Long live the Queen!

My entry is now functionally finished. It’s chess but with modified rules. You only have a Queen and after each turn the enemy will spawn an additional random piece on a random square on the board. For each piece your Queen takes you gain points based on the value of that piece. Once your Queen is taken by an enemy piece, the game is over.

I’m really happy overall with the concept of this game. The rules are incredibly simple, but of course it has all the emergent gameplay and strategy of regular chess. It also ramps up in difficulty very nicely as for each turn in which you don’t manage to take a piece, there’s one extra piece threatening squares on the board, meaning that you slowly run out of options as pieces begin to defend each other.

The next steps are to add some help screens to explain the concept and the way each piece moves for people that don’t know chess already. I’m also going to add Kongregate leaderboard support because score is everything in this game.

I’m in for my My 2nd LD!

My holidays have finally come after working on Decromancer (shameless plug) for the last year without much rest. My weapons of choice:

  • Engine – Unity3D
  • Art – Blender so I can avoid working on something 2D and Photoshop CC for textures, but maybe I won’t even use any
  • Audio – Logic Pro

The final round themes are all pretty interesting, can’t wait to get started! Maybe I’ll try stream myself working hmmm….

Well, I just submitted my entry! Was a really fun jam for me, I think it turned out to be my best 48 hour game yet. It’s really nice to know that other people are staying up late and doing the same as you, and you’re not the only crazy one!

Big thanks to the organisers!

I have a game!

Managed to work out some sort of game around my Kitty simulation. You start with two red kitties and need to raise them until they are old enough to breed. Once they breed some of the kitties will mutate and change colour. Kitties can be sold to the Kitty traders by dragging them on the icons. Different colour kittens are worth different amounts so you need to try and breed the most expensive colour. You have 5 minutes to make as much money as possible.

The mechanics feel decent to me but it also feels a bit too slow and repetitive. I might try and find an extra interaction – possibly the kittens poop everywhere and you have to clean it up or they’ll get sick! Maybe the game could also do with some milestones so you feel like you are making more progress. Not really sure, there’s something not quite there yet…

You can try the current build here. Let me know what you think!

Simulation complete – time to gamify!

I’m pretty much done on the simulation part of my game idea. A few glitches here and there but it’s time to move onto making this into a game.

There’s a┬ávideo here

My first LD!

Hi all. This is my first LD! I’m going to be using Unity and Photoshop. I’ll be also be using these frameworks:

  • ex2D for sprite animations
  • iTween
  • Some home-brewed libraries for GUI, Audio and other stuff.

Was kind of hoping for chain reaction, but I guess the whole point of LD is to think on your feet. After seeing 1000 kittens I just couldn’t help but base my game on kittens as it also kind of fits the theme of ‘Evolution’ (evolution tends to work over a large number of independent entities).

So I’ve done my first asset, a little animation of a kitty running – I plan to tint it so I can have all the kitties in the rainbow!

Next up, some sort of kitty breeding simulation to make evolution possible.
