Idea came quickly

It felt weird to have an idea only one hour after waking up and reading the theme. But our game may actually be fun with lots of features and probably a lot of time for polish!

Nina did some sketches for some enemies and gameplay elements.

sketchingAwayProgramming is coming along nicely too!

Hope everyone is having fun!

Third In

We (Nina+Tim) are in for the third time! It’s actually my 9th time in the LD but after 6 submissions in the compo category it’s the third time that we create a game together.
Working together was much better the second time during LD 30 when we created Hit and slide than the first time.

Hit And Slide, our second game

We will most likely use libgdx + artemis-odb for the programming part and illustrator for graphics and Spine for animations.
We wish you all a lot of fun!

Rocket Science, our first game together

Ponball? Sure!

I finished my MiniLD entry Ponball. As usual there’s a lot of room for improvements but playing with my girlfriend showed that it can actually be a lot of fun. There’s also an AI opponent if you don’t have someone else to play with.

I wish I had the time to use a different camera perspective because everything looks way cooler if not watched from a top-down perspective. But – well – whatever – that’s the way it is.

Check out the game RIGHT HERE and let me know what you think!

Or watch the video (but I can guarantee that playing is much more fun, especially with a second player ;))

Ponball – The last days

Sounds like an interesting movie-title!

I have all of tomorrow to finish Ponball. I finally decided on the main game-mechanics and improved the visuals (at least I think I did :)) to procrastinate the coding work …

Will post once I am done tomorrow.

Pong pong pong pong pong!

Still working on Ponball

I only have limited time this week but am still trying to improve Ponball.

Click me, I am a GIF

I added more pinball-like elements and spent a lot of time to get those ramps to work. Physics and stuff …

We’ll see where it goes from here, but there’s still another weekend coming that I could use to play around with it further.

It’s awesome to see how different all your pong-ideas are :)

Ponball Update#2

Posted by (twitter: @timtipgames)
Saturday, March 21st, 2015 11:03 am

I wrote another post yesterday about Ponball here.

I always wanted to create a classic pinball game, so the theme is the perfect excuse to do so and to give it a little twist 😉

I uploaded a dev build and linked it on my entry page . Feel free to check it out :)

Right now there are two field-elements. One is the classic pinball-bumper and the other is a ramp that leads to a “tower” that holds the ball for a few seconds before it shoots it out in a random direction at high speed. The gif below has way to many balls in action, managing two or three of them is pretty challenging. The gif below was recorded while two AI players played against each other. I haven’t implemented scores yet, but I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to beat the AI right now.

Unity 5 is pretty awesome for quick prototyping. I only made one game with Unity for another MiniLD (check it out here) and I am very happy about the improvements Unity and I made since then. Getting the physics right is very difficult, but in my experience that is always the case when dealing with physic engines. Also my 3D modelling skills in Blender are not really existent but it’s fun doing stuff in 3D.

I will work more on this tomorrow and will add scores as well as more gameplay-elements (multiball!). Hope you are having a good time!

One Day Later

Ponball 3 Hours in

I got an idea that revolves around the name “Ponball” and will be a physics-based 2-player pinball-like pong game. Thus: Ponball. Right now I visualize something like Pong with a lot of typical Pinball elements in between the players paddles and multiple balls.

I made some progress in the first three hours with the physics-based main Pong mechanic.

With my current idea it may be difficult to make sure that the balls don’t come to rest due to a lack of force impulse, so I am playing around with gravity fields that split the field into two areas, pushing the ball towards the players paddles. As you can see I am not quiet there yet, and I may scrap this approach after all (top paddle is stretched for testing purposes):

PonballI am pretty happy that I had an idea pretty quickly and am looking forward to tomorrow when I will continue to work on Ponball.

I hope you are having a good time too!

I will stream while playing your games today. Here’s a countdown as a timezone independent way to tell you when I’ll begin (maybe a few minutes earlier or later):

I basically only ever stream to rate LD games. I did it for the past three LDs and had a blast!

I will play games of people who are in the chat with higher priority and will do the ratings off screen.

So add you game to the queue right here! I hope to see you very soon in my twitch channel!

