After missing out on the last Ludum Dare, I got to participate in this one! Still, didn’t get to put the entire weekend into my project, but I got to try out using Game Maker Studio (ran into a lot of newbie problems), and put in about 12 hours in total. = (

I didn’t realize until too late that it would cost me to build an HTML5 version of the game, so that ended up costing my wallet.

Sorry about the rough edges!

My goal this time around was to create another slightly meditative experience. Iaido has more action than my previous entry, Bubble Bubble Bubble Pop. My initial thought was to create a huge animation cooldown at the end of every attack, but I wasn’t able to pull that off (the controls weren’t rewarding and just felt like the game was holding you back).

I would like to revisit the game and build an exciting and rewarding combo system. It feels like with the right changes the game could have a rhythm and test your reaction skills.

My first Ludum Dare was over three years ago, and I had a lot of fun jamming with friends. I haven’t participated again until today, and I have to say that this compo and community are great.
I’m learning to use Haxe and HaxePunk this weekend, and sticking with the reliable Photoshop for art. I don’t know if sound effects will make it in; if there’s extra time at the end I’ll fiddle around in Bfxr.

The theme ‘alone’ wont describe my first experience with Ludum Dare, but I’m excited about participating just as well!

Our team’s game is going to be titled Surume: The Little Squid, and I’m excited to say we’re collaborating across time-zones (A couple of us are the in Northern California, a programmer is somewhere in the States, and musician at Berklee).

We’ve all got a game set up in our heads, but are going to type out and condense the design and assign individual tasks within the next hour. The game’s going to be built in Flash with the Flashpunk game engine.

Alright, off to starting on those pixel animations!
