End of Day 1

Posted by

Today has flown by and although I feel like I’ve achieved a lot, I’m going to be busy tomorrow. Going to call it a night and get started early as my brain is lowing down considerably.

The game now starts in the water and moves to land and then sky with each level having three phases that introduce new enemies. After each phase you can improve your speed or defense to help out in future levels. Below is showing the land phase with the three land enemies, “Planta”, “Speeda” and “Stompa”.

I’m a terrible artist so I decided to just go with the flow and create whatever came into my head and although I’m probably the only one, I quite like the way they’ve turned out. Derpy doesn’t even come close to describing them.

Really enjoyed looking at the other posts and the #LDJAM twitter feed during my breaks, some great games out there.

Making Progress

So my game is using both themes. The game is similar to the bacteria phase of Spore where you have to eat the smaller enemies and avoid the larger ones.

You are growing by feeding on the other animals and you control your character by using the left and right arrows to turn.

Not the most advanced game but I’m hopefully going to be able to add more polish than previous LD games.

I’m In

Looking forward to this, got no plans or distractions all weekend and Monday off work so I can work up to the deadline without worrying about sleep. I’m going to be using the following

  • Language: Java with the LibGDX framework
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Art: Paint.NET, Gimp, Inkscape
  • Sound/Music: BFXR, OpenMPT, Guitar with Rocksmith Cable

Hoping for a good theme but I’m going to sketch out an idea for all the final ones to make sure I have something.

This is my 4th Ludum Dare and I’ll be using the following tools.

Language: Java with LibGDX

Audio: sfxr/bfxr

Graphics: Paint.NET & GIMP

Looking forward to theme reveal. Good luck everyone.

Current Status

So I’m done coding for today and I’m reasonably happy where I am. Tomorrow I need to fine tune some controls and AI, create more levels for the game, finish the HUD, finish all the game screens and if there is time after that I aim to make things look better.

Progress Update

So everything has been going smoothly so far.

Since everyone loves underwater levels in games I decided to do a game which is all underwater levels. The player is a salvage diver and the goal will be to get to the end of the level and collect the chest while avoiding sharks, swordfish, blowfish, mines, electric eels, sharp rocks or whatever I can come up with.

I’m currently working on collision detection and the game looks terrible with hastily drawn programmer art. However, I plan on finishing the majority of the game today and focus on art and sound tomorrow.

Reporting for Duty

This will be my 3rd Ludum Dare after I did the “You are the villain” and “10 Seconds” themes. Girlfriend is away for the weekend so it’ll be non stop coding and I hope to get something not terrible completed. I think music/sound will be key in this one as my previous games lacked them.

Tool list:

  • Language: Java
  • Framework: LibGDX (possibly Artemis as well)
  • Art: Gimp/Inkscape
  • Sound: Bfxr
  • Timelapse: Chronolapse

Happy Coding!

I’m officially in

I’ve been messing about coding this morning but I wasn’t totally sure I’d be finishing it and submitting it but I’ve made some decent progress so far.

Coding it in Java with LibGDX and Artemis. Using Paint.NET for graphics and might get some sound using bxfr or similar.

The idea: You are a fly that only has a 10 second life cycle. You have to breed with a female to produce offspring to carry on your bloodline. I’m not sure how to handle the first fly death. Two options, one where you keep switching to another fly in your bloodline and keep playing. The other idea is to make it so you have to try and breed enough in the first 10 seconds to get enough offspring to keep your bloodline going for as long as possible. I might just include both options and let the player choose.

Finished my first ever game

I have to say, choosing to do my first ever Ludum Dare was a great decision. I managed to finish my game to a standard that I was reasonably happy with.

Being the first game I’ve completed I wasn’t aware of the work that goes into the final stages. Tweaking and finding bugs is frustrating at times.

Anyway, looking forward to LD#26.

Finally, I have something that looks like a game. The scope has changed from the original concept due to a lot of issues.

The aim is to kill the goats and as you kill them, stronger goats replace them on the map. The goats don’t attack you back and they just wander around oblivious to the bullets riddling their body. However, kill too many goats and the big bad killer goat comes…or he will when I get that far.

I’ve wanted to quit a couple of times when I couldn’t get things to work but my girlfriend has kept me on track.

Things left to do before I consider it finished:

Killer Goat added

Story screen at the start of the game

Things I would have liked to do and may do after the competition:

Items + Inventory

Weapon Upgrades

Exp and Level Up

Animals drop items that can be sold

Shop area

More Animals

Better AI

Super Hunter Villain Man!

Started my game a couple of hours ago and making steady progress. I’ve decided to make the game about an evil hunter who is trying to kill as many animals as he can to raise enough money to <<insert evil scheme here once decided :)>>.

The money the hunter gets from the animals is based on size/strength/rarity of the animal. If the hunter is lucky then he may get a chance to hunt the rarest of all animals, the elusive Ludum Goat. Mucho moneys to the hunter who can kill this beast.

I’ll have some pictures in future posts once I get something that looks like a game cobbled together and the name is a placeholder, maybe.

Looking forward to my first Ludum Dare.

I’m going to be programming in Java with Eclipse.

Art is going to be badly drawn using Paint.NET and sound will be hastily cobbled together at the last minute probably.
