Online Betting – A Seven.Eat.Nine. Post-Mortem

Posted by (twitter: @thatwhichism)

Nowadays the entire world heralds at the simple click of a button. cricket Betting has been moving forward to the virtual world in rises and limits.

What went right:

Made game in JavaScript with no preexisting external libraries in a weekend, of which am “meh”-level proud because am not good at JavaScript.

What went wrong:

Should’ve done more online cricket betting; is turning out to be incredible well-liked these days. With online betting “you get the same enjoyment and enthusiasm as you get at a land based cricket.”

The future of online betting:

Will probably finish game at some point. And by finish, I mean add sound, leaderboard, maybe some like, settings? And then eternal happiness will be mine.

“Obviously, there is a separate line in-between these games into games of luck and games of skill. Both have numerous members, though if you excavate in a slight deeper you will observe that games of skill have more fame and comprise better superiority of participants.” -A. Wiseperson

oh g-d i might be making a thing for this thing again

A. Hole Ducks (48-Hour Compo)- FAQ and Post-Mortem

I get some questions regarding A. Hole Ducks.

Q. Some people say to me, “thatwhichis,” (this is the name I use sometime on the Internet); they say, “thatwhichis, why are [the ducks] not in a pond?”

A. What?

Phew! That first one was a tough one. I like to take those on first.

Second question!

Q. Another people says to me, “ThatWhichIs[Editor’s note: the capitalization is optional], how come you such great games make?!1”

A. Thanks for playing, kids! Hopefully this game has helped to make you forget about your inside-scars for a while!

Post-Mortem

What went right: made a game about ducks, at least some of whom are total A. Hats.

What went wrong: not enough Old Ones or Young Ones.  Missed opportunity!

A. Hole Ducks

This is a game about ducks.  About feeding ducks.

Sometimes when feeding ducks you might say, “Hey, duck!  You had yours!  Let another duck have one!” but the duck doesn’t listen.  The duck is ignoring the limited amount of food you have to give and the one food to duck policy.

Some of you might say this game is a biting commentary of economic system.  You would be wrong.  Just ducks.

I think this link will take you there: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=23194

The arrow is pointing at a duck.

one life: a… post-mortem? sure!

I am learning things!  In this, my first Ludum Dare!  (Take a drink?)

This probably won’t be a proper postmortem.  I’ve never written one, but I do think quite a bit about things I’ve done, so here.  we.  are.

Things that went wrong-ish: should have allowed more time to properly flesh out the concept.  As I mention on the game page, I was indisposed for a large portion of this weekend, but… I figured, if I had something built that I was relatively proud of by the time the 48-hour period ended, I might as well submit; no?  Maybe you, my audience, would have been better served by a spill over into the jam, but what are jams for if not to challenge oneself and expand experiential boundaries?

I used Construct 2, which I’d never used before other than to assemble a sample game from a tutorial earlier last week, and found it to be more helpful than restrictive.  I almost certainly would not have been able to get things up and running so quickly without it, but also ran into some relatively severe limits to either the product itself or my knowledge of the product (most likely the latter).  What should have been seemingly simple sprite collisions were totally all like, “wait, what brosef?”

So back to time as a factor: I furiously pounded URLs into fields screaming, “SUBMIT, YOU MONSTER!” as the clock for preparation time counted down to zero.  Then I realized a timer for submission had an hour left on it and cackled as would a maniac.

Spoilers?  There might be spoilers coming up here.  Actually, I think I’m about to spoil what didn’t make it into the game, but that might spoil a little bit of what did, so you decide if you want to keep reading before playing!
