Phew! We did it! We are super happy to submit our game!

We present to you,


An action packed platforming experience with power ups, secrets, spikes, and exploding robots. Play it HERE.

Trapped in a room with a strange monolithic object, as you collect the keys scattered around the room, you can’t help but think that the tiny figure inside looks an awful lot like you.





We had a blast working on Monolith this weekend and are pretty excited with the result. Sure we had to cut some features and scrap some ideas, but that’s the fun of Ludum Dare!

“First time working in 3D, interesting but fun! Also I still don’t think it counts as 3D but Josh says otherwise…”

Update 10: The Final Stretch

Short update.

About 3 hours left and there still feels like there is a lot to do.

Because there is.

It’s that time of the Jam where we start figuring out what needs to be cut and what needs to be finished in order to make the game playable and fun.

And during these final hours it’s easy to forget to take care of your self.
Eat dinner (or whatever meal is time appropriate to you).
Stay hydrated.
Self care is important!

Good morning everyone!
There’s only about 9 hours left in the JAM. That’s crazy! In the beginning 3 days always sounds like a lot of time. Now that we’re in the final stretch, it never seems like enough.

So let’s get to it:

Where are we?
We’re getting really excited about our project and we can’t wait to have you all play it! Word is, we may even have enemies for you fight this time! (Our last Jam game had combat, but no enemies. Sad day.)

Has been going beast mode on getting the levels into the game and tweaking player controls so that they feel just right.

The power behind the throne. He’s doing everything he can to add all of the features Dan and I can throw at him! I think he’s currently working on adding powerups?

Okay, I just asked and that is correct. Phew.

Denver (That’s me!) Twitch / Twitter:
I’ve been focusing primarily on art and animations for the characters. I did however get to spend a good amount of time on sound effects and music. I still have some more sfx to work on, but I’ve been able to get a good portion implemented so far. I’ve also been in charge of keeping you guys updated on our progress and brewing coffee!


There is is a lot left to do, but we’re nearing the end so here’s lookin’ up!

Update 8: Starting the Final Day

These things always go way too fast for my liking.
But I guess time flies when you’re having fun!


The process of creating our player character.

We’re nearing the 48 hours mark which means we have about 24 hours left. Which isn’t a whole lot of time when you consider that you’ll be sleeping part of it (self care is important!)

Don’t give up Jammers, you can accomplish way more than you think in this last day!
With that said, here’s some stuff we’ve done or are working on:


Level editing in Crocotile3D.

Dan has been absolutely killing it in level design today.  First thing he did when he woke up today was open up Crocotile3D and start modeling.

That was about 12 hours ago.

It’s really great having someone on your team who focuses most of their time on the flow and feel of each level. What I’ve played so far has been a lot of fun and I can’t wait for you guys to experience it!

Who needs to punch when you’ve got swag?

Again, Josh is awesome. As our primary coder he’s been making this thing actually playable for you all.
The game is feeling great (imho) and I’m really hoping you guys will have fun. We spent some time last night deciding on a plan for music and I think we know what we’re going to do. Josh and Dan will most likely be the music boys this time around.

Robot Rocket Spider Drones? Check.

I have been working mostly on animations today. I should have the player completely animated as well as some enemies. Which gave me time to actually work on some visual effects such as dust and explosions. Now, if we have time to implement those types of finishing touches, we’ll already have them made up. I was also able to spend a little time today on sound effects which was really nice. Audio is usually where we lack in our jam games so we’re really trying to be more conscious of our time this go around.

Update 5: Past the First 24 Hours!

How is everyone doing?

For those of you doing the 48 hour compo, you’re halfway there! Have fun and keep on keepin’ on! You the real MVP.

For the rest of us in the 72 hour Jam, same thing! Keep goin’!
Everyone should have their game idea fleshed out enough to be working on it by now. And hopefully you’ve been working on the basics long enough to be getting into the meat of the gamedev (level design, content/asset creation).

During these next 24 hours do your best to finalize gameplay and get those assets made! And don’t forget about sound effects and background music! For us, music is always an after thought and we are never able to get sound quality to our liking. Make sure to reserve some time either during these 24 hours, or the last to dedicate solely to audio! If you have a team member specifically for that, great! If not, you can always recruit someone either via the LD forum (where we are now) or on other social media platforms!

Here are some great tools for audio things if you need them:
BFXR – Sound Effects
FL Studio – Music
Or just Google “Free Music Making Software” & “Free Sound Effects Software”

Also, we also are in need of a musical person if anyone is free. Hit me (Denver) up on Twitter!


  1. We don’t have a name for it yet.
  2. Player animations are almost done. (I have one left) If I have time, I’ll revisit them to polish them or add little flourishes / extra frames.
  3. Now I get to animate enemies!
  4. Dan has begun designing the levels. If we have time, we’ll flourish the tilesets.
  5. Josh has been KILLING IT code wise. This is our first time working with 3D and we’re pretty happy with the results so far. At one point, we accidentally made an Attack on Titan game. #sorrynotsorry

  6. I have been informed by the team that it’s not “3D” it’s “2.5D”. Same thing.
  7. After a nice team meeting, we have agreed that it is, in fact, 3D. And we didn’t even have to go to our discussion chairs.

Good morning everyone!
It’s currently 8:34 am and we’re up and ready to go!
Josh is currently on a morning run (and it’s 35 degrees Fahrenheit outside, he’s crazy).
Dan and I are at our computers ready to get this show on the road.

Though we’ll probably get some breakfast of some sort when Josh gets back. Then we’ll get this show on the road.

Update #2 Getting Some Rest

It’s 2:58am as I’m writing this.
Dan and I worked on level details and laid out a plan for tomorrow.
I got some early player and enemy concepts made up.
Josh is still hammering away at the framework.

Dan and I have decided to call it a night and get some rest so that we can hit tomorrow hard.
Josh is a robot and will continue to program until he either 1. passes out at the computer or 2. dies.
Hopefully the former.

Update #1!

We started the night off by going to to get some dinner and then stocking up on snacks.
It was delicious.

The theme was announced while we were at dinner so we began to discuss possible ideas immediately.
The current time here is 12:25am so we’re about 4 and a half hours in and we have finished our initial brainstorming session and we have our idea!

We laid out the majority of our game and what we need to do to get started!
Tonight will mostly be setting up the framework and some more concept sketches. I’ll probably start getting some early in-game assets goin’ as well.

RocketDad Update!

Good evening!

(Time of writing this, 7:37pm)

We just ate dinner that my wife made and it was delicious. Taco Soup! <3

Sun Wukong can finally perform his mighty 3 Hit Combo! We’re super excited about this and it feels really good in game. Now we just have to get enemies. 😛

Dan and Josh are currently working on balancing the jump mechanics to make it fair for all players and I’m working on more player sprites.

Here’s some actions that we have working for the player:

Super Jump
Double Jump
Hanging by your tail
Ground Pound

We’re hoping that by the time we’re done adding all of the movements and abilities for the player, that they’ll have a lot of different actions they can string together for a fun playing experience. Hopefully we’ll have more gifs for you in the future!

Unfortunate Fortune

Well, I’m callin’ it now: I’m not gonna have anything done by either of the submission times.
I just had too much goin’ on this weekend.

But, it was a wonderful experience for me to start working on a project of my own in where I am doing the development as well as my usual art.  I def want to see this game through to the end and I would love to keep you guys updated on it’s progress.

I’m still gonna be workin’ this weekend, but real world stuff is taking up my compo time.
