PsySal says ...

Truly awesome. I'm even giving you 5 for towlr!

dock says ...

This is really quite astonishing! :D

Doches says ...

Absolutely brilliant. Seriously.

Sophie Houlden says ...

wow, hard to comment without spoiling it for others, I'll say what you have done doubles as a gaming challenge as well as being entertaining. and I love it :)

erik says ...

This is probably the most creative LD48 game entry I've ever seen. It's mind blowing. Well done.

dave1 says ...

After reading the comments I thought I was prepared for something amazing and still I was blown away. That was a sweet game. I still can't believe it.

matrin says ...

Awesome game. :D

MrPhil says ...

Very Clever! Love the cat part!

Hamumu says ...

I'm doing N/A for graphics - the graphics aren't legal by LD standards! But that's alright, it's worth it for the end result.

I too will avoid spoiling things, but just want to comment on a unique element here. There's a distinct incentive not to die, which is really interesting. It's almost like the game is for money or something - you really feel like there's something on the line. Okay, not quite money, but it's interesting anyway. I should know, because I never even knew there was a 'cat event', since I had died just before it! I'm glad I checked again after people commented on it (so yay for mild spoilers!).

crc says ...

I liked: Brilliant.

Could improve: -

demonpants says ...

I was skeptical from the screenshots and then from the overwhelmingly positive responses, but I have to say they're well deserved. Bravo. You've definitely done something unique here.

HybridMind says ...

very frustrating.. in a great way! I played this thing for SO LONG and still I can't quite get to the end. I need to take a break, because I do want to see what happens if I can make it. hilarious in so many ways.. congrats on making something quite original!

(posted next day: DAMN YOU...! I am still trying to play this thing and get further than before. I of course don't even know if there is an end but I have made it further than ever before and I believe your game caused me actual stress as I attempted to get through the cone maze. Not sure what makes this so compelling but like Hamumu said, there is a "distinct incentive not to die". So.. congrats again. ;)

dessgeega says ...

does an amazing job of sounding just like every terrible game video on youtube.

ondrew says ...

I was blown away, when I started the game.

Kudos for not spoiling anything in your blog.

nilsf says ...

I'm glad you ported it to OS X, IMO this is the must see game of the competition. Not much to add, the others have already said it all.

jlnr says ...

Love it :D Bonus points for the Mac port. And what was that breakfast? It looked undefinable, but healthy.

Devon says ...

What I find amazing is even if you strip away the wonderful postmodern presentation, the game is still good. I keep wanting to play to beat the next part, like that helicopter flash game.

Hilarious and a truly enjoyable experience. Every little surprise adds to the illusion!

Morre says ...

This game is absolutely brilliant. I'm amazed by the amount of creativity behind this game.

That being said, it does stretch the rules a bit, as hamumu pointed out.

I don't really thing the gameplay is that much fun, but that's not the point, is it? Also, I'm impressed by the strength of will you showed in not spoiling it beforehand!

Top marks for innovation and humor! :)

Jonathan Whiting says ...

Huge props for the initial *huge* surprise upon starting this off, fantastic, original, brilliant. I can't really fault it actually, there's a lot that would be irritating were it a more normal game, but it all kind of fits the idea well.

I guess the only real flaw is once you've got over the awesome concept there's just not a lot left to enjoy in it, but despite how that might sound I'm just nitpicking, it's a beatiful thing.

dstrysnd says ...

Simply astounding. I popped my monocle.

Rara Racer Mac Build

Posted by
Thursday, December 18th, 2008 8:36 pm

I’ve made a direct mac port, it’s available here:

OSX 10.5 (2.3MB)

It’s identical to the windows one. I had been meaning to tidy up both a little bit before this release, but I haven’t had time.

Also, I’d like to say that I had a lot of fun this competition and, though it took some not inconsiderable amount of time time, and also playing through what entries I could; some really beautiful stuff came out of this competition. I look forward to the next one…

Ah, it was work, but it’s more or less done.

Download here for windows. (2MB)

Download here for OSX 10.5 (2.3MB) (added 19th dec)

The source is here. (2MB)

Permanent homepage is here.

I’ll have a mac version cobbled together within the week.

Used Allegro/C/The GIMP/FMod Ex/a microphone/audacity/milkytracker/sfxr/Dev-CPP.  Used two samples from soundsnap.com.

2 more things left

Only have two more things on my list of 9 left (which, thankfully enough, are more or less the same thing).  Nothing new to show for it just yet, though. :/

Some progress

I actually have made some progress.  I decided to forego aggression and remove bullets.  Of my list of nine things, I have two-and-a-half done so far.  Not bad, I guess, but…more to do…

Rara Racer, Day 2

Posted by

Morning of day two.  Have an itemized list of 9 things to do.  Doable things.  So: I’m on track then.

But first, breakfast:

I can has collision?

needs more collision, but…reasonably okay progress for the first day…will add basic sound effects, then catch me some sleep.

First screenshot

title screen

It might not be clear from the above screenshot, but it’s been a tough landmark to get to!  Okay, I’m only clocking in at 366 lines of code, and I haven’t even started on the game yet proper (no graphics done yet, for instance), but I’m finally in a good position to make progress.

First though: dinner!

breakfast on the first morning of rara racer

Just woke up a couple of hours ago, and saw the theme. Ferociously busy, but have an idea.  Will try get the engine written today, add some game tomorrow…nothing coded yet though :/

and: breakfast (wip shot):
