Building Worlds

So, numerous set-backs have occurred over this Jam. The person I was working with has had to deal with holiday-related family stuff the entire jam. I had to do birthday-related family stuff. Several occasions have come up where I’ve had to deal with other people exhibiting abnormal and negative behaviour. It just hasn’t been a good few days.

Given that, there is absolutely no way I’ll be able to manage pushing this into what could be called a “game”, especially given there is only a little over three hours left. Still, I’m rather happy with how much I’ve gotten done, and it’s been a great refresher for me, as I’ve been away from coding for some time.

Amid myriad improvements to existing code, in terms of making it actually work how I intended it to, and making everything function, I’ve added saving a loading of the map, gotten a few more tiles done, and have been building up the structure of the level.Basically I’ve got an explore-able tile-based 2d-sidescroller level here, and not much else.

Just a quick update here to say:

We’re going with a tile-based world, so I’ve spent the last while implementing a tile system, and getting everything working.

Time to play with some non-random boxes!

I’ve implemented an entity system, and a basic collision test, and this is the first demonstration of all the pieces of what makes up an entity coming together on-screen.

After a good night’s sleep it’s time to get started on this thing.

Got the basic renderer up, and functional.

Let’s get Jammin’.

A friend and I have decided to do the jam together, and this is my first time. We didn’t spend a lot of time thinking up ideas, but You Get Only One is a solid theme.

I managed to hammer out an idea that is both simple, interesting, and I think will provide for fun game-play within 5-10 minutes of seeing the theme, so I couldn’t ask for much more. That idea may evolve. as time goes on, but this is a good start.

Best of luck to all other participants.
