I’m away from my computer this week and only got my phone so I can’t record new gifs of my game Earthpocalypse. So have the same one I posted in 3 other posts. I’ll be playing the games of all those who have commented when I get home at the end of the week.

Earthpocalypse – Post Mortem

With less than 24 hours to make my game due to school exams, I decided to lower my aim from making top 100 compo again  (My LD 32 game) to just trying something new. So I decided to try and make my first simple “strategy / management” game. My idea was simple, keep the Earth alive mine up all its resources to build a rocket and escape before everything goes ka-poot. Although I wanted to add a few more thing into my game, I am very happy with how it turned out despite my time limitations.

Gif 1 Earthpocalypse

What Went Well

Time management

This Ludum Dare started on a Saturday and I stated working on Sunday.

Surprisingly enough though I was able to juggle working on this game with studying  for my exam on Monday…

For a game not too centered on graphics, I think everything looks nice, its a fair note to say that the moon was a bit blurry due to being rushed last minute. The colour pallet was a retro gameboy as I wanted to get graphics as fast as possible and not have to worry about colour presentation.

The little man in the bottom corner had about an 40 mins spent on him, I know nothing about pixel art and coincidentally he just happens to look like one of my best friends.

What Went Bad

I have about half a page of ideas for towers and what they do. I didnt really think of how each tower would affect the gameplay and just ended up putting as much into the game without a second thought. The game turned out to be a bit easier than I imagined with everyone who won going for the exact same strategy.

Graphics Aren’t In Sync With Music :(

I tried so very hard to get this part right, It works for a wee bit then goes out of time. The song turns out to have one or two parts just less than a second shorter than the rest of the song, thus making it near impossible for me to figure out a pattern to sync the graphics to.

What I Wanted To Add

I wanted to make it so you would have to reach a certain number of research to unlock a new tower. This idea was dropped due to time restraints and lack of different towers.

The Moooooooooooon!

My plan for the moon was to have it so you could build ONE building on it, it would not effect the Earths health and would function 2 beats slower. However, the moon would rotate around the Earth positioned over a tower during X number of beats. This allowed for any building on the moon to directly affect a specific tower for a certain amount of beats.

The moon would be unlocked after getting halfway to your research goal.

Due to school having exams now, I only had less than 24 hours to throw together this somewhat strategical game.

In this game the world is dying so you gotta speed up the posses by using the earths resources to build a rocket and escape!

This might be my second Ludum Dare, cant aim for the top 100 games this time as have “pre-exams” that just HAD to be on now of all times… So I may spend just one day instead of the full time allowed. Or who knows, I may just screw my last exam and do this. We shall see.

  • Engine – Game maker Studio OR Game maker 7 (for the indie feels)
  • Music  – Beepbox (http://www.beepbox.co/) OR Bosca Ceoil
  • Sound effects – BFXR

Good luck to all!

Nearly at 100 votes, just need four  three two more people to rate my game! !

Thank you all for 100 votes, Im going to go and die in peace. See you all in like 15 mins or so.

Play it here if you want, I mean if you really want to, your life isn’t on the line… yet O___o

Just need 8 more votes to reach 100, this would be a great achievement for my first Ludum Dare!

(This is probably the lest effort I have put into a self advertising post…)

But either way, click here to rate my game!

I am editing this on my phone so this time I have no witty comments, jokes or “real” reviews from the White House to share with you all.  :(

So play my game here!

(Well if you want to of course, it’s not like I’m holding that one person you like so much hostage… O__o )

“Although this game may look interesting, the president is uninterested in playing your game.”

– The White House

“Despite what my security advisory told you, I downloaded your game and played it. Now everyone in the White House is trying to beat my score!”

– Barack Obama

Thanks Obama!

If the president of the United States of America liked my game, then so will you! *

Post LD version of Giant Spiky Ball of Death

Well honestly I planned to add in a lot of features but I am just burned out and am beginning to hate my own game now. Time to stop and just put out a more well polished version of GSBoD. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed working on this game and I’m proud of what I have done, but it has to end somewhere.

First of all, still on windows, not much I can do with that. Keyboard controls but no controller support as my controller at home is broken so I was unable to test the controls…

Second, the game now runs ONE MILLION TIMES FASTER!!! Well not really but at  least twice as fast, which makes a huge difference.

Play the new version of my game.

and while you are there don’t hesitate to play my LD version for comparison.

