Fowl Play PostMortem v.Final

Right after the compo deadline ended I promised myself to finish up to a good chunk of the game. (ADDED 2 MORE WEAPONS + ENTIRE REMAKE OF BOSS + ETC)
And I did use up a little bit over the allotted 3 weeks, but I manage to finish it!

I took most of the comments/feedback to better my game and I am glad I did it. It feels much better and dare I say? “..a little fun..”

I didn’t do so well on the competition, but I kind of expected much. I fell into a lot of small traps while making this game, but hopefully I’ll do better next time.
Once again, thank you for all the kind comments and  positive feedback. (without it I probably wouldn’t have learned anything from this)

-Added Post Mortem Game!!
-Post Mortem Game has AutoTarget Helper as “Right click”


-“M” key mutes the awful music and sound effects
-“R” key resets the level
-Rebalanced the Boss fight

-Put in new and cleaner background art

Post 48 hours mortem: FowL Play

After passing out for a good 13 hours I can think coherently! :3
I was able to finish my game with around 6 total hours of sleep.


FowL Play
Lets get started with some basic pros and cons

Pros
I quickly picked an idea and made a prototype that FELT NICE: I made around 2-3 prototypes really quick on Constructand ditched some of the game ideas that weren’t really fun to play with just boxes and cubes.
 

Love your character. JUST LOOK AT HIM. I WANT TO CHOKE HIM WITH MY LOVE. 

Don’t sleep the last day. Surprisingly this wasn’t too bad. I use to sleep on the last day, but other than feeling physically ill and hallucinating at the last hour, I got A LOT OF STUFF DONE.

Talk to people. It really helps trying to be awake.

Keep posting your work! I kept up with twitter and ludum dare front page with my work. It helps get some attention!

Cons
I did that thing again where I don’t know how to code something and still went with it. (boss fight) FFFFARGGGGH

Taking too damn long to draw useless things, like the weapon loading page. (it did turn out nice tho) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

GUI IS HARD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD FOR WAITING TILL THE LAST SECOND TO MAKE THEM. < just don’t
At the last few hour crunch, you really don’t have other motivation than to make more stuff for the game rather than boring gui work.

Finally, I learned a lot during LD again (as usual)
I was able to finish another cool idea that would’ve just been another game in the backburner, never to be seen in daylight.
I really think forcing one self to make these games help you as a developer.
As for this game, I never intended to add the sword and shield option in the early planning stage of the game just because of the scope of the leves and the bossfight.

But I’ll add post mortem game and keep updating via twitter and add the two weapons (maybe more) and more levels till the judging end (to give a well rounded scope)

I’m back again for my second LD48!

I really had fun doing LD again, but I wasn’t too proud of my work for this LD competition :c
My coding skills really lack and I should really plan ahead bettter…

Some things I could’ve done better…

I don’t want to be “that guy”, but I really thought the theme was difficult and ridiculous for a 2D artist 😡
It took me about 14-16 hours to actually decide on a topic/graphic scheme/idea for the game…
In here, I probably could have managed my time a bit better.
I mentioned that I wasn’t as confident on this competition, because my game keeps bugging out on me! >_<

Here’s the storymode video that should’ve worked…

It works fine when I run it on my computer, but som#*$(@#$–You know what I don’t know ;-;
Someday I’ll actually learn programming… :I

Some of the stuff that was cool!

So me and two of my other LD48 compo buddies (doing our own game ofc) were on skype, keeping each other awake by talking about stuff was super cool.

If you have a buddy doing the compo, call them up and just chat! I promise you, the work will feel so much easier! ( But keep your games secret ;3 )
It made this game jam like 10x cooler!

 

Finally to close it off…
Ludum Dare is probably the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me! I would like to thank all the creators/moderators of Ludum Dare for giving all of us indies an opportunity to shine :)

My first LD48 overview: LimiT

First off! It feels really awesome having to finish a game by myself! It’s not much but short and sweet… kind of like my brain-child. I’ve gotten SEVERAL AMAZING comments from awesome awesome people. Thank you so much (it means a lot).

With this, I can look at some stuff I did well/failed

 

SOMETHING I WOULD GIVE MYSELF A COOKIE FOR:

The most helpful thing I’ve done during the early phases of the game design. I really focused hard on a the theme and nothing else. I drew tiny creatures turning into people and pretty much developed a story around that.
I really thought the THEME is valued the highest priority in creating this game. (Not the only approach in making a game, just how I thought)

First day, instead of diving into massive artworks I created a schedule (stages, characters, items, effects). Putting most of my time on the environment and the least on effects. I actually learned to draw pixel art by looking and studying other pixel arts floating on deviantart and tumblr(if anybody was wondering). Compared to them, my art is pretty terrible (it’s true).

By the end of second day I started to really crank out code that isnt the basic movement (evolution stages whatnot) and pretty much through the last minute. You probably don’t want coding advice from me, even a rock can code better.

THINGS THAT WENT HORRIBLY WRONG:

I really really underestimated how bad of a programmer I was. I had to google half of what I was trying to do and wasting LOTS AND LOTS OF TIME. If you guys are art people using gamemaker or construct etc. Do not add a feature that sounds cool but have no real clue in. Googling takes time (LOTS).

As for art, I didn’t have too much trouble other than stretch your wrist out once in a while and don’t use too many colors! Keep it a simple pallet and it’ll look AWESOME.

…and that’s my experience from this LD48. I really enjoyed it and I might do it again next time 😀
