Now tracks how long it takes to beat. Also added timespace anomalies……

I’m starting to feel unwell again, I’m hoping that I will have enough energy to add all of the other features I have planned.starhook02

Whew. Not used to these late nights!

Struggled with more programming problems today. Aside from not having the controls super-tight, I think the code is pretty much there. Still a few more features I want to add, and some background music, and *stuff*…….

Playable version: “Starhook”!

Well it looks like I’ve already achieved my main goal of having something playable. Now, to work on making it interesting!

While thinking about minimalism, Pong came to mind, and I wondered, “How could Pong be even simpler?” My answer was: One paddle.

The game that I’m calling “Starhook” has evolved from there. The “hook” (see what I did there?) is that a new star shows up every 5 seconds. The more you can keep on screen, the higher your “Most # Of Stars” goes. So far, I think my highest is 5, and that might have been with slightly different settings. At the moment, different sized screens will also have differently sized paddles and play areas, so… take “Max stars” with a grain of salt.

Now, aside from adding all of the fun stuff I have in mind (and fixing the occasional collision bug), I hope to actually participate in the LD48 community a little bit. I’ve been getting pretty absorbed in code and haven’t stopped to look around and/or help others very much. We’ll see!

This morning my friend sent me the following email, I thought you all might get something from it too:

This weekend…
… sleep is overrated…

… food is overrated…
… showers are overrated…
… going pee is overrated…
… friends are overrated…
… sex is overrated…
… resting is overrated…
… relaxation is overrated…
… doing nothing is overrated…
… lunch is overrated…
… being sick is overrated…
… having dinner is overrated…
… going for a walk is overrated…
… watching a movie is overrated…
… and other weekend activities are overrated too…
All that matters is time, and your game.
So go for it! And at the end of the weekend, you’ll be a tired, hungry, slightly obsessed but satisfied game designer and developer with a brand new game to be proud of!

My first LD48

What I’m prepared to use on this challenge:

GameMaker Studio (with a base file that helps initialize cross-platform window sizes & stuff, available here: http://east.sedalu.com/ld26/2013LD26Base.gmz )

Reason, real-life instruments, BFXR, Audacity

ArtRage, Paint.NET, gimp, Inkscape

My goal is to have a finished, playable game by the end of the competition. If it’s fun or interesting, too, that would be great!

I’m also looking forward to participating in the community. With a few real-world commitments over the weekend, we’ll see how much of that I’m able to do.

Best of luck to everyone!
