I’m in for a challenge!

Having participated 2 LDs so far, I decided to give it another shot. So… I’m in for this weekend’s LD compo! This time, however, I’m going to give myself a little bit of challenge. Instead of my usual java setup, I’m going to try to work with C++(or maybe C, depending on game complexity) and SDL.

Here’s my toolset for this weekend:

Language: C/C++
Engine: SDL2
Sounds: sfxr, Audacity
Music: autotracker + free samples available to everyone
Graphics: GIMP, Inkscape, SynTex (https://github.com/mxgmn/SynTex)

Despite working on a Linux box, I’ll be able to cross-compile for windows systems, too! I’ve got a really neat setup for doing this on my archlinux system using MinGW toolchain.

10 sec defense Post-Mortem

Here I am writing my first post-mortem! I hope I’m doing it  right 😉

>> Little story on my brainstorming:

So this will be about my game called ’10 second defense’ which I created for LD27 in 48hrs. I should probably start with where I got the idea so here we go: It was 6AM for me, I woke up earlier so I could check out what the theme was and start programming. I don’t feel comfortable programming at night, so I rather went to sleep earlier the day before. Then I woke up and checked out what the theme was. Once I found out it’s 10 seconds, I was really excited and glad it was that. You can basically take any famous game concept and re-work it to fit this theme. My first idea was to create a platformer where each level would take 10 seconds. That wouldn’t however be very good, since I’m not good with collision and tiled maps. Then, I realized I have some experience with defense games. I once wrote a very very simple tower defense game. But tower defense game is too long for 10 seconds. So I had to think a lot to came up with base concept for 10 second defense. Once then, I started writing the code.

>> What went good: Gameplay is pretty rich, sounds got implemented very fast, shop is working, game can be played infinitely, I had enough sleep that weekend 😉

>>What went wrong:
It took me some time to come up with the idea, I came up with lots of new ideas… during coding, so it was pretty much madness(you’d know what I’m talking about if you watched the stream http://twitch.tv/tomsik68), GRAPHICS(that seems to be the only thing people hate about this game)

If you’re now interested in looking at the game, you can feel free to

Day 1 Check-in

So today I woke up earlier(6AM) so I could program as soon as possible. When I found out the theme is 10 seconds, I was very excited. But then, I realized how hard it is to come up with an idea. I admit I had few ideas on other themes, but I had absolutely no idea what to do for 10 seconds. So I’ve been thinking for an hour and I came up with an idea involving some sort of tower defense clone and something with 10 seconds. The idea morphed and right now I made a big progress. I can safely say my game will be finished just in time.

See the screenshot:

This is a tower defense game, where you play in role of wizard who wants to protect his little fortress. I’ll probably change fortress into something else.

Anyways, I’m live-streaming the development so if you’ve got nothing else to do, you can come to take a look: http://www.twitch.tv/tomsik68/

All this game needs is more content, better sprites and some sounds!

Ludum dare warmup thing is really useful and I found out I should use different tools as I posted before, so here’s my updated equipment post for LD27:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Library: LWJGL + Slick2D

Graphics: Pinta + GIMP + Inkscape

Tiled maps: Tiled (http://mapeditor.org)

Sound: sfxr, autotracker-bu, Linux Multimedia Studio

Environment: Xubuntu 12.04 :)

Hello everybody! Last time I participated and had really much fun creating game Life of Worm, which you should be able to google or find on Ludum Dare page. Also, I’ve got some positive feedback, so I’ll try to participate another time and we’ll see ;). However, I don’t know how about my exams, so it’s possible I’ll not be able to take part :/ Anyways, this is what I use to create games:

I hope the theme is going to be something what is easy to create a game for…

Good luck to everyone! 😉

Progress update – day 2

I’ve been working hardly on new features. Only few things are now missing to game. Still, I have 16 hours to go, so I’ll use them fully! Again, I’m posting a working demo of the game: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/29628587/LifeOfWorm_dev.jar . The demo is just a single JAR file, only requires java 6+. This time, I’ll also post a screenshot!

Any feedback is appreciated! :)

I’ve decided to create a game, where you start as a worm, collect food, coins, lives and most importantly DNA, which can be used to evolve to fish, then crocodile and then monkey. I’ve finished most of art, level loader & worm.

Working demo(requires java 6+, needs download): https://dl.dropbox.com/u/29628587/LifeOfWorm_dev.jar

I’ve wanted to take part in previous Ludum Dare, but I couldn’t do so because of lack of time. However, we’ve got holidays now, so I’ll sure find time for this one. I hope theme will be good(as probably all of us :) ).

This is my equipment:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Engine: Slick2D(http://slick.cokeandcode.com/) or my personal SGE(https://github.com/tomsik68/Simple-Game-Engine) written in pure java. Depends on game I’ll want to make.

Graphics: Paint.NET, GIMP, Inkscape

Sound(if there’ll be any):  sfxr
