Building a Toy Factory on Stream…

Again I had to start late, but I have my idea down, and made some great progress in the 5 hours I managed to put in so far…

This is the “concept art” that I started with for my game… The graphics have come a little way since this, and I have one of two buttons working…!

background

Now for some sleep…!

If you want to stop in and say hi, I’ll be streaming the rest of development when I get back to it here: http://www.twitch.tv/xekedeath

Completed..! In about 4 hours..!

I started really late… I probably should not have started at all, I have work in 4 hours…

But I have a game enough to play…!

My game has two takes on the theme which I will explain when I can submit the game…

Art suffered a fair amount, but here is a screenshot anyway..!

Monster

Let’s do this…

I have a few game ideas for Beneath The Surface, but they all need a little more thought before a game will come of them…

My first instinct is to go for a water based game, either taking place under the water, or just on top and the major threat is just under the surface…

If I go this path, I want to have a PC that is not a human based character – No diver, no subs – so I would have to go with a fish…
Perhaps this fish is tired of living beneath the surface, and wants to escape, which the player helps with by guiding them through levels, evolving the fish, and getting them out.
Some sort of “Thomas Was Alone” story game, just without the awesome voice over.

My hardest idea is probably more suited to a jam team: A Film Noir point and click murder mystery adventure, where there is something more sinister going on Beneath The Surface.
This would need good writing, good art, and a fair bit of programming to get the game working… I really only have time for one of those things…

Or, some sort of underground exploration game, 2D side scroller perhaps, where the player is looking for something – a cure for a disease, or maybe the source – and it can only be found underground…

We shall see… It is time for a shower to wake up properly, and let the subconscious do its job for a while…

I’ll be using Phaser for this entry, Photoshop for any art, and audacity for sound…

10 hour monster stream over…

And I have quite a lot done on my idea…

Some *massive* bugs as well… But they will either be squashed tomorrow, or ignored while I get the other features I have planned in…

For now, I present to you my WIP: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/79467350/Ludum%20Dare/28/index.html

Arrow keys to move, up to jump, and down to search the items in the background… Avoid the green squares…
Or don’t, it is quite hilarious when you don’t…

So many ideas…

But you only get one…

A couple of my initial ideas were
You only get one: Game – All LD participants make one giant game…!
You only get one: Chance – after that, you are blocked from playing the game… What the game is, I have no idea…

But I think I will go with something a little more expansive, yet achievable…

You only get one EVERYTHING!!!

I will be coding in javascript, using the awesome Phaser framework found here: http://phaser.io/

I will be attempting to stream as well, but as I am in Australia, with a massive 0.7 upload speed that I share with others, the quality may not be good enough to read what I am doing…http://www.twitch.tv/XekeDeath
But there will be music..!

And finished, with plenty of time to spare…!

I’ll write a few notes and design decisions here, in case anyone is interested…

  • My original idea was to have a single button on the screen, that when clicked would tell the player if they won or lost. I wanted to expand this a little, and was considering basing the outcome on where you clicked the button, and having the button appear in different places. This is how the current game design evolved.
  • I began coding this game 6 hours after the timer started counting.
  • My first coding session lasted 11 hours, and I ended up with an almost finished game. Today I fixed a couple of bugs, and added a music track.
  • I was considering a C++ game, using something like SDL, but figured that having the exe file, and any reliant DLL files, and other necessary redistributable files when I could have just a single SWF file would not be minimal.
  • Making the Title screen with all the check boxes took longer than writing the game aspect.
  • I considered adding other options, such as square size, to the 9 that are already there. I decided not to add anything else at the time because of the potential for an online leaderboard, and more options means more ways of sorting, and that gets complex and less minimal.
  • I was considering a particle effect for clicks, but thought it went against the theme. I then considered just having the effects when you successfully click on a square, and the effect could be as simple as an expanding circle that fades out quickly, but again I thought that having anything would just not be minimal enough.
  • I originally planned for 3 different music pieces, but ended up having one loop the whole time instead to keep file size to a minimum.

My submission is here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-26/?action=preview&uid=19338

This was my second attempt at a Ludum Dare challenge, and as last time, I enjoyed the experience.

Finished the bare minimum for this game…

11 hours after starting, I have pretty much finished coding this game up…

Feedback is welcome, but I am off to bed now, and will add sound and maybe some particles or something tomorrow… Or not, as they may not be minimalist enough…

Edit: Remembered a bug with survival + timed hardcore… Don’t try that, you won’t get anywhere…

Guess there are a few more tweaks needed in the morning…

Also, I may need to put an Epilepsy warning, as the game does flash at you, and it does speed up…

My original idea of having a Start button with a random win/lose chance when clicked needed some fleshing out, so I sat around for hours trying to come up with some simple little gameplay element…

And now that I have it, I will begin..!

For simplicity of distribution, I will be using Flixel to produce a swf file…

I have a plan for a potential scoreboard which I would have to host locally…

But for now, I will continue to stick to the Minimal theme and reveal as little as possible about what I am actually up to…

Most of the features I wanted are in there, and I didn’t know about the 1goatuntil a lot was done, so I threw him in the back story… That still counts, right?

First LD game and post: Angry Angus From Outer Space!!!

Been up for almost 24 hours now, with 5 and a half hours left before the submission time of my first Ludum Dare.

Quite happy with my progress on the game inspired by the work experience kid that was at work last week.

I have to implement a few more good guys, and win/loss conditions, and then I’ll be at submission stage..!

The game in it’s current form can be found here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/79467350/AngryAngus.swf

Instructions and a short background story are in the game…

This being my first post, I feel I should include a few extra bits and pieces…

I went with Flixel to make this game, as the whole dev environment was already set up on my work laptop.

I have used sfxr to make some sounds, and have plans to put together a small music track with

musagi, both found here: http://www.drpetter.se/projects.html
