Uninspired by the theme, I chose the easy solution of making the graphics minimalist, and used the occasion to experiment a gameplay idea I wanted to try out.

My game was made using Flash Punk, I used no image assets: except for the title, everything else is drawn with basic drawRect.  My nice gf did all the sounds using musagi and a mic (hence the Jam entry).

The game is a basic action-platformer, the little twist is that you have to use a staff as both a weapon, a defense and a propulser.

I banged my head against the wall trying to make the collisions work, but I am now satisfied with the result. In the end, the biggest weakness is the level design: I really suck at it, it took me hours to do six short levels and they are not really satisfying.  Glad I took the time to put a boss though :)

Anyway, feel free to give it a try !

SeedStory – Post Mortem

So, I finally managed to finish my game yesterday !

I’m completely burned out but satisfied with the result. You can check it out here.

What went right:

– art: letting my girlfriend do the art for me really was a brilliant idea ! I had to switch to the Jam category, but I needed the extra day anyway.

– coding: apart from some head banging against the wall  and swearing (BitmapData.draw(), I fucking hate you), the coding part went alright. FlashPunk is cool but I really should have taken some time to play with it before the contest.

 

What went wrong:

– conception/planning: I had a really hard time with the theme at first. Then I thought about a bunch of concepts that would fit well with the theme, how cool it would be to have this and that, and I started coding stuff. I built a complex system and then tried to figure out how the player would interact with it… I ended up removing a lot of things and wish I had time to remove even more things.

 

Lesson learnt:

Next time, I will try to organize my time like this:

1. Think of one concept of gameplay that fits with the theme. Make it SIMPLE.

2. Code a playable prototype as fast as possible. If it doesn’t work or won’t be fun, go back to 1.

3. Think of ONE thing that would make the game better

4. Code it.Test it. Go to 3.

Hi everybody !

I’m in for my second Ludum dare and I’m going to develop some kind of strategy game using Flash Punk.

I’m now 3 hours into the project and I’ve just realized you don’t have a right click with flash…  Back to the drawing board ^^

I’ve just submitted my entry. I am really tired but happy nonetheless !

The game itself is not so good but building it was quite fun.

The game uses flash, feel free to give it a try. (I ended up ditching the pan flute for the xylophone, hope you’ll enjoy it ^^ )

Hi everybody,

so I think I’m going to participate too.

I’ll be using/discovering FlashPunk on FlashDevelop for the game. Not sure if I’ll have time to actually finish something but I’ll try.
