Game’s done

snakedog

Was initially going to be an asteroids / snake mashup. First day I built out a complete working asteroids game. Then added in some snake mechanics. Felt a bit directionless.

I became disillusioned, scrapped it and build a game where you choose if a picture is Nicolas Cage or not, with a Tinder style interface. My wife thought it was hilarious, but after sleeping on it I went back to Snakedog.

Stripped all the asteroids mechanics, but left just 2 really slow moving asteroids. Then spent most of the 2nd day just polishing because I was over changing my mind. Turned out pretty good :)

Drag things up into the trees and eat them.

The dangling mechanic feels fun. Not sure where the game is in here yet though.

Any ideas?

One day has passed and we are happy with our progress so far. Our idea is coming together but we still have a few fundamentals to implement to pull it together.

Here is a quick screenshot:

You can also play the current version here.

Press X to pick up and throw objects, try to kill the bear. You can’t actually die yet.

Furever Alone – Post mortem

So now that I’ve slept and finished work (Crazy Australian timezones), I’ll talk a little about my project.

Overall, really happy with how it turned out.
I planned it terribly, so the gameplay coming together as well as it did (well, I like it) was more of an evolutionary fluke as opposed to clever planning. Next time I’ll definitely spend a lot more time in planning… more than walking to the shops and buying food, then starting.

I think I’d also like to explore character and story development more. Surprising doing the little comic / instructions screen was a lot of fun. Had I been more organised or had more time I would definitely like to animate cutscenes in that style.

On the downside, loading it up at work I noticed that some of the fonts didn’t embed, which was a bummer because I don’t have access my server from here to correct and upload the fix. I should just be thankful that it was just a niggly thing like that and not a deal-breaker.

Lots of fun, will definitely be doing it again in another 4 months. I’m hooked!
Time to go play a boat-load of games…

Oh, you can view my entry here:

Would love to here what scores you’re all getting. I just got 133 points. I think there’s potential to get upwards of 300… maybe more.

I'll be back!

All done, Furever Alone!