Multiplayer, Snowfights and You

We worked pretty hard today after a short night and made some progress!

Nina finished most of the graphics and animations that we need and I got all the physics more or less done. There are some things that are still a little rough around the edges but I think we can live with that as it is actually a working online multiplayer game with semi-synchronized physics and a semi-authorative server. I guess we may actually end up with a max of 8 players per game. Not because of the networking but because the whole game is on a single screen, so it will get pretty crowded quickly. The networking logic allows for random drop-in drop-out though, so I hope we will get some people to play together even though multiplayer games have a hard time during LD rating periods.

The game is a snow-fighting game with mining elements. You basically have to dig down to get snow and other utilities to help you in the snowfight. The whole game is on one screen meaning there is only a limited number of cubes to mine so they will respawn after a while.

Tomorrow we will create some more extras (the mandatory pick-axe that makes you mine faster) as well as some auto-triggering bomb-tiles, create a GUI and communicate game progress better. Eventually we will also have to settle for a name… Snow Wars? Winter Wars? Maybe something without the word Battle or War in it 😉

We are looking forward to playing this with you guys.

Congratulations to all people who are about to submit to the competition – you guys rock!

Day 1 Progress

At the end of day one we have a working (but pretty bugged) Online-Multiplayer-Snowfight-Mininggame-Extravaganza!

We made a huge step today but there’s still sooo much more to do. Hope you are all doing fine and enjoy your time!

We’re in!

This will be my seventh LD but will go for the jam with my significant other Nina for the second time.

I’ll do the programming using artemis-odb and libgdx while Nina is going to create the graphics. Maybe we’ll make use of Spine for animations this time. I’d love to finaly make  a multiplayer game for a LD but we’ll see what the theme will be.

We are hoping for

Wish you all a lot of fun!

Ain’t no day like day one

Finally an idea. This is what we have right now:

We are going to create a game about aliens whose home planet is about to be destroyed and who need to be transferred to a new place in order to be rescued. But there’s no alien race like another. Dying of air-loss because of accidentally (!!!) breathing in another passenger isn’t that  unusual.

There’s aliens who like eating other aliens and there’s aliens who like farting all around. There’s sensitive noses and nervous stomachs everywhere. In order to provide a safe passage it’s your responsibility, captain, to take care of every passengers need during the transfer between two connected worlds. However, we are out for today and hope you all have a good time. Nina & Tim (Bremen, Germany)

Again in for the first time

We will do it!

It’s my sixth LD but for the first time I will join the jam instead of the compo for the best possible reason: I am not alone! My girlfriend will take care of graphics(illustrator)+and animations(spine) and we may end up doing the music together (reaper+audacity+our voices). We will hold on to the compo rules and won’t use preexisting assets.

I’ll use libgdx and artemis (odb) on my end.

We wish everyone good luck and a lot of fun :-)

Playing your LD games on stream soon

Posted by (twitter: @timtipgames)

I will start streaming 1 hour and 30 minutes after I have posted this. That will be around 10:00 GMT, and in the middle of the night in US timezones 😉 Here is a timezone conversion table.

I rarely stream but I did it to play LD games during the rating period of the past two LDs and while it was much more exhausting than I expected I had a lot of fun doing it.

I will play games of people who are in the chat with higher priority and will do the ratings off screen.

So add you game to the queue right here! I hope to see you very soon in my twitch channel!

A Good Night Reminder

Make a backup of all your game files NOW. Don’t do it later!

It’s a few seconds spent if nothing fails. It’s the difference between a game made and a dream shattered when it happens.

2D Animations

Posted by (twitter: @timtipgames)
Saturday, April 26th, 2014 2:52 pm

I have a very simple gameplay mechanic impelemented but spent most day creating free-form-deformations in Spine and getting the runtime to work.

But … I really like the result and some of the animations that I created today may be the most animated animations I have ever created in 2D :)

Now it’s time for sleep.

Wish you much fun!spine3

Edit: I would like to thank “Tomski” for helping me with the spine-libgdx runtime bugs although he was busy creating his own game :)
