A new direction

Yesterday I made amazing progress. The initial idea stood in a few hours, and the mechanic seemed to work. It even looked good!

But then, I hit a wall. Combat with other bacteria cultures did not want to work. I tried many different approaches how to balance growing speed and combat, but none seemed to work. Even a simple “AI” that did absolutely nothing except grow in random directions was unbeatable.

Now, after some good nights sleep, I decided to scrap the initial idea – a bacteria colony RTS – and make a puzzle game out of it. The idea is, that you have to grow your colony towards a goal. Sometimes you will have to active other stuff first. In some levels, you have to eat your way through another colony. Something like this:

mold-oThis has two advantages over the original idea:

  1. No need to code an enemy AI
  2. The game will feel ore self-contained

Let’s hope this works!

Game idea and … progress ?

So the idea is that you have to grow a mold and make it the biggest around. You do not do this directly, but instead guide the growth by prioritizing the growth in strategic regions. Naturally, you have to fight competing molds and other nasty stuff (acids, …).

Growing already works (well, kind of), as seen below:

Next up: Actual gameplay.

Sound and music are still missing, and a few glitches have to be put out, but all in all the game is coming together quite nicely. Have a look:

Two of three layers finished. The puzzle layer is the main game – the other layers will influence the main layer. For example, losing a goal in Pong will shake push a row and make the time rush faster; so you better keep an eye on the ball.

Anyway, I am calling it a night for now. Roadmap for tomorrow:

  • Bugfix some glitches in Pong
  • Add third layer (not yet decided what)
  • Polish
  • Balance
  • Polish
  • Think of a name

99.9% done

Ok, maybe not quite, but I’m still quite satisfied with the progress so far:

Entire Game on One Screen you say? All right, not what I expected, but I can work with that. Here is the plan:

The game starts with a simple classic game, like pong. Very slow pong. Then, after some time another game is pushed on top of pong. Then another. Then another. All games run at the same time, so you have to constantly switch between the layers to keep up with the games.

Sounds good? Good.

Ideas Shmeas

So, “You Only Get One”, huh? Well, I don’t normally do this, but: this theme sucks.

Wait! Here me out: “Break The System”, “Chaos”, “Corruption”, “Creation”, etc. would have been significantly better themes than “You Only Get One” because they are open to so many different interpretations.

Take Break The System: What’s the system? Society? The rail network? A Computer? And break how? By subverting other individuals? Or perhaps literally, with a hammer?

One word themes are even better: Chaos can be used as a narrative device (war, christmas sale, …) and to define the gameplay, but it doesn’t steer you in one direction like “Death is Useful” and “No Violence” does.

As far as “You Only Get One” goes, I can think of only two general interpretations, namely:

  1. Here’s X, but you only get one.
  2. You only get one, if X.

So, dear Darers, I urge you to vote for themes with many possible interpretations next (alternatively: convince me that you only get one is a good theme 😉 )

Anyway, I think I’ll go with the second interpratition, “You only get one, if you do X”:

6 year old you wants to join the cool kids on the block. They all have some item/token to show how cool they are. They tell you that you’ll only get one of those, if you dare to do some challanges like jumping down a cliff, pulling down the pants of the police officer, steal from the supermarket, etc. So the game will be a series of minigames.

That is, unless I can think of something better in the next few hours.
