Although I am not overly thrilled with my game I am happy to be at the point of bug fixing and adding start screens etc and not rushing to add content. I only have three levels but I am really pleased with the last one. Hope everyones games are coming along well.

So I have been working on it for as much as I can since I got up and I am happy with my progress. Lots of animation and programming done. Still need to finish the player sprites then animate them though. Tomorrow/tonight is enemy AI then if I have time I have a good idea for a possible second level of co-op funscreenshjot1 Trying to focus on fun couch co-op mechanic based game play this time round as usually I try and do story to a certain extent:D

Hope all is good for everyone

I am very in. Again:D

Had an awesome time last time and can’t wait to go again. Made that gif really really quick with my shitty laptop mouse because I like it when people make stuff for their ‘I’m in’ posts:)

Don’t forget to eat, sleep and drink plenty-you will make much better games:)

Oh yeah and advice that I always give and fuck up is PLAN PLAN PLAN:)

Good luck to you all:D

Annoyingly long Time lapse:)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc70oYXsIf8

What went badly

As you can see in the time lapse that my original idea for the ending was a rap battle. I thought that this would be funny and a nice climax to the game. Turns out, yep you guessed it, I am not a pro rapper. It would have been helpful as I wasted a lot of time attempting to record and write a rap ahaha. Luckily I realized before it was too late and before I had done any art for that part.

Like everyone I hadn’t planned for so much fucking real life shit to get in my way and I spent so much time running errands and getting impatient waiting for busses. It was good to get out and clear my head though and I think it helped me to work harder later on.

After the rap battle thing didn’t work I was a little lost with what to do. Luckily it was all fine and the last room (The Temple one) was actually one of my favorites. But it shouldn’t have been. It shouldn’t have been okay but I got really lucky. This leads to my next point:

I should have planned more. My advice to others before it started was to plan and my plans weren’t as detailed as they should have been.

Player testing. Not one person had touched my game before I entered it. There could have been some game breaking bugs that I hadn’t seen or that occurred on different PC’s.

I had planned to add a section about how to help someone you know/yourself and I had already written it as a little extra thing that you could choose to read or not but I didn’t have time/energy in the end to implement. I do plan on adding this to all my games in future though.

There wasn’t as much gameplay as I would have liked. My first idea (which you can see in the time lapse) was to have a hugging game where two players were made to hug and sit on each other while playing. This was lots of game play unlike how it turned out. Maybe at least a few more quiz rooms would have helped the player learn more and have more fun.

What went good:

I leant a lot about animation. I discovered a style of animation I had never tried before but really enjoy. Along with this I found that I can make games that don’t use pixel art and can still very much enjoy making them.

Making a game about something I cared about. I still had drive to make the game when I woke up on the second day and that I am pleased about. Motivation is so important and I got lucky.

Getting lots of food and sleep. I wasted a lot of time eating and sleeping but worked harder from that with better energy that I think reflects into the game.

Wrote a Post mortem for the first time:)

According to the comments on the submission I had indeed helped people learn a bit and have a fun time being a snail and that is more than I could have possibly asked for when making it.

Cheers to everyone that played and commented on the game. I love the Ludum Dare community!

Small bit of advice I could give

ludum-dare

Hey everybody! Hope your last few months have been fun. Been really excited for this Ludum dare as the last one I only had a few hours in between annoying life, to be fair this month is barely different as I have exams all week but fuck it Ludum Dare I think we can agree is a lot more exciting. Been making tons of games and reading about time managment and shit so I am sure I can make this better than mine before. Heres what I have learnt since last time:

  • PLAN PLAN PLAN PLAN PLAN PLAN PLAN PLAN. I’m not saying I didn’t know to plan before but if you are working it helps so much to manage this in clever chunks. Means you get more done and less wasted time. Also PLAN BEFORE not while you are working. Make a plan at the start that you are going to work to(that is realistic(which means a lot less than you think you have time for)) and tick the things off as you complete them. When making a plan I personally want to do everything. The idea will naturaly grow and develop, of course this is healthy but you can’t do everything in the universe. Especially in a game jam! so make 2 lists. 1.)Ideas that have to be in the final 2.)Things I’l put in if I have enough time. Then from that I take the musts and split them into Art and Programming then in programming I plan the sudo code before I write a single line. This helps me:)
  • I am in no way an expert on time management but I am going to try and study myself more closely to find out things about how I work. Joseph Mirabello wrote a fantastically interesting article about the matter here: http://gamasutra.com/blogs/JosephMirabello/20140407/214931/How_Long_Does_It_Take_to_Make_an_Indie_Game.php
  • Oh and guys dont forget to eat and drink;)

mountain

Hope this is interesting/helpful to anyone in some way:) have a great time making games. Can’t wait to try as many as I can and lose loads of sleep this week:)

Also very interested if anyone else has good little tips on how they have had successful Ludum dare’s in the past.

DAY XXX

This is how the game looked at the beginning when I was testing out the player and zombie code I had written so far. During the first day. Something that I have learnt from doing this Ludum Dare is how fucking helpful planning is. Having a checklist and planning out code on paper first meant that I actually finished the project for once! I probably should have realized this earlier but better late than never hey:)Zombie movemnt gif

Hey finished ealier:)

Hi I know a lot of people do Ludum Dare and I think the community is fantastic.

I was just wondering if people would say a little about their lives and what they do/ want to do ect?

Good luck in the jam/compo everyone :)

Been trying but not had anything worth submitting the last few Jams so super pumped to enter the christmas one.

Also really excited to get my hands on the unity 2d thing and hope to be good enough to use that for the Jam.

Good luck everyone, take it easy :)
