TODO: pick a less ambitious idea next time.

Three hours in

The game is slowly taking its shape. The idea is that you have to manage a tree-like base (the theme kicks in here – each leaf has only one parent) and defeat the enemy. You’ll be able to build structures on leaves, such as energy generators, guns and such.

Here’s a screenshot of a tree with fancy evolving colors and a couple of disconnected, non-functional leaves.

Let’s do this

I woke up pretty late, and the bad news is that I won’t be able to code the whole day. On the other hand, I’ve got an idea ready. Well, let’s get to work and see how it turns out.

November challenge?

Yep. I didn’t have much time until now, so I’ve started working on my october challenge game in late november. It’s going to be an extended version of my last Ludum Dare game. I’ve rewritten it, and that’ll allow me to do things a lot easier than with original code. I’m not going to bother you with all the little updates, so I’ve set up a blog at http://rot13x.wordpress.com/ (rot13 username was taken, unfortunately). Feel free to drop by once in a while.

Also, I’m in the next compo. Good luck everyone!

magnet. postmortem

It was the first LD I patricipated in, and I’m quite satisfied with the game I made. I found the theme a bit too constraining, though I managed to get an idea of my game fairly quickly. So, without breaking everything in good and bad aspects:

  • Graphics. My programmer art really sucks so I went for a minimalist graphical style. My inspiration was Super Hexagon which manages to look really good without having sophisticated graphics. I think my game looks quite well, and that’s mainly due to particles flying everywhere.
  • Music. In short, there’s none. I found out I couldn’t make a good-sounding soundtrack and I didn’t want to resort to autotracker.
  • Gameplay. It’s unoriginal and repetitive, as it’s just your everyday top-down arena shooter. Magnet phase makes things a lot more interesting, though I got comments saying that it’s confusing.
  • Scope. I didn’t pick a complex idea, so I was sure that I could complete it in 48 hours. I was right about it, almost all mechanics were done during the first day.

Taking part in an LD was a great experience, and most of all a fun one. Looking forward to next compo!

I’m done!

I just finished my entry, a frantic shooter called magnet.

You can check it out here:

Almost finished

I just implemented waves, and that means all core mechanics are in place. In addition, enemies now have three possible behaviors so they’re much less likely to group up in one place. I’ll try making some music now.

Some more progress

Got the enemies working, I also decided on the graphical style of the game which was inspired by Super Hexagon. Also, color doubles as an indicator of incoming magnet phase – the higher its intensity, the closer the phase.

Going well so far.

Time to start

I just woke up and I guess it’s time to start making a game.

I came up with a simple idea – my game will be a top-down shooter divided in two phases that cycle every 10 seconds. In first phase both you and your enemies shoot bullets and can only hurt each other, but in second phase player and enemies are rendered harmless, all bullets can damage everyone, not depending on who shot them and they’re attracted to player who has to dodge them and possibly guide them into enemies.

Checking in for my first LD

Just wanted to let everyone know that I’ll be joining Ludum Dare for the first time.

My tools will be C# + XNA, Paint.net and some yet unspecified thing for sounds and music (if I have time for that).

Wish everyone good luck!
