Postmortem and happy new year! :)

Sunday, December 29th, 2013 3:45 pm

How it went?

Well, plan was to finish something playable on first day, and polish in on the next.
We got something playable in the end of the second day, as a result, met on the evening of monday and worked since 6pm till 5:30am to turn it into its current state.

The good

  • We used google doc to collect all ideas on first run(no discussing ideas, just writing them) and then going over discussing them, works pretty well to see where team wants to go
  • We picked theme simple enough considering we did not work that much together before
  • We had loads of fun
  • Catโ€™s are fun to play with(our host had a playful cat)
  • It was good working at one place – It was easy for the team to brainstorm and talk about progress and issues

The bad

  • We failed to finish something playable on first day
  • We did not test programmers teamwork on warmup, turned out there were issues with some parts of our project causing git conflicts -_-
  • On first day we kinda failed to divide work well, as a result some people were not working 100%
  • Also programmers were waiting for designers to make some first graphics to be used in game, while instead should have used whatever as placeholders and start cracking
  • Only one programmer from the team was familiar with tool used, so without him it was hard to progress initially
  • Playful cats are distracting :)
  • If somebody from the team gets distracted when working at one place, itโ€™s easy for others to get distracted too

What to do differently next time

  • Be more familiar with tools to be used
  • Try to divide team members work types beforehand better
  • Finish something playable on first day
  • Donโ€™t wait for graphics from designers, use placeholders

And Happy New Year!

TimeLapse and how our game idea evolved

Wednesday, December 25th, 2013 9:31 am

Here is one of our programmers timelapse.

And our designer timelapses

Plus a little retrospect on how things went(Postmortem comes little bit later)
On day one, we gathered up on Saturday and spend first I think 4 hours writing ideas in to a Google Doc, and then going over them discussing.
We had plenty of funny ideas on a level of a story. But none were exactly that good in terms of game play idea.

We decided, why not to use all of them and make a quest game :) And so we did. Or at least started.

Idea was that you have only one day of life left, and at the end of it you die and go to hell or haven(or may be even other options).
Idea was to have linear quests, aka go there fetch that, with characters and other interactive items and some funny stories that effect where you end up in the end.

Then second day of compo came. By that time it was clear we are behind the scheduled so we did first pivot.
We decided that we will have kinda 4 story lines and which you play is random. First random element was on who you are. If you are atheist, satanist or some other not exactly haven material guy you actually want to go to hell(to hang around with atheists and other cool people). Or you do want to go to haven(such a cliche these days :D).
Anyways, second random element is which quest we give you, which determines if you win or loose. Soo, you may want to go to haven, you get a quest to help a child, but trough quest end up ruining his childhood and go to hell in the end :)

Then 3rd day came. We have day jobs so we gathered at 6pm to finis it up. And we worked till 5:30am considering some had a job to go to at 9am -_-
By now we decided to do another pivot. It would not change much, just make more use of content we had. Ida was to use Giant Turnip fairy tail as example

Basically ideas is that instead of “go there fetch that” all characters run with you. It saves time and leads to some funny combinations. All we needed was to add reactions of characters and achievements based combinations you got.
And we do have some such achievements there, like stopped zombie apocalypse, ruined childhood or stolen Christmas :)

That’s I think it, we would be thankful if you went and rated our game ๐Ÿ˜‰ And may be have idea how to improve it too?

Cuz its time to show something ๐Ÿ˜€

Saturday, December 14th, 2013 4:53 am

So, we went with it in rounds style

Round one
We created a google doc and started collaboratively adding ideas there, no censorship, no “but’s” yet and so on, just putting everything that comes to our mind

Round two

Going trough the list discussing and sorting theme now

Round three

Picking one of those that did not got filtered.

And here is the google doc we used https://docs.google.com/document/d/159N4dWO_iHZ7vXOEJGyMJmhEFfgvpNmFe5P2iIcMdAw/edit?usp=sharing
May be you will find some fun in it ๐Ÿ˜€

We are In!

Saturday, December 7th, 2013 8:25 am

Who we are

We are team of ~4 people from Latvia and to our knowledge its first team/jam/ludumdare run from Latvia.

Core of the team are guys from http://mightyfingers.com/ startup who are building their HTML5 game framework!

Some of us have participated in LD since 2008, some didn’t participate yet but we all have some game dev experience.

What we will use
We definitely will use HTML5 MigthyEngine for programming/game dev.

Photoshop for graphics.

Autotracker/SFXR for sounds.

Today we did a warmup session building simple breakanoid and we did test timelapse too :)
