I know it doesn’t look like much, but this is the culmination of a lot of work, and it will make a lot more sense tomorrow.  Anyways, the grey dot is a wolf, the red dot is a dead lamb, and the brown dot is a fence.  You have to kill the sheep and you have to go around fences.  In reality I can do however many animals and obstacles I want, but I’m going to keep it simple.  If time allows I might drop in a goat.  I still need to add in some scoring components.  Its a puzzle game and the sheep move in a pattern, the idea is to minimize the number of turns it takes to kill all the sheep. At this point I just have to create some simple ui stuff to make the game reasonable to play and design some levels.  Tomorrow I’ll tackle graphics and sound.

About half way through the first working day

I’m about half way through my first working day.  Things are coming along.  I haven’t killed myself, I slept well last night.  I got a few non LD things done today.  All in all, its going pretty well.  I have another hour or two of coding until I have a working prototype going.  At that point I can start tweaking.  Tomorrow will pretty much be cleaning up, adding graphics and sound, and testing.  Pretty sweet!

Plan of attack

My plan of attack for this LD is to be done coding today, which would be a change for me. Half of today I will spend getting the game functional.  The second half will be to design levels.  This is a puzzle game after all, so most of the fun will come from well thought out levels and solid progression. If I don’t get that right, all the art and sound in the world won’t make the game fun.  So my major focus will be to get that done tonight.  Tomorrow will be about art and polish, and if I find that it isn’t as fun as I would like, then I can always go back and rework some levels if time permits.

Got my idea.  Trying to keep it simple.

Basically, its a simple turn based puzzle game, you the wolf are going around killing sheep.  I’m going to keep the art to a minimum, and hopefully spend most of the time on puzzle design and polish.

So I plan to make a point and click game where your actions effect other people around the world and at first you are bumbling about making a mess of things and then you get the feeling for it and figure out what you have to do and then something happens at the end.  Anyways its kind of a play on our shrinking world.  Anyways, I want to have 7 environments, some sounds (nothing super fancy), a nifty glob trotting animation, and probably 20 more things that i can’t really have.

I was going to do something with webgl again but instead I’m going back to pixel graphics and html 5 canvas. Also, if I have time i’ll see if I can get web audio api working.  Granted that will limit me to just chrome users for the most part. I just have no idea what I’m going to do yet.

Well, it could have been better but all things considered it came out alright.  I had issues today that really set me back so there isn’t any sound.  Oh well, I learned a lot this weekend and thats good enough for me.

There are two cutscenes in my game.  I have all the art assets necessary to do both and the game so that is a small victory.  I have a bunch of coding to do between now and when I go to sleep tonight and I still have music to create.  I want tomorrow to be mostly level design and testing.

It been awhile since I’ve done any real art in photoshop so it took me awhile to get going with it this morning but I do have some sprites and one level background.  I need to work on coding now.

Hopefully I’ll be able to sleep.  Right now I have most of the artwork sketched out.  I’ll get as much of that in digital form first thing in the morning.  Right now I plan to have 3 levels.  Each level is a different feeling/mood and they progress from dark/dispare/depressing to anger/hatred to fun/uplifting.  In order to pull this off I need all three components (sound, graphics, gameplay) to all work together to create the same feelings within the player.  This is going to be difficult as I’m not a good designer, artist, or musician.  Its a big gamble and I’m sure I’ll fall short of the idea in my head but it would be awesome if it actually works out.

The plot of the game is basically your character gets dumped and he is consumed in his loneliness and dispare and he must work his way through three levels to learn and become comfortable in his new life.  And then I’ll probably have him get together with a cute redhead at the end for the fun of it to show that being alone is a temporary thing that you can learn to enjoy.

The Breakup…

I’m thinking of being alone following a breakup.  A dark period, many unknowns.  But you know what, it gets better.  I’m thinking of feelings, of metaphors.  I don’t have all the dynamics thought out yet but I want to capture that sort of emotion and growth in my game.

Dueling Dungeons

I’ve come up with a title and an idea for what I’m going to do. Its going to be kind of like multiplayer tetris meets a platformer like Jumpman where you and another unfortunate soul are stuck in identical dungeons and each player is attempting to kill the other by collecting powerups which do stuff to the opponents dungeon. The winner escapes with their life.
