Make Me Beautiful

The basic mechanics are taking shape. The world creator can place water, trees, mountains and clouds. Next task is to make better art… No, that will be to take a shower then art!

The first world element can be placed on the globe.

Sorry if your eyes hurt, the sprites are developers art. I want to get the mechanics to work first. Next is the placement of water and trees. Hopefully I will be able to start with drawing better art later today too.

Have a great day and the best of luck with Ludum Dare!

Recap day 1

A late recap of my first day 1. After the Ludum Dare 33 I set the goal of making a platform game that is must better then the ld33 entry (if you want to learn from a bad game, then you must play it here and take notice of what sucks). Between LD33 and this LD I wrote a framework within Unity for making platform really fast. This framework comes with a core that is tested via unit tests. If I brake something in those core classes, then those unit tests fail. If they fail I should not release a build. That should be obvious. The core functionality comes with the basics of a 2d game. I can write a book about it, so I want go into details here.
But in which ways is my current work better then LD33? Well, the framework saved my a lot of time spending on writing code. Instead I could work on assets or think about the game-flow during the day. Even better, I had time to take a walk without a big todo-list of unfinished code waiting for me.

So, what did I make? A little game about my little princess in angel-form. inspired by Kid Icarus (we really need a good Kid Icarus game!). The mouse position will make her walk left or right. She jumps if you hit the right mouse button.

The core game-loop is working. Now I need to focus on the growing theme. I did had a plan for it yesterday, but I am not going to stick with it. I will let this little angel grow in power somehow.

But there was something else yesterday. I went to the Dutch meetup of Ludum Dare at @gamestad. It was really nice to meet Dick Poelen and Ruben again. Also met new lovely people! Too luck too all of you.

Thank you for reading and have a great day!

Learned from the last time, now all tools are ready.

– Gimp
– Unity
– Framework within Unity (it even has a code generator!)

On Saturday I am going to Gamestad in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Hopefully @dickpoelen (Lady Bug, Wormhunter) will join the fun later that day too. If you want to be in the company of other Ludum Dare participants let Gamestad know.

Have fun everyone and lets make some great games this weekend!

I know, it is just a platform game with reused assets and code for now. For me, this game jam is a great excuse to tackle a few bugs and refactor old code while listening to OST of classic games.

Have a lovely day!

It was a mad man’s day!

Now I can (re)make assets and a level to play.

Have a great day!

It was a productive day yesterday. Maybe it was because I had a much of inspiration for this jam. I am glad I did not go with my first idea of teleporting, since uheartbeast is doing great with that idea! Or a typewriter weapon, I seen people working on that idea on Twitter.

What I did do was to go with an old idea but with a twits. I am going to keep this idea to myself for now:-) I do want to share this developers art screenshot of the current state.

My todo list for today is:

– finish the gameplay
– redo art
– round up and post the entry
– check twitter for #LDJAM
– enjoy the day

I hope you all going to have a great and productive day! Keep up the good work.

This was a great Ludum Dare for us, specially for Dick because it was his first one. We gotten so many positive comments, we started to work on a better version of Wormhunter for all who left such comment.

Keyboard Controls:
Move: arrow keys / WASD
Attack: E
Dodge: Q
Throw beacon: 1, 2 or 3

Controller Controls:
Move: Left thumbstick
Dodge: Left bumper/trigger
Attack: Right bumper/trigger
Throw beacon: Action buttons, except the top one.

You need to stand still to throw a beacon.
For co-op you will need a controller and single player can also be played with a controller.
In co-op when a player is eaten by a worm, the other player can save the eaten one. Just kill the worm.

We really like to have your feedback. If you want to give feedback, you can leave it as a comment on this page or via Twitter: @dickpoelen or @smallgaming
