Well, I didn’t finish my game in time for the compo, but I am not going to finish it for the jam either. I just ran into one too many snags and I got burned out on Saturday so I took today to unwind and catch up on house chores. Hopefully I’ll finish the game another time. I have a .gif of how far I got, but it won’t upload, so you’ll have to look it up on my twitter profile (@paracatgames).

The game is called “Shirt the Dogs.” An old lady happens upon a powerful t-shirt cannon and knows instantly that must use it to put shirts on all the dogs. It plays as a scrolling endless runner–kind of–but then you shoot a vertical shot from the bottom of the screen into the dogs, which scroll across the middleground at random placement and intervals. The design was going to have one large dog, one medium dog, one small dog, and you have to size the tshirt correctly. If you nail the dog, I was going to build in a little annoyed animation, but I didn’t get that far.

I spent the day struggling with a poorly-documented idiosyncrasy of the engine (possibly not documented because it’s so obvious to everyone else?), and around 9 PM Saturday, I couldn’t get the t-shirt “bullets” to fire. It prints to the console that a shot was fired, the shot was instanced into the scene, and assigned a color, but nothing at all happens on screen. I tried a bunch of stuff but just got burned out. To be honest, my heart wasn’t in the jam so I just didn’t feel like struggling through more frustration for something like this.
