Status Update – Bathroom Break Manager / Game Of Throne

EDIT: In which I start three consecutive paragraphs with the word “so.”

So, thanks to being on the West Coast I got a very civilized 6pm start on Friday. Much better than my previous jams starting at some unholy hour on GMT in London. Came up with a few ideas, finally settled on the silliest and hopefully easiest to implement. Spent most of the evening and night getting some basic game play down.

So, the idea is that you are running an office which only has ONE (BATH) ROOM, and a collection of feckless employees with tiny bladders and a propensity to take on liquids constantly. It’s up to you to manage the ensuing line for the bathroom and prevent too many “puddles.”

So far, I have an office block with employees in their offices. Over time they will fill their bladders and you can send them to the bathroom to relieve themselves. The main bit of game play I would like to add is a proper queue – at the moment they will all rush in together which rather takes away from the supposed issue of only having one bathroom. If I can get that down, I’ll move on to some “better” artwork and maybe some sound effects. The opportunity to record toilet-based audio is too much to pass up on. Am I 5 again? Let’s find out.

I’m in! – I actually booked the Monday off this time, so can get a proper lie-in after the compo. This will be my third time entering. Planning to use:

Well, that will be quite enough for now…

Just made some final edits to my submission, and I really must be off to bed (it’s 2.41am here.)

I can’t say I’m very enthusiastic about my game, but I’m happy to have completed something in the 48hours. It’s a platformer, and it’s got cats. Well, grey boxes. CATS.

Second and likely last update before submission

Well, since my last update, I’ve managed to work out what the actual challenge is to the game, and got together one small level using that. More importantly I’ve decided on what it’s called, and have now got *some* time to spend on appearances :p.

So (don’t) hold your breath for…..

A much delayed progress update.

On the final stretch now, just had a chance to step back and look at what I’m actually doing. So far the process has been roughly:

* Stay up for theme announcement (2am)

* Grumpily think about ideas

* Get some sleep

* Continue to be unhappy with every idea I’ve had so far.

At this point I decided I can either go for some clever interpretation of the theme, or something more dumb-fun. Given the lack of inspiration, I plumped for the latter. So, I quickly made several decisions:

1. It would be a platformer.

2. The main mechanic is throwing cats around.

With this solid, and well thought-out plan, I spent the first day building a platformer where you throw cats (fluffy grey boxes), with enemies who will chase you unless distracted by fluffy grey boxes. I had a reasonable amount of time to play with the mechanic itself, and I’m happy with how it’s working. However, not entirely sure what the larger gameplay looks like – there’s currently no real challenge to avoiding the enemies.

So the plan now is to spend a good chunk of time boiling down some level design with mechanics tweaking to try and find how this might actually be fun. Hopefully that will leave some small portion of time for some polish! HAH.

I’m in for the compo.

Finally accepted the inevitable, this will be my first attempt at producing something with unity3d instead of getting bogged down in engine choices. I will probably be using sfxr and sunvox if I get the time for audio, as well as GIMP/inkscape.

My Submission

Well, despite feeling like I was on top of things, I ended up just submitting on time. It was a lot of fun, and I’m glad I did it. My game is about controlling trade routes between civilisations and is designed to be about quick thinking, rather than long thoughtful contemplation.

Hey, just throwing my hat into the enormous internet sized ring. This will be my first Ludum Dare!

I will be using play-clj, a clojure library I’ve been playing around with for a little while, as well as the GIMP and Inkscape, or possibly paint.net. If I get to the stage of needing sound effects, I’ll most likely be using sfxr. I’ll be coding in trusty old vim.

Really looking forward to it, but also oddly nervous now.

Looking forward to seeing what you all make!
