Third times a charm

I participated in two previous LDs and never finished them.  I stumbled on doing the art and content creation so I’m going to think about my art style ahead of time and aim for something with less content.  For the art style I’m thinking of going with flat shaded low-poly models if I’m doing 3D or attempt a pixel art style again. It depends on the theme of course.

  • Unity (C# scripts)
  • bfxr
  • Photoshop
  • Blender or Maya

Hello! This is the second Ludum Dare I am participating in. Last time I didn’t finish so I’m going to try to keep it simple this time and use tools I’m familiar with. My goal this time is to have the core experience playable a few hours into the competition and go from there.
  • Code: XNA or Unity
  • Graphics: Paint.NET, Blender
  • Audio: bfxr for effects and inudge for music (if I have time)
  • Misc: cooktimer (to combat my perfectionist tendencies)

Not going as planned

My concept is pretty simple, there are whispers coming through dimensional gates and attacking a city. In order to save the city you must power the shield generators (bottom right) by throwing whispers at it via a grappling hook. Every generator that is powered up is also attached to one or more additional gates and the more generators powering a gate, the faster the whispers are. When the grappling hook gets the Whisper, it starts rotating around the city and you have to time when to release it.

Well the implementation is not going as planned partially due to learning pygame at the same time instead of going with something I’m more familiar with and also a bit of procrastination. Hopefully I’ll have some time to finish it up but it’s not looking likely.

Lunch time

After waking up things have been progressing slowly but I definitely think it was a good decision to create all the sprites before starting on the code. So now I’m eating lunch and get back to implementing my core gameplay mechanics. Hope to have something to show soon.

Dimensional Whisper progress

I have finally settled with an idea I’m happy with after multiple false starts with other ideas. So far I’ve got a few levels designed on paper and some silhouette sprites which may end up being the final ones. I don’t think my idea is too ambitious but implementation is progressing slowly since I’m learning pygame at the same time. The sprite on the left is a ‘whisper’ and they spawn from gates (middle), which are powered by power generators (right). I’m going to get some sleep and hope to finish all the core gameplay by the end of the day.

My workspace

I’ve got a simple setup including two large whiteboards (not pictured) and dual monitors. I’m not sure how much I’ll use my Wacom tablet though but I set it up just in case.

First LD!

I’m really looking forward to this weekend since it will be the first time I’m participating in a LD. I haven’t decided if I want to use XNA or pygame but I probably won’t be using any additional libraries unless physics is involved or something.

Some software I might use

  • sfxr
  • musagi (I’ve never composed music before!)
  • GIMP
  • Blender
