A Game Made with Watercolors…

Well, that was the dream for this Ludum Dare!  I got hmm… about half of it actually painted out in watercolor. I still stuck with a watercolor theme in the game though… a weird chibi that paints enemies with her hair…?!  Go ahead and give it a try!

Ludum Dare – Let’s make this official!

I’m in! This will be my second Ludum Dare.

  • Game Maker
  • Photoshop
  • sfxr
  • inudge (maybe)
  • Watercolor paints, paper and brushes

I’m not sure what the theme is but I was thinking it’d be really cool to make the art in watercolor!  Here’s a piece I made a few weeks ago (if I do the game art in watercolor I’ll do a time-lapse of that, too)!

Here it is:  (just for windows at the moment):  Hearts Nexus

I am actually really proud of this.  And it’s kind of fun!  I don’t even care if anyone else plays it because I had so much fun making it and so much fun playing it!  I decided to go a little loose with the theme, I know most people would go literal with “worlds” resulting in a lot of space or fantasy action/platformers… I wanted to try something a little different.  I still think I kept pretty tight with the theme.  I can honestly say I never would have thought to make a matchmaking game without the theme.

Basically the object to the game is to click on two “singles” that seem the most compatible and match them!

Some cool features:

  • Endless Levels – The game will keep going forever.  Levels are procedurally generated after a point (even the room colors).  Singles will get faster, and there will be more and more of them.
  • Trait Weight – There is actually some depth to the way the personality traits are weight in relation to other traits and to each other.  I’ll let people play it to figure it out.
  • Randomly generated characters
  • Mad-lib style couple quotes –  Man I wish I had time to add more of these!

Stuff I wish I could have added:

  • Save File –  so you can come back and play later.  At the moment you lose your progress when you quit the game.
  • Different Sexual and Gender Orientations – I stuck to hetero/binary pairings because it would have really complicated things gameplay-wise (and I only had 48 hours).  I’m not trying to make any sort of political statement or anything.
  • Lose Conditions – Right now the levels advance regardless of how well or badly you do.
  • WALKING legs

There’s a ton of features I want to add.  Since I’m working with Game Maker, it’d be super easy to flesh this out and release it on iPad.  Here’s hoping! 😀

Oh, and I took some time lapse screenshots and webcam, so I’ll try to put that together as a video in the next few weeks!

Can you guess what this game is gonna be about? Well, it’s not much to look at, but even artists have to make programmer art before polish!  I decided to go with a less literal interpretation of “Connected Worlds” but I’m really happy with the idea and I think it fits.  I’m about 90% done with the game code.  I’m really feeling confident this is gonna be a pretty fun game (and girly!) game.  I still have lots and lots to do (which should be obvious) so I don’t want to use to much brainpower on social media.  I have a time-lapse thing running so they’ll be lots of WIP material. Anyways, back to work!

That means you, fellow devs who are procrastinating!

Ludum Dare 30 – Attack Plan

So now that Ludum Dare is getting closer, I’m starting to think about my attack plan.  I’m lucky to have my guy Kai assist me with life stuff (making sure I eat and sleep, maybe a coffee run or two).  He’s also a veteran game designer who is helping me with some more general design advice.

Day 1/Hours 1-3: Brainstorm and Planning

-Sleep (if that is even possible with all the excitement)-

Day 2/Hours 1-4: Build Prototype (aka the smallest amount of functionality for it still to be considered a game)

Day 2/Hours 4-8: Add Lots of Art and Shinies to game

-Break for an hour-

Day 2/Hours 12-16: Make some music. I’ve played around with a few music editors/generators.  I’m liking  iNudge and Abundant Music.  If I can find a way to turn  midi into something nicer sounding, I’ll be set. More experimenting tonight!

-Sleep (If I’m not dead by then)-

Day 3/Hours 1-4: More game content to flesh out the prototype.

Day 3/Hours 5-END: Polish Polish Polish!

Some of the things I’m gonna keep in mind:

  • Because my strength is art, my aim is to make the gameplay as simple as possible, and then polish the crap out of it.
  • Gonna focus on controls that uses only mouse.  That makes will make it a lot easier to port to mobile if it’s successful (one of the great parts of using Game Maker, it’d be so easy to throw it to iPhone and Android!)
  • I should probably walk around and do some quick exercises every hour so my muscles don’t atrophy, any tips with that?

Happy Luduming!

Soooo excited to participate in my first Ludum Dare!  I’ll be hunkered down the weekend in my home office, maybe take the Surface Pro 3 out if I’m feeling a little cabin fever.  GameArt

  • Game Maker Studio
  • Photoshop
  • PaintTool SAI
  • NotePad++
  • sfxr

Still not sure what I’m gonna use for music, I suppose I’ll have to dig around the community for ideas.  I am so excited!  I usually have to do some much of the business and graphics side of making games, I’m pumped to be doing some actual game DESIGN. 😀
