I’m in but don’t expect anything amazing

So this Ludum Dare (which I was really looking forward to) just happens to take place at the same time as my exams for school. I was a bit hesitant to join at first, but I decided to give it a shot anyway and make something super simple in the short amount of spare time I’ll have. Don’t expect anything too amazing (or anything at all, for that matter)

What I’ll be using:

-Engine: GameMaker: Studio

-Music: FL Studio

-Art: GameMaker: Studio, GraphicsGale, and (possibly) spARTan

-SFX: SFXr/FL Studio

Looking at how far I’ve managed to progress and the amount of work I have done, it looks like I’ll have to change some stuff around. The game mechanics will remain the same but the point will be to survive in a certain level (which is chosen at the level select screen) for as long as possible by making use of the abilities of certain monsters. Rather than introducing all the monsters’ abilities during gameplay, I’ll probably have a page with all of the monsters’ names and abilities. I’m also not sure how many stages I’ll be able to have but I haven’t changed my mind on having lots of monsters. I’ll keep making more as long as I still have ideas. So yeah, that’s a thing I’m doing.

My body decided to totally ignore the alarm I set yesterday. This isn’t good especially for a game as ambitious as mine. What do I do? Do I scrap some features? Do I quit? Do I enter the jam? Nope. I LISTEN TO HYPE MUSIC AND GET AN ADRENALINE RUSH IMMA FINISH THIS GAME IF IT’S THE LAST THING I DO!

Pretty much done with the assets for the first stage of the game. Scattered a bunch of stuff around which I’ll be placing properly later on. I still plan on making more stuff but I’ve got some of the basics down. Added a new monster and humans for that monster to devour. I’m gonna add one or two (or three if I’m feeling ambitious) more monsters tomorrow and then start making some puzzles. For now, though, I think I’ll call it a day. I leave you with this mess:

I’ve got a somewhat good idea of what I’ll be doing with my second stage. I’ve also decided to make it so that certain monsters will attempt to attack you and have thus decided to add a stealth mechanism where the player can hide behind certain objects to hide from hostile monsters (such as the spikes and pillars from the previous stage and the badly drawn bush in this one). Without further ado, here is my current concept for stage two (it rhymed so you know it’s meant to be):

Concept

I plan on recreating the BATMON (enemy from the previous stage, the cave) into a bird version for it to make more sense to have it out in broad daylight. I’ve also already designed a new monster in addition to having an idea for another. I know it’s a bit ambitious especially for my skill level and the time constraint, but I really want to have a lot of monsters with a variety of different stages. Or maybe I can make several reskins of the same monsters. I don’t know right now so I’ll figure it all out as I go.

I’ve completed my tutorial stage (actually did that a while ago along with the first monster) and two monsters (although one is missing his special ability which I’ve already animated). I’ll start working on some music then the next stage. The game is looking really good so far (far better than my last LD entry, too!) and I can’t wait to see how the full product will turn out!

I just lost god knows how long because of a tiny little bug. You know what caused that bug? A plus sign instead of a minus. I’m both relieved that I fixed it and furious that it existed to begin with. Ugh.

Monster controlling mechanic took forever to set up but I finally have it done now so yay! Now all that’s left in the tutorial stage is to add tutorial messages and bless my little bat monster with the magic of flight.

I’ve completed everything for my tutorial level except some water, finishing touches, aaaaaaaaaand… the main mechanic. The idea is to have the green slime thing (the player) take over the bodies of various monsters throughout the game and have the player BECOME the monster as opposed to having them begin as the monster. So with that said, I’ll continue working on this thing after a short break. Here’s a little screencap of what I have so far:
