It isn’t finished but I like what I have

Well, I wasn’t able to finish my game, but I think what I have is a still fun :)

I was able to add spells and 2 more enemies which I think really helped my entry feel like a game and not just an engine for a game.

Since decided to enter the jam version, I had my brother help with the music, and I think he did a pretty good job! If you want to listen to the track he wrote click here. As for features I cut, I really wanted to add traps and more spells. I also wanted to make it so that you found spells in the room in order to add them to your spell list. I think it would have been a good way to add more progression. The level design could have used more work too. The enemies are basically placed randomly in the room and I think trying to create interesting enemy encounters could have been more fun. Anyways, I hope you give it a try!

Today was slower than I would have liked…

but I’m pretty happy with what I have so far still.

Issues and Progress

Well, I ran into some issues this morning with collisions. I’m still not sure what I was doing wrong but I couldn’t get them to work correctly. I ended up just creating a 2D grid for the level and marking the grid with the locations of the objects so that I could detect a collision. This way is actually faster anyways and it works just right! Unfortunately, I wasted like and hour and a half trying to fix the other way before I did this. Oh well.

Here is a GIF of what I have so far:

Here it is:

I’m using GameMaker Studio 2. There are things I really like about it and things that I still hope are improved.

Our Game Idea

When your game is about channeling magic through apps on your “ancient” iPad and fighting robots with a charmander you know you are on to something good!

Menu Music

This is my first time doing the jam version instead of the compo. My brother is helping me with audio, I’m doing mostly programming, and I have a buddy doing art.

My brother already wrote a song for our menu. What do you think?

Feed your pet. Watch it grow and evolve. Battle it. Maybe you can even be the best there ever was… ๐Ÿ˜‰

My game is about exploring randomly generated caves to earn gold:

And then using that gold to buy food and evolve your pet:

Different food combinations will lead to different creatures :)

Android Build for my Game

I’ve been working on a post comp version of my game. Here are some of the things going into it

  • Bug fixes for tutorial
  • Changed mechanic for exceeding the enemy’s defense. You used to take a penalty but now you just can’t do it.
  • Added bonus score points for finding a solution early
  • Added card combos so you are rewarded with more points by finding ways to use more cards.
  • Fixed menu buttons.

I still have a lot I want to improve in this game but it has been an amazing experience so far. Thank you all for the support!

My Compo Entry: Griffin Card!

Play it here.

I went outside my comfort zone a bit with this game. I normally like to create fast paced action games with lots of screenshake. This game is a strategy, turn-based, card game that only has a little bit of screenshake (I couldn’t resist). It was a good experience for me and I’m proud of what I was able to do in under 48 hours.

Here is a gif to tempt you into playing it ๐Ÿ˜‰ Enjoy!

Added a Background!

I’ve added a background and updated the GUI a bit. Now it is on to creating some actual enemy sprites!

Early Gameplay

Nobody can tell what is going on in this game. Here are the basic rules.

  • Your enemies defense grows every turn.
  • You can play up to 3 cards each turn.
  • If you drop a card on the friendly unit it will gain +attack.
  • If you drop a card on the enemy unit it will gain +defense.
  • If your attack is = to your enemy’s defense at the end of the turn you will not take a counter attack.
  • If you go over your enemies defense during your turn you will loop back around with your attack and take a 2 damage penalty.

Does that make sense? I’ve also started adding other cards but it might not be a good idea because the game is already complicated enough to teach haha. Here is a gif.