*Shameless self promotion (^__^) *

I would like to thank everyone who has played, rated my game and left  some very nice and encouraging comments! This was my first Ludum Dare and I will definitely be coming back for next time, rain or shine! Now here are a few gifs of my work in progress from the start of the Ludum Dare to now.

Progress on my post LD game, need more suggestions

Giant Spiky Ball of Death updates:

  • Much better controls
  • Added arrow key support
  • NEW ENEMY (splits into five smaller enemies, see below)
  • Removed main background (it caused my gifs to go up in file size by 20mb…)
  • Order change of waves (Bigger enemy comes before the shooting one)
  • Fixed being able to outrun the chain

To be added in the near future:

  • Controller support
  • Enemy kills counter after death
  • Post score to twitter?
  • HTML 5 version (Will be saving up in the far future)

Although I am not aiming to sell my game, I would at least like to see this project reach a more acceptable level of quality. Also as this is now more of a shameless self advertise, I need more people to play the Ludum Dare version of my game and give critical feedback. Below is a gif of a more polished and faster version of my game, but I will say now that the LD version is not too far off from this one. I have not released this newer version yet, as I am in need of more feedback on the original, but I will most likely after the voting has finished.

Continuing work with Giant Spiky Ball of Death

As the main part of the Ludum Dare has ended, I was lost and without purpose.Until now…

With all the amazing comments and feedback so far, I have decided to further improve GSBoD into a game that may not make money in the end, but at least be an acceptable project in my eyes.

So from for now I am rewriting ALL of my messy, rushed and uncommented code, changing it from this (seriously, what was I thinking!?!):

Bad coding

Into a much more clean, simple and (although not shown) commented piece of work like  this (my god that is much better!!):

good coding

I am also planning on adding in controller support as suggested and will then work towards fixing the major bugs, such as out running the ball’s chain. As of now, I’m not aiming to make money off of this, but I would at least like to improve this game to the point where it could make money (i.e Fully polish off graphics, audio and gameplay) .

Whelp, wish me luck, cause I know what i’ll be spending most of my time on now.

If you haven’t played my game already, you can click here to go to the LD page.

My first Ludum Dare and what went well

Posted by (twitter: @AEFXFreedom)

My first Ludum Dare was a great experience and although I got a little side tracked on day 2 I ended up completing my game with just over half an hour remaining for the competition.

The LD Compo started Saturday at 1pm for me in New Zealand and finish Monday at the same time of course…

SO what is the most unconventional weapon? Obviously something that can easily kill you as much as it kills the enemies! And that was my initial thought, GIANT SPIKY BALL OF DEATH!

Play and rate here

What I wanted to add:

– Title screen (sorta did that)

– Game over screen (Check)

– Main mechanic (Duh!)

– Variation of enemies (Check)

– Some sort of score system (Did a timer)

– Tweet high score (Chose not to in the end)

– Difficulty curve (I sure hope so, spent a long time trying to make it work!)

– Music and sound effects (Sound effects im happy, but the music is average)

What went well?

– Have you see the list? I kept it simple

– I planned EVERYTHING then TRIED to made a simple attempt on the first night

– I talked with friends and got some other people online to test my game

– I planned to end 3 hours early, this is a big one as I ended up going about 2 and a half hours over the time I aimed for!

So I think my first Ludum Dare went very well, and i am proud of what I produced in a short amount of time and had one hell of a good time!

First off, let me say. I am working on a difficulty curve. And yes enemies will spawn right next to you so please mind the frustrating cheep shots.

SPACEBAR will reset the game.

This is a windows only game sorry

Thank you all who play, test and provide feedback :)

Making great progress for my first LD Jam

For the theme, I thought what is more unconventional than a weapon that has as much of a chance at killing you as it does the enemies? And then it hit me… GIANT SPIKY BALL OF DEATH!!!

Its my fist time using physics in Game Maker so things are still a little buggy but I got the “Ball of Death” working so I got that going for me.

Things I want to add:

Power ups to make the chain shorter or longer

Enemy AI (Some will run at you, others may try to dodge the “Ball of Death”)

Sound effects

A bigger map

A scoring system

Title screen

Game over

The blood splatter effect I got from the amazing Zack Bell, his tutorial can be found here:

I’m not looking to do anything fancy, just get through this comfortably with more than enough time to submit a small and mostly finished game.

Tools that I’ll be using:

Engine: Game maker Studio or Game maker 7 (depending on how hipster I’m feeling)

Graphics: Photoshop, Game maker sprite editor

Sound effects: BFXR

Music: Fake Music Generator, Studio One (student version) for editing.

Best of luck to everyone!
