What a surprise

I just wanted to find out at which August weekend exactly the next LD will take place, and oh well. For the last two years or so I never really managed to participate for various reasons. Now I wanted to take a few days off to make sure I can finally create a new Ludum Dare game, and now this. :(

Anyway, have fun everybody, maybe I’ll be able to join next time!

I finally got around making a video for No One Can Hear You Honk In Space, my sidescrolling space shooter for the LD34 Compo.

So if you’re interested in seeing a playthrough but haven’t got the nerve to play it yourself, go ahead! There are some minor problem with the game that I never encountered until recording the video though – most notably the small jumps in the character animation, not sure what’s going on there, maybe a framerate related issue.

Finally, if you like to you can play and/or rate the game here. I try to play the games of everyone who’s leaving feedback, so there’s that. :)

Sooooo it is done. The amazing adventures of Dick and Shorty. aka No one can hear you honk in space. aka Flappy Spaceship. After effectively about 18 hours of work, I’ve got to stop (although I’d love to spend 2 more hours on this…… got a lot of ideas, but also got work tomorrow.. priorities right?!).

No one can hear you honk in space.

 

So there it is. For those of you familiar with Rick and Morty… I might or might not have taken some inspiration from the show.

I really wanted to add some facial animations, you know, actual talking and changing eyes and eyebrows and stuff, but I guess this was a good point to stop and still get some sleep.

Wish I had started earlier.. now tomorrow is going to be a rather busy day. But well, I’ve got most of the gameplay and writing done, tomorrow is going to be about content/asset creation, polishing, balancing and stuff. Oh yeah, right, sound and music as well.

As you probably already derived from the name, this is less about growing than about a two button mechanic. Which is a bit meh, but also not as bad as it sounds.

So, finally, after almost two days I finally had a decent idea. And I’ve got about three hours to make a game out of it. And it includes writing a decent 2D platforming AI. Quite a challenge…. but I’ll do whatever it takes! 😀

..and I got nothing. Not a single line of code. For 5 hours now I’ve been pondering about concepts, but none is convincing enough (or realistic for the given time frame), and thus I haven’t even started. :(

 

Can’t even make a generic platformer with that theme… that has always been my solution #1 when nothing else seemed appropriate.

Well, what can I say. Things are going amazingly well. Don’t know why, everything just.. works. Initially I wasn’t even sure if I’d be able to participate, but I’m glad I did! According to my plans I’ll need about 4 hours for what remains to be done, so I guess that’s what I’m gonna do now. See you after the deadline. :)

A game where you basically play Jesus… sort of. And solve puzzles. By discussing with God about what miracles you may perform. Furthermore, you may talk to other beings.. such as Satan himself, or total strangers who may or may not help you out with your problems.

Finally got out of bed and started my concept. Basically an homage to “Escape from the Underworld”, but different. With controllable dialogues and stuff. It will be amazing!

 

Working with DBPro, and that’s kind of it really. But first… breakfast!

More fake blood than in the Evil Dead movies, ugh… this wasn’t really planned, but making all the decals stay there permanently instead of fading out after a few seconds had this interesting and completely unpredictable side effect.

Anyway, the good news is: The game is kind of fun. I already spent at least 6 hours “playtesting” it. You know, just in case there are any bugs…

A “king of the hill” style game essentially. With the amazing twist being that there’s JUST ONE HILL. Wow! Fits the theme kind of perfectly if you ask me.

Making some Progress…

This time I’ll focus more on fun gameplay mechanics instead of story telling and whatnot… an arena style game where you (wearing a sombrero for some not so apparent reason) have got just one shot to destroy every single enemy around you (which are not yet implemented) – if you succeed, you’ll proceed to the next round. Simple, but we’ll see where it leads.

It’s 5:45 (AM) here now, I just got up, took notice of the theme, said “let’s do this!!11” and here I am. I’ve got my idea and I wont hesitate to use it. So, brace yourself, for the one and only Desperado! (unless I’m going to change the title at some point.. in that case, brace yourself for that)

Tools I’ll be using:

  • sfxr
  • MS Paint
  • A bunch of other programs I haven’t thought of yet

It’s finally finished. And I am in fact quite proud of it. 😛

The second day of development went *way* better than I thought. I was a little skeptical of my time management up until this morning, but was pretty productive for some reason and got most things finished over 6 hours ago. So there was enough time left to polish the hell out of it (well, kind of).

Sadly, the actual gameplay is rather bland – but apart from that, I believe I achieved all the things that were on my list, including the tragic story, the depressing mood combined with occasional humor and a meaningful ending. :)

As usual, horrible visuals (I should probably stick to the more minimalistic styles, but wanted to try something else this time nontheless :D) but the story arc and my honest attempt to add a little humor to the experience should make the whole thing quite worthwhile – hopefully.

I just got up and have a shi… I mean, a lot of work to do today. But strangely I’m kind of motivated and optimistic that everything will work out fine. My sinister task for the next few hours: Implementing more death animations. Because slipping on a banana peel and dissolving into a cloud of red particles is not enough! Afterwards things like scripts, dialog and the narrative follow.
