Click to play The Winter!

I managed to complete my Ludum Dare game! I’m very happy with this one. I managed to make very good progress on the first day which gave me plenty of time to polish things off on the second. Here’s a screenshot of some lovely fire effects from the ‘Guardians’ in the game.

I’m looking for anyone interested in playtesting my compo game ‘The Winter’.

You must fend off a demonic force to defend your home by summoning spiritual guards of fire to help you.

A close up of the fire guardian attacking the central enemy of the game!

You can play an early build of the game here!

Download and play here:

Winter 002 (Windows)

You are the Wintershaman, and you must defend the village from a growing demonic meteor. Call upon the ancient guardians with LMB or Z and dash lightly across the snow with RMB or X.

I’ve made very good progress for the first day. All the basic gameplay and a lot of the artwork is in this build already. Tomorrow the main focus is extended gameplay, music and the other things like UI and intro screens.

Sorry for the bad video quality!

It’s dangerous work making games. You could get caught between a demonic meteor and a fire guardian…

Winter (Working Title) – Demo

You are the Wintershaman. It is your duty to defend your home against the hellish demon that fell from the sky at midnight. Plant the essence of sacred guardians and let them grow with LMB or Z, dash away from the demon’s attacks with RMB or X.

Playable Demo (Windows)

I’ll add more OS platforms later! Currently got most of the players mechanics working, you can even fight and kill the main enemy however

Snow and Rocks

Something is happening I guess…

The idea of the game is to grow fire guardians while a demonic meteor grows and spawns greenish hell across a barren snowy wasteland. You have two controls: plant and dash. You move towards to mouse.

So far I’ve got more mechanics working than I had expected. Here’s a very stupid video of what happens if you spawn way too many guardians. It sort of creates a supernova like glow that encompasses an enemy…. Might be a bit much.

One button down, one to go.

I’ve got one of my two buttons working. I’m dodging the point a bit by using the mouse as well but hopefully that’s acceptable. It is not a button after all.

This is the significantly easier button however so there’s still a lot to do.

I’m in, of course.

If I can do Ludum Dare I will. I’m back for the compo and hoping to do better than last time. My primary aim is to avoid over complicated mechanics and to bring a simple game from concept to completion.

My tools are as follows:

Unity3D v5 – engine
Visual Studio 2012 – programming
Blender – 3D modelling
PaintShop Pro – textures, art, image editing
SAI PaintTool – digital painting
bfxr – sound effects (I think, may change)
LMMS – music
git – version control
Texture Packer – spritesheet editor

Code Base:

CGS stands for Core Game Systems and it generally contains a bunch of useful tools that help speed up development:

Event driven communication between components
Unit test tools
Save/load functionality
Numerical ‘stat’ class that you can apply modifiers to
Physics based character controller
Debugging tools
Time and file utility classes
Zip file of framework code:

Hey guys! Before dinner I’ve uploaded the first trial build of my game. It’s currently very much in the unfinished phase but if you have the time download it and try it out! The controls are:

WASD – Move
E – Interact/Pickup/Use
Click Items On Bottom Bar – Use the item (red bowl is medicine, blue vial is cloaking potion)

And the aim of the game right now is to get medicine for the injured traveller in your house. There’s nothing else to do right now.

The game can be downloaded for Windows 64 bit here.

To let you know what you’re getting yourself into, here are some screenshots:

You can collect the red herbs in the top image to create medicine. The bottom image shows a prototype of your house.

Where’s the monsters? Well I’m still working on the storyline… :/

I don’t know if I’ve monstered enough…

I’ve done a lot of gameplay development so far but I’ve failed to decide what sort of world I want to create. I keep trying colour schemes and themes but I can’t settle on anything. Hopefully I’ll manage to make a decision by tomorrow.

My other worry is that I’ve not made my game monster-y enough. I started out with one kind of story, and I’ve gradually changed. It’s going to be interesting to find out what I end up with.

No time for chatting, there’s a game to make!

Game still has no name… but stealth is working well and you can kill the enemies if they’re not looking at you.
