Getting some shape

First day is over and the game is getting some shape finally. It was a tough day but I’ve had very slow tempo today so I will need to hurry up tomorrow. I am really excited about this game but it’s time to sleep now, only 24 hours left.

Here he comes!

Just finished walking animation of player’s character in Life of a Geek simulator.

Also I’ve done basic game mechanics such as movement, collisions and essential object interaction but there is still sooo much to do. I haven’t started working on environment yet so, let’s just implement this animation and then hoooray to paint some pixels!

Edit: You need to click the gif to play… Does anyone know why it isn’t playing automatically?

The idea was born

When I heard the theme I wasn’t very optimistic. I can imagine whole level on one screen, but whole game? Finally I managed to come up with a few ideas, more or less fitting the theme. One of them was Tamagotchi. Why not? It’s a game on one screen. I was thinking about how to make it fun to play and then I’ve got a new idea. Why not to create a Sims like game?! You can have whole flat on one screen and still plenty things to do so I believe it will be great use of theme. And this is how my game idea was born – Life of a geek simulator.

My plan is:

  • Think about some over-hyped game features firstly (I’ve already got some crazy ideas)
  • Try some basic mechanics in stencyl as I am not a programmer and can’t say I’ve got many experiences with the engine itself
  • Start to work on graphics (which I will need a lot of, even though everything will be on one screen)

In next update I will show you some in-game graphics hopefully. I’m going for pixel art.

Greetings Ludum Dare!

I’ve created this wallpaper for you guys but honestly I hope I won’t need to draw any more snowmans during the jam 😀 And yes, I am in for the second time. My last LD was #23, so it’s been a while, but I am really excited this time and I am looking forward to it. The compo begins in less than 5 hours and I’ve had a lot of work this week so I guess it’s time to go sleep now.

I’ll be using:

» Stencyl as the game engine
» Photoshop for graphics
» GarageBand on iPad for music
» BFXR and Audacity for sounds

See you tomorrow!

The time is RUNNING

More than four hours of working and everything I have is this running animation… Luckily other animations will be much easier, but I really have to hurry and begin to program the essentials.

I am in… hopefully

I’m really in hurry those days so I didn’t even have a time to look at the themes yet but hopefully I will join this Ludum Dare. This will be my second LD. My first was #23 and from that point I have either didn’t manage my time to participate or I gave up on the beginning, partly because of my programming skills. But now I will be using Stencyl, so I will be able to concern more about the game mechanics, level design and graphics.

Honestly, I really hate this theme because it is unspecific and also little bit restrictive. But I think I’ve got pretty nice idea. In my game the player will take role of special agent, whose job is to break through secret facility and reveal its secrets. At the beginning of each level, the player has to choose one ability for his character. The player won’t be able to finish level with only this ability thought, so he will has to repeat the level with another. The changes made with the previous character will stay.

First of all I am going to try some character animations because I am afraid that it will be the hardest part. I will need plenty of animations. I made the character in Illustrator, so I can easily manipulate with it and then I will export it to photoshop frame by frame.

My October Challenge

This October Challenge will be my first, and if everything runs okay, it will be my actual startup.

My plan:

  1. Publish my portfolio page that I finished recently
  2. Finish, polish and publish not just one but TWO of my nearly finished games

And which games I want to finish?

  • Chemistry Lab – my first almost finished game. The player has to collect a certain elements and avoid others. It’s quite simple, but very catching and fun.
  • Little Farmer – I started working on this game mainly in order to repeat all the useful features and learn ActionScript 3 properly (I worked in ActionScript 2 long time ago). On the occasion of my sister’s birthday, I decided to expand it, put it into farming environment and dedicate it to her at last. I admit that this game isn’t very fun yet, but I’ve learned soo much with it.

Shake it up!

Finally I finished the game and I am quite satisfied with it. Unfortunately it has two levels only :/ . I too much dealt with the details and I didn´t managed to do more levels. Second level I started doing about three hours before the end of the Compo and finished it just one hour before, so I wouldn’t be able to do more. Never mind. I hope that the difficulty will take care of it. And I’m really proud of the shocks effects 😀

… next time I’ll maybe join the Jam with my friend and I’ll concentrate just on graphics.

Plan C

So, first day is over and it was really interesting. Initially I wanted to do a little microorganism simulator but I overestimated my programming ability (thank goodness for that) and had to come up with something new. I spent several hours just during programming random motion. And it was even the easier part.

Second idea I get was space adventures, which goal was terraforming asteroid to tiny planet, but I had no idea what would the player did there.

Finally, my third idea was to create maze on circuit board which the ant had to go through without touching the electrical conductor. And I think it is pretty good. Programming is quite simple, so I can focus more on graphical aspects. For half a day I have programmed the base engine and created most of the graphics.

First time I’m in!

My name is Tomas and I’m from Slovakia. I am interested in computer graphics and level design mainly. I don’t know much about programming, so I’m counting especially on good idea and visual processing. Also I’ll probably try to make something to this Warmup Weekend… I have to remember the basics. I’ll be using:

» Programming: ActionScript3 with no external libraries

» Graphics: Photoshop

» Sounds: don’t know yet, probably Sfxr, Audacity, maybe FL Studio (depends on time)

» Timepalse: Chronolapse

In addition I upgraded LD logo for this event, so who want may use it in their game.
