BreakAround PostMortem/Last Chance To Play+Rate Plus More!!

Posted by (twitter: @xanjos)
Monday, January 2nd, 2017 1:26 pm

It’s a bit extremely last minute seeing as there’s only a few hours left until judging ends but I’ve just uploaded the post-mortem for my LD37 entry BreakAround which you can view by heading down to my blog.

In other news, I will be doing a livestream on my Twitch channel at around 9/10pm-ish GMT where I will be (yup, you guessed it) playing and rating some of your Ludum Dare entries. If you would like me to play/rate your game during the stream, you can do so either by filling in my small Google Form or leaving a comment when you play/rate my game so I can check it out (or alternatively just leave a comment here) otherwise when the stream does go live, feel free to send your games in the chat.

Take care folks!

Well as the post title suggests, seeing as tomorrow is New Year’s Eve (which means some of you will probably be off partying somewhere) and there’s only 3 days left until voting ends, this is the last weekend to play and rate my entry BreakAround (For those of you with a Google Cardboard VR headset do give the postjam version I made a go as well).

I still have my little Google Form set up for anyone who would like to play/rate their entries as I’ll most likely be at home during the weekend (otherwise I’ll probably go through them all on Monday) and I might try doing a small rating livestream but to sign off, here’s a few clips of people playing my game.

Have a happy new year peeps! 😀

BreakAround – LD37 Jam Entry

Posted by (twitter: @xanjos)
Monday, December 19th, 2016 5:31 pm

Well I was going to post this earlier (I’ve been busy this past week as well as being mostly lax about judging for some reason) but here’s my jam entry for Ludum Dare 37 (otherwise known as my “comeback” after failing LD36) which I like to describe (in my own personal opinion) as some horrible combination of Breakout with a 1st person 360 view. Desktop and web builds are available (Although for performance reasons the desktop version is recommended) and there’s also a version of the game on Android/Google Cardboard for those that like their VR.

Anyway as usual I’ve put up a little Google Form which you can fill in if you would like me to come and play/rate your entries (I’m going be mostly busy for the next week as I’ll be working on important stuff for my main indie game project but I’ll try to go through each submission as soon as possible).

Analysis of my Ludum Dare 35 results

Hey guys,

I’ve just written a post on my personal development blog analysing the results I received for my LD35 entry SHAPE.SHIFT() earlier this week which you can view by clicking here.

Over 100 Votes For SHAPE.SHIFT()!!

Posted by (twitter: @xanjos)
Monday, May 9th, 2016 7:44 am

Finally managed to achieve just over 100 votes for my entry SHAPE.SHIFT(). Once again, huge thanks to everyone who took the time to play and rate over the past three weeks 😀 .

Anyway, it’s the last day of judging but there’s still time to play/rate my game so if you haven’t tried it yet (Were you living under a rock or something?), you can do so by clicking here (Let’s see if we can get 110 or even 150 votes by the end of the day ;D).

Posting this now rather than tomorrow since most people will have work/school/whatever on Monday but there’s only two days of judging left and if you still haven’t played my entry SHAPE.SHIFT() yet, you can do so by clicking here (I’m literally one vote left away from reaching the 100 mark!!).

Anyway, I’d like to thank all the victims people who went out and actually tried the game and once again, apologies for making such a ridiculously hard game ;D

Footage Of People Playing My LD35 Game (Plus More Shameless Plugins)

Managed to compile a list of all the video footage I could find of people playing/failing/attempting my LD35 entry SHAPE.SHIFT():

Anyway, seeing as the last week of voting, if you still haven’t played my entry yet, you can do so by clicking here (Only about 13 votes left until I’ve reached the 100 mark!!)

Also, you can send me more games to play/rate by clicking here (or leaving a link in the comments) and I’ll get to it as soon as possible.

My Top 5 of Ludum Dare 35 So Far

Posted by (twitter: @xanjos)
Saturday, April 30th, 2016 8:12 pm

Seeing as there’s nearly a week left before the judging period ends, I figure I might as well show you my top 5 (in no particular order) out of the 101 entries I’ve played so far:

Edge Shift – Blackhole

Brain Required

Bot Race

Anyway, since there’s nearly a week left to play/rate game, I’m going to shamelessly plug my entry SHAPE.SHIFT() because why not.

