstanding piece of work, good style, fun character animations.
Could do with some SFX, but the drone soundtrack was a great atmosphere catalyst.
I loved the graphics. The game lagged a lot on my computer, unfortunately.
Nice game, but a little lacking on the fun side. The absence of danger, I think. But good work!
Very nice graphics, but a little bit lacking on the gameplay side. I didn't read the text below first, so I was disappointed that the characters that follow you aren't an actual gameplay element.
The game certainly has atmosphere! :)
Great visual aesthetics. Where is the sound? And why last LD's theme :P.
A little lagging, but you certainly show that there's a huge potential in HTML5 games. Love the background music & level design/ artwork.
Amazing artwork, really well done! I like the parallaxing background and the subtle horizontal lines. Controls are smooth and simple on Chrome. You've got some great HTML5 skills there!
I was fairly disappointed when the followers turned out to be completely irrelevant to the gameplay. I think I would have liked less graphics in favor of having them do SOMETHING, even if it's just stand on switches while you pass through a door.
had a fair bit of random slowdown that made moving in the game unenjoyable (firefox 8.0.1, latest version of OSX).
Pretty neat! The graphics and level design are pretty cool, but it doesn't really use the theme much. Also the framerate was all over the place - sometimes really smooth but most of the time it was pretty sluggish.
That said, I did finish it and it was pretty fun, so well done.
Nice graphics but other than that it's not very fun or aloneish.
Doesn't work properly on FF, only Chrome.
Feels like you're using a fixed timescale update, as there's a lot of random slowdown.
I really like your animation style and illustrations.
The idea of having mindless followers is really neat, but I would have liked to have seen a use for them, such as bait for monsters, fodder for traps, or perhaps to take over as the main character if you die yourself.
Really enjoyed the art style, and as others have said, I experienced a lot of random slowdowns while playing
Good platformer. Left/right controls are too responsive. Love the following NPCs, though that kind of breaks the "alone" part. Pixel art and scanlines work nice, but a little variety might have helped. Kitten easter egg is a nice touch, though easy to find. Score fits nicely, but some SFX may have helped. Didn't have any audio/lag issues (Win7x64SP1,FF).
Nice style, the eerie music created a great mood. Not really challenging, though.
I found the kitty! But that was before clipping got turned back on.
the audio and graphics really work well to create atmosphere, the game ran pretty poorly on my computer unfortunately though.
Amazing atmosphere! I loved the parallax background and convoluted level.
Otherwise it felt like a good tech demo, not an overly fun game. But again, excellent graphics, and you got my "mood" vote for sure.
Great job overall, the artwork was amazing and the audi went with it but I think there needed to be more sfx in the audio. It was fun but a little too easy. Great job
Thanks for all the kind words folks!
QUESTION: do you think this game shows enough promise to be worth of me expanding it into a full game with multiple levels, plot, battles and enemies?
Yeah, I also experienced the slowdown. Reading your blogs... I am now incredibly interested in how this was put together. I know nothing of HTML5 and all that jazz... so this is pretty dang rad.
Overall it was a nice game, though it felt lacking in certain area's... Not much in the to-do section other then trying to "catch 'em all". Also I'm using Firefox to view it and I think I isolated the cause of the FPS drop. When the background image was still the FPS were normal. (around the map edges) When you got away from the map edge and the background started scrolling the FPS would drop. Don't know if this is the cause for everyone but that's what happened on my browser.
The funny thing about slowdowns is that on my 5 year old computer I get 60fps on ALL browsers - tested in IE, Chrome, FF, Safari, and all stay silky smooth 60fps the entire time. Thet said, when I play it on my netbook it runs pretty slow.
I bet it you update your browser to the latest and greatest version the fps will double, since recent versions use hardware compositing for canvas while 6 month old browsers do it all in software.
Solid platformer, great art. Could use some hazards to make it more challenging though.
Just the "Web" link would've done. In fact, the "Source" link is not terribly accurate, is it? ;)
Your question is a bit broad to answer. Right now, it's a fairly plain platformer, and you can take it in a hundred different directions that involve “multiple levels, plot, battles and enemies‘.
What this has to offer right now is a lot of style and mood. That's definitely something you can expand on. It looks absolutely gorgeous, but I did feel that the audio intro and cryo-themed story were a bit more grim than / out of line with the vibrant colors used in the artwork.
A lot laggy with my config, but abstract of that, I had some fun playing this game, find the way out, meet the kitten, that stuff... Really well done, dude !
But... With a little more time than 48h, I'm shure you'd notice the potential for the "friends" to help exit. Like stand on buttons, or help jumping, somethings like that.
As a lot of people have said already, slow, but cool, and the first HTML5 game I've ever seen. When I picked up the first guy, I thought "Wow, that's some great AI!" but then realized I was complementing myself.
Camera was a little shakey at times, not very fun but cool graphically and stylistically. I know that the blocks would have been hard to program :)
It's cool that it's HTML5. Check out PixieEngine some time.
Great! Not entirely convinced it matches the theme, but awesome none the less :)
Great! Not entirely convinced it matches the theme, but awesome none the less :) Isn't the source link meant to link to the source code? I'd love to peruse it ;P
Great work with the graphics and presentation, but it feels like there could be much more to it though. I didn't see the hidden kitten, I may have to have another go to find it.
awesome, found the kitten in paranoia XD, like "exit" NOES IT'S A LIE, there's another road, i'll check that first
love the chasing guys, found a small glitch with them in that player sprite's direction depends on movement direction, while the chasing dudes' sprites are only updated when on the ground, so if you move forward, jump, and THEN move backward, you'll be moving back and facing backwards but the guys chasing you will keep facing forward while moving backwards, also did not seem to hear any audio in the xmas version, and the regular had it non-looping, which is too bad because it's a good track i think
overall i really like it, but i think you could like use this as part of a rhythmic puzzle game? like you'd have to hit switches with certain timing, and the beat of the music could help with the timing ;)
Didn't really have much to do with the theme, and le sigh on another platformer. Good graphics.
Nice graphics! I found the kitten (who ever follows a sign marking EXIT >>>>?) and all my friends, and though it didn't seem to serve any purpose to have them mimicking me, it did make me want to do dances in mid-air for them.
I like the atmosphere of the game and the controls are fairly solid. Got a little lost on what I was supposed to do however.
Interesting. I wish the clones did something gameplay-wise, but it piqued my interest pretty well. Amazed this was all done in HTML5.
There's a bug where when you walk off a cliff you can jump in mid air.
Oh man, was I confused when I started playing this. :D
At first I though the guys inside the pods were pursuing me and I'd get a game over if touched. The I didn't realize at first that the keys were for the pods and not doors that I wasn't finding. Controls were fine, and the pathfinding was great, but there were some weird spots where I couldn't move due to collision troubles. The scanline effect is quite good.
Trampoline partyyyy!
Pretty plain gameplay, but I do dig the art style.
it was moody and following the theme until you picked up your first friend then it was just unfitting music as you jumped all around. +1 for html5 though

Certainly felt "alone". Found the kitten first try due to my perceptive/antagonistic nature. Could have used a little more to jog the "fun" along, felt a quite empty.
That could've been largely due to the constant unpredictable slowdown I was experiencing though :(
