“Saldanha” is the name of a subway station in Lisbon, named after the Portuguese Duke João Carlos de Saldanha Oliveira e Daun.
It is also the name of my Ludum Dare Compo entry, which turned to be a psychedelic action rythm-based shooter set in an hypnosis trance.

Now with AI!

I finally finished a AI for my game Dots In Space…! The game has a good amount of resemblance to the Worms games but it is in space and gravity of planets and the sun are affecting projectiles.

The idea for the AI  was pretty simple, it should not calculate the shots and instead shoot and then adjust based on where it flies to.

Turns out that is much harder then it sounds, while I tried to get AI sane it almost drove me insane. It is now pretty complex and even has basic memory.

There are now 3 difficulties you can choose for the AI, it is default on with Normal difficulty and will shoot as soon as you take your first shot like a real gentleman. You can simply switch if off in the menu for local multiplayer.

New are also a option for indestructible other planets and the option that planets rotate around the sun in both directions.

This is my second game jam, my second game at all !!!. My goal was the same as in the last Ludum Dare, learn, have at the end of the weekend something that I can call MY GAME! and of course, get feedback and comments on my game, and improve thanks to it! I had worked alone in this game, made with Unity and visual Studio for scripts, all “3D Models” are made with Unity basic geometry and sound effects recorded with my phone with no edit (i had help from my girlfriend making noises on the phone).

  • What went right?

– Finish another game
–  I managed to complete the levels and the amount of powers that i planned from the beginning
– Not much more

  • What should improve?

– Learn some 3D modeling and Animating (just spheres and squares deformed aren’t that good looking  )
– Particles Systems (was my first time working with it)
– General control feeling (Jump Force / Gravity / Speed / Camera Rotation)
– Camera Collision (this was on my “to do” list since friday night )
– Add background sound/music
– Tutorial or In-Game Hints (Some people cant pass some levels / Read Spoiler Section if you get stuck)

  • What can i learn from the experience?

– Maybe “Unity terrains” is not the best for platformers
– Planning more time to polish and make game look better (like add more stuff in the scene)
– what more? let me know on Twitter

Qwer City still stands.

Enjoy this frenetic & frustrating mix of arcade/tower defense.
ALL content was made from scratch, including soundtrack.

For best performance install it, runs slow on Gamejolt.

When I try to join jam time was it.

Rushed to draw gameart after saw end time , there are 18 sprites . I searched gameboy colors then watched gimp indexed color tutorial . The game idea come while itching 😀 . I used my old object pooling script. Coding was easy because of game isnt complex and the font isnt mine

  • bfxr = for sfx
  • Unity3d
  • GIMP
  • LMMS for terrible music

What went right

  • Game art was easy ,it was 2-bit
  • I’m late , Even so timing was good
  • I had fun while don’t sleep for 48 hours

What went wrong

  • Making music was  terrible I spent 2 hours for 4 seconds loop
  •  BUG:When pressed X all npcs go out from house
  • Can’t added breeding and parent-child
  • Hand drewn wronglyHAND1  ====> HAND3
  • I forgot simple unity codes (-.-) watched few tutorial for those
  • UI isnt pixel perfect
  • Idiot charging cable disconnected therefore record didnt encode , I had to use this tool for broken record
  • COULDN’T  BUILD TO WEB

Try out Caelium Alpha

Ever wanted to imagine about small worlds? In Caelium Alpha, you can build an orrery of the planetary system of your dreams.

Please note that the current build of the game has a strange bug where many planets will get plopped at once and cause strange, but cool formations. I intend to fix this in a post-LD version of the game. I’ll also try to add the ability to plop moons, which is not currently available. Thanks for your patience.

Ludum Dare Principle

Wednesday, April 26th, 2017 5:30 pm

Game jams is not a best place to show your OOP patterns knowledge. And well, code written on LD has no chance to win «Best Architecture Ever» award. Just look at this God-object class of our Protolife game:

God object class on Ludum Dare

Class with ~1K lines and 26 dependencies? I would have a serious talk with myself about this code.

But good practices still make life easier even if they take longer. This is how we decided to define our micro-buildings. Here is a simple turret:

Protolife small turret

More powerful turret:

Protolife t3 turret

«d» means «blue block», «e» means «yellow block», capitalized letter means «anchor point», e.g. turret muzzle.

Yeah, hardcoding all the coords would be much simpler, but this pattern system allowed us to quickly add new buildings – as fast as we invented them. This part would be first candidate for DRYing – so we DRYed it.

Do you guys use the best practices in your code? SOLID? GRASP? Unit tests?

Until Tomorrow

Restless – DONE

I can’t sleep anymore.
Come check the game out here:

It’s at the very last day that I finally knew what I was going to do with the theme.

Uptil then I had no real good idea for the gameplay, and I was just making a part of the map and characters without having much of a clue what it would be for.

Thankfully I finally found some inspiration, and I had but one day to finalize it. I wish I had more time to do more thing with it, but don’t we all?

All in all I’m feeling pretty good about Restless. It was nice that I finally was able to jam again after a very long hiatus.

It’s a good coming back and a good test to my mastery of Unity. It’s sometimes important to recall myself that I can ship a game, and I might need to redo it more often.

So, hopefully, see you next LD!
