Post Mortem: A puzzle game about ciphers

I woke up on Saturday morning and the first thing I did was to check the LudumDare website for the LD theme.

I always wanted to do a game about cryptography and when I saw that the theme was “An unconventional weapon” I knew that this theme was the key! I made breakfast and got scissors, pen and paper and drafted my idea on paper. It was clear to me to choose the Freemasonry cipher, as this is one of the best looking chipher letters.

Here is my draft on paper. My wife was my offline playtester.

Saturday 8 o’clock.

My first draft.

At 12 o’clock I had layed out the whole structur of the game. States, Classes, Assetloading and basic Menu structure. The game was not much more than a background picture and the letter ‘A’.

At 7 pm I had managed to draw 10 letter cards and the main star of the game: FRED the roboter. He needs to defend his planet against the blue enemy (you have to decipher his name yourself…it’s in the game :-). The blue enemy who is attacking Fred’s planet has an unknown language. So Fred needs to decipher his words to get in touch with him. It’s his only chance, because he has no other possibilities to defend himself. Fred has only one weapon: the “The power of language”.

8 pm: I was not happy to have chosen a textured art style, but I had no time. Ahh.

At this point I had to do a walk to get my mind free. After the walk I started to draw a new robot in flat design style. This was the best lesson I learned in this LudumDare!

1 am: I changed the overall art style to flat design with a limited color palette. I implemented the randomization system to the letters and put in a lot of tweens. Tweens really save a lot of coding time!

2 am: Bedtime!

Next day I reworked all graphics to flat design and created the missing 42 letter cards. 26 latin letter cards and 26 pigpen ciphers. Uh…this was really a lot of repetitive work, but i wanted to draw the cards instead of generate them.

8 pm: I created and added sounds to the game. I added more tweens and transitions and created win and lose screens. I added a pause screen (press ‘p’) with some hints to play the game. I created the main menu screen and added the laser weapon to the blue guy. The laser was the last thing I added. Woa…i missed to add this for a long time. Without my tasklist I would have forgotten this ;-). Tasklists are important!

1:30 pm: Finalized and Uploaded.

Now Play the game and have fun!

Happy cipher!

This morning, I sorted my ideas with a coffee and started to draft with scissors.

My wife was my playtester. After a couple of interations I found a nice puzzle mechanic.

Now, my first screenshot:

I’m in for the 4th time. 3rd time I do the compo.

I haven’t looked at the votes yet, so I’m going to be surprised when I wake up tomorrow morning in Germany.

Here is my Toolset:

Engine: LÖVE or GoDot (not shure yet)
Editor: Notepad++
Graphics: Paint.Net
Sound: http://supercollider.github.io/ and bosca-ceoil

Good luck all LDers!

A bit shabby!

I just played the game Lumen and it’s a very nice Idea and very great game! Nevertheless after reading the description i realized that the author didn’t make the music and sounds himself. He said that he just took some free assets.

So why people give a
“#42 Audio(Jam) 3.77”

Sorry for but i don’t understand this! I putted a lot of work in the music of my entry and get only a
“#323 Audio(Jam) 2.67”

I think the Audio category is the most wrong voted category!

Sophie’s World – post mortem

Sophie the cloud

Sophie’s World

So, it was my first time joining the Ludum Dare game jam at all. You can’t imagine how many times my husband has told me about it (or probably you can, given the fact that you yourself might as well do this all the time 😉 ). For him, it was the 3rd LD – not to mention all the other game jams he has joined so far. So you can imagine that I was quite excited that I was about to join him this time!

Having never done any serious digital drawing at all, I have wanted to try the Inkpad app on the iPad for a long time now. The LD seemed like a great opportunity to check it out and learn a view things about vector graphics. So that’s how the adventure started.

The idea
We decided to make a game for children without any violence. At first, our idea was to create a couple of fast touch mini-games with cute graphics.

Along the way
At the beginning, I just started doodling until I came up with a cloud – Sophie was born! We then thought about what game we wanted to create around Sophie.
While I went on drawing, my husband put together the game framework. He chose LÖVE because his experience with LÖVE did help him a lot in previous gamejams. Besides, he started to implement all needed LÖVE functions in the Sony PSM SDK in C#, because originally we thought of this game as a touch game.

FredWhat went great
The best moment was when my husband made cloud Sophie rain for the first time! Now I know why he enjoys creating games so much – it’s so great when your game and characters come to life! I’ll definitely do this again.

What went wrong
Soon we realized there won’t be enough time to create more than one mini-game, so we had to change the game concept a bit so that it would fit to the theme. We then decided that “You Get Only One RAINDROP” from Sophie every day.
It also would have been great to have the game as a touch game, because for me it seems that it’s much more intuitive for children.
We also could have worked more on the sound effects and the clickable items, but again, we ran out of time at the end.

You can play our game here.

Sounds – bxfr
Music – keyboard
Graphics – Inkpad
Engine – LÖVE and Sony PSM SDK

You can watch a video of the game played on the PS Vita:

I finished the game mechanic. My wife helped me a lot doing this cute artwork and because of this, i participate this time in the Jam. Now it’s bedtime and tomorrow will polish the game by adding sounds and animations :).

Good night LDers!

I decided not todo a traditional platformer or a pixelrated game this time. I decided to create a game for little kids and my wife is doing all the artwork :).

We called it ‘Sophie’s World’ named after the famous book!

Hi everyone! Say Hello to Sophie, the little cloud we created using Inkscape on the iPad. I’m quite excited, it’s my first time to join the Ludum Dare game jam after my husband told me soo many times about it. So he does all the coding while I’m trying to do my best with the graphics. We’ll keep you posted!

Now let’s start this LD.

Hey guys,

it’s always great to read all the posts here and to watch different development styles!

I recorded a play of my ice hockey brawl simulation for you.

Hope you try it yourself.

So you want modern techniques, you want WebGL and HTML5?

I ported this my LÖVE (love2d) game to the famous love2d-webplayer. If anybody needs help in porting his game to webplayer, feel free to ask me :).

Here you go, try: Fisticuffs

Fisticuffs is an ICE HOCKEY brawl game for 2 Players!

Fisticuffs is not a real game, but rather a simulation where you can bet for the winning team.

The Pussies are working as team, where dicks are the lone wolfs. Dicks are proactive, where pussies are reactive.

Just try yourself