I will still be playing/rating games although on a less regular basis (now that I’ve probably rated more than enough) but if you leave a rating and comment on my entry I’ll be sure to do the same for yours 😉 (Also if you can beat my best score of 280 in the original “balls hard” version of the game let me know as well).

Post-Jam Version Of My LD35 Game Is Up

Posted by (twitter: @xanjos)
Wednesday, April 27th, 2016 4:51 pm

Seeing as a lot of you are having trouble with my LD35 game SHAPE.SHIFT() (because of its supposedly challenging difficulty), I’ve decided to put up a (WebGL build for the time being) slightly easier post-jam version that’s more forgiving in terms of distance between obstacles and the time needed to react to them but should still pose a challenge (Of course for rating purposes/bragging rights, the original “super hard” version is still available on the embed link on the main game page as well as on the itch.io and GameJolt pages).

In other news, my game currently has 59 votes and could probably do with some more:

Anyway, if you have yet to try out my game give it a play/rate by clicking here. You can also check out the post-mortem for the game by clicking here and to see my previous post on how to get a good score in my game (which mostly applies to the original version), click here.

Also, I’m looking for more games to play/rate so click here to submit your entry and I’ll get to it as soon as possible.

I’ve just written up the post-mortem for my LD35 game SHAPE.SHIFT() which you can view by heading straight to my blog.

Tips And Tricks On How To Get A Good Score In My Game

Posted by (twitter: @xanjos)

Right, so a lot of the comments/criticism that my entry SHAPE.SHIFT() has been receiving was geared towards the game’s brutally unforgiving difficulty and whilst pretty much of it is my fault (I didn’t make the holes bigger, I should have increased the gap between obstacles, The player moves too slow etc.), it is still possible to get a pretty good score (A friend of mine managed to get 110 points and someone who rated this got 160) so I figured I might as well write up a quick guide with some tips and tricks on how to get good scores in my game (i.e. not die every time)  .

Top and Bottom Holes

When an obstacle with either a top or bottom hole appears, the best position to be in is to move towards the edge of the screen.

Top Hole

Bottom Hole

Middle Holes

Middle holes are generally more tougher to pass through because of the somewhat pinpoint positioning needed but as a general rule of thumb, the position you’re at when the game starts (i.e. don’t move yet for a few seconds) is the one you most likely want to be in when attempting to pass through middle holes.

Middle Hole

Middle Hole

Moving From Hole To Hole

Once you get the hang of positioning yourself, the next tricky part is learning how to move from hole to hole. Whilst going from top to middle or bottom to middle or middle to top/bottom is relatively easy because of the short distance, going from a top hole to a bottom one (and vice-versa) is pretty tough because of how slow the player moves but the one golden rule I’d like to give out is that as soon as you pass the previous hole, start moving immediately towards the next one (ideally just after you hear that ding sound when you score some points for passing through a hole) although it does require some split second timing (i.e. not too early/late).  When a shape switch is required when going from hole to hole, what I find works best for me is to move straight into position then switch shapes at the last possible minute just before entering the hole.

Anyway here’s a small gameplay clip of me getting 280 points in the game using these techniques (ironically my personal best although what you didn’t see were the number of time I died trying to record a good run).

If you haven’t tried the game yet, you can do so by clicking here (And if any of these tips actually helped you in getting a good score let me know :) )

SHAPE.SHIFT() – LD35 Jam Entry

Here’s my jam entry for Ludum Dare 35 which I can best describe as an endless runner set in cyberspace (and is apparently gaining some notoriety for being well, really hard).

As usual, I also have a Google Form that you can fill in if you would like me to play/rate your entries (I’ll try and do each one as soon as possible).

Ludum Dare 34 Results Analysis

Final Shameless Plugin Post

There’s literally less than an hour left to play/rate entries and my game Rolla Grolla Arena could do with some more votes (it’s probably not possible given the short timeframe but I want to get 100 votes by the end of the judging period).
