GargoyleSim Update

Posted by

The only regret I have about this LD is I never found the inner strength and time to finish the game into what my vision of it was, and to be honest I don’t think I ever will, but I did an update to make it a bit more interesting to look at (more varieties of better drawn evil spirits and randomized children drawn instead of being represented with textual smileys).

What the current release is missing the most are cut scenes between game days, in which our gargoyle hero has dialogs with his neighboring gargoyle, which were supposed to reflect on the ungrateful nature of their existance, to do such noble deed yet to be considered monsters, or even worse, stone statues. These were supposed to give the game some soul. In my vision of the finished game, I would rename it The Heart Of Stone.  Touchy, eh? 😛

There were no significant improvements to gameplay, but be sure it is not an easy game and there actually is a gameplay strategy to be discovered. Please don’t judge it to be too easy unless you reached day 4 with all the children alive.

Anyway, if you want to try updated, more colorful version of the game, with more graphics, here it is.

Web (if you can make unity to work in browser):   http://psihooo.com/simgargoyle/webplayer.html

Windows, Mac, Linux standalone (.RAR):   http://psihooo.com/simgargoyle/webplayer.html/standalone/GargoyleSim.rar

Windows, Mac, Linux standalone (.ZIP):   http://psihooo.com/simgargoyle/webplayer.html/standalone/GargoyleSim.zip

Android (though android version is most confusing as I didn’t manage to make dynamic text fields show up, so you won’t see current day or score):  http://psihooo.com/simgargoyle/webplayer.html/standalone/gargoyleSim.apk

Also this QR code should lead to Android version download (you’ll have to enable “install apps from untrusted publishers”):

A question for experienced Ludum Darers – what happens with games which are finished late? I gather they are not liable for competition and thats fine by me, but do you still get to officially submit them using the form or not?

Also, this “extra hour” being mentioned, is it in fact one extra hour after the deadline, meaning there is still an hour and a half left for submissions? It might help to enrich my unfinished game with crappy sound effects. Thanks.

Gothic bar

Some gothic UI. Yea it doesn’t look nearly as good as I wanted it to be, but time is running short, so short…

I got this

lack of time on saturday, and attendance of beer festival last night which turned out to be too good and left me with a hangover and a question how the hell will I finish my game in time, even with simplistic one-button game idea that I have. I’ll keep trying is all I can say, I got this so far. Aye got dis:

Didn’t do this in years… Since “greed” theme.

For this project I will probably be using Unity. Or a wooden log.

The theme :\

First of all me and probably many others h8 the theme, and think that if voting was done again, it wouldn’t be reelected.

Also, I think themes like these alienate contest participants from outside world even further. It is hard enough to explain to the “normal” people how you are going to spend weekend as it is, and now with this theme its even harder to communicate the idea behind it, I mean it sounds more or less ok when you read it on the internet but if I try to explain to someone that I’m doing a 48h game compo with theme being “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this” I’d get beat up by cool kids, or even worse, fall into dialog which looks like this:

“Take what?”

“… What?”

“You said its dangerous, and I should take… This something…?”

“Oh, hah, no, its a theme for compo…”

“Oh… Well, it doesn’t relate to me in any way and you will have none of my support, call me when you grow up”

Well, I can bitch about theme whole day long, but in the end I think I’ll just not participate. Too bad, I had high hopes for 20th ld, it got screwed over by theme comprehensible by  zelda fans only.

Of course, all may not be as black as it seems, and if an idea hits me I’ll get to work to finish it on time and eat my own words. But the only good idea I had so far is already being done by at least two guys (working as item seller).

Somethings wrong… I can’t reply to any post, I mean it looks like everything is ok but then I don’t see my reply.

Anyone else had the same problem? Well I guess you won’t be able to reply to this post then 😛

Baby steps

Looks like once again I’m starting late as theme is not appealing to me (I’m not into action games).

First I had an idea involving gangsters but then I realized I lack the willpower to do all the graphics required in such a short time.

So here is a screenshot of babysteps of my second best choice, as you can see digging is involved, and bad graphics.

And sure, enemies will be weapons 😉

Guess what

I’m joining in.. hopefully this time I’ll be able to dedicate more time then in last mini-ld. I’ll be using either Unity3d or flash (AS2).

For AS2 I’ll be using my own homemade framework called Playground Framework, I’ll upload it and post a link to it (is this a must?), but I doubt anyone but me will be able to use this messed up pulp of classes and functions….

Can’t wait to find out what the theme is! 😀

I vote against challenging camera, come on guys, there are so many cool themes on display.

This is non-compo version with a few small bugs fixed. If you’d like to go there and give this little piece of avangard a score it deserves, Satan would be peased.

MiniLD #20 FINAL – Greed

This was the first time I participated, thanks in advance to anyone who at least gives this game a shot. Since no-object-repeating rule was too crippling I decided to approach this project with a very light hart. It was made in 8 hours of sloooow work, and you can notice how artwork suffers in last few screens, in the end I even had to pinch a photograph from internet. Although very minimalistic, the game hides a compelling  storyline.

I’ll upload source when I feel like it right now I need some sleep (its 3:18 AM).

Here are some screenshots of beautiful prerendered scenery.

A screenshot of game in progress. As you can see its pretty much high tech stuff.

My first try at this

While the additional rule of no object repeating might sound like interesting challenge to someone (game about greed without massive amount of instances of one thing like coins to be greedy about), it kind of makes it harder for me as this is first time I’m participating.  It has really set me back in my mind and killed some of my enthusiasm to make serious gameplay, but enough whining, maybe this is good thing so I should start thinking small and actually have finished project by deadline. As the competition started at 5 am for me, and now its almost 10 pm, and I didn’t actually had any work done yet due to enjoying myself at beach, going simple is the right thing to do.

I though about using unity3d, but now I have an idea that is better off being a flash game. So I’ll work on that and let you know when I have some screenshots.

I still hate the rule though, sorry.
