Heya guys!  Just a quick update: the net, catching different fish, and dying are now all in place! Check it out! (the fps is better in-game)

I still have a long way to go though.  todo:

– SFX

– enemy spawn system

– title/death screen

– music

– some animations

– difficulty curve

– ..probably stuff I didn’t think of

OK so now massive crunchtime bye!!

What I’m making? A fishing game of course! The idea is that you can control the ship with the mouse and the guy with the keyboard, and you have to catch as much fish as possible because capitalism.

You do this by harpooning big fish and reeling them into the net, and driving smaller fish in range of the net to scoop them up. But look out, cuz those big fish can cut your airtube and your body ohno! or something. and then you lose. :c

I’ll just be crunching the rest of the weekend to get all the physicstuff working bye!!

Hey, I’m doing Ludum Dare!

In my game, you’re a wall-jumping old guy with cool eyebrows protecting an ancient treasure from bandits and adventurers who want to steal your treasure by throwing your only spear at them, which you need to collect from their cold dead bodies or from the wall every time you throw it, like the old knight dude from The Last Crusade, but with a spear. I call it: #YOGO-spear. (I will most probably not call my game #YOGO-spear)

Development went pretty slow today, I’m taking it pretty easy. Lots of breaks and stuff. I got stuff done though, running and jumping and spearing also feels very gratifying.

Spawner Pawners Post-Mortem!

My entry for the 7-day RTS was a little two-player bomberman-like game called Spawner Pawners. Here’s the development process and some other stuff in a nutshell.

Initially, I wanted to make a more traditional RTS, but I realised I would be busy for three days just learning and implementing pathfinding, and I didn’t really have a great idea to build on. So, I challenged myself to make an RTS with these limitations:

No pathfinding
No AI

As I read the description of a game: “…2 player bomberman style weird territory annihilation game!“, a thought popped into my head.  Spawner Pawners is the result of that thought!

Maybe you’ll say “HEY RUBNA! This ain’t no goddamn RTS there ain’t even units u control what u be pullin’ some sorta trick on me? Huh? What? Huh?”

To which I would reply that it actually could be seen as an RTS; the bombs and pushable walls are your units, the spawners your resources and barracks in one tiny, handy package, and you need to destroy eachother’s base to win. It’s actually the most innovative RTS of all time!

(But secretly, I just made bomberman with a couple of twists and an artsy-fartsy graphical style, and slapped the label “RTS” on there for good measure.)

Some things I wanted to make but couldn’t/didn’t:

up to 4-player multiplayer! But I realised I could be happy if enough pairs tuned in for the 7-day RTS to rate my game, far less quartets. But maybe I’ll make this for the OUYA-port 😉 (I’m not making an OUYA port)

ONLINE multiplayer! But I had no idea on how to pull this off and the chance that two people would play at the same time would be very small.

 

Things that could’ve gone better:

Incredible loss of focus all the way through

Like, seriously. It took me like four times longer to make this than had been necessary. I need to work on my workflow…

…it just isn’t a good idea…

 

All in all, I’m pretty happy with how the game turned out. Eventhough I haven’t been able to playtest this against anyone, people who did play it seemed to have had a good time, and I certainly had a good time making it!

I think I’m actually done…

I got everything in my bomberman RTS game I wanted to get in. So I’m… finished? But this can’t be! How could I actually “finish” a Ludum Dare game?

I think I’m going to think on this for a while…

Well, enventhough I was anticipating LD26 since the end of LD25, I totally missed its start. But a couple of hours in I’m pretty sure this will be my most complete Ludum Dare entry yet! This is what I have so far:

-some mechanic for element switching, or ammo for each element… not quite sure yet.

 

Seems doable to finish, but I need to focus. Wish me luck! 😀

Whew, that were some exciting 48 hours! Except the 20 hours I slept in total. Those weren’t that exciting…

Anyway, here it is!

HEAVILY based on off Notch’s “breaking the tower”. Except it doesn’t resemble it much. And I ran out of time to work in a goal… Just pretend it’s “get as much population as possible” 😉 Enjoy!
