About Henry McLaughlin (twitter: @henrythescot)

I'm a bit of a nerd and a bit of a geek. I like RPGs and platformers.

I mainly code in C# and will be distributing my games for free on GameJolt, which is a great site for freeware games; it even has some open source games!

I'm not a professional in the game industry. In fact, my only technology work aside from a few paid support jobs for family members is a slow-moving career as a programming contractor.

I took a break from game development in mid-2012, but I'm back and better than ever!

Party hard, everybody! :D

Idea: You are the Boss

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)
Saturday, December 15th, 2012 5:27 am

My game will be a boss rush shmup with a twist; you control the boss and the AI controls the player. Everything except that will look like a normal shmup.

The objective will be to get the player to lose all of its lives trying to beat you. If you lose, the player gets to the next level and you try again with a different boss. If the player beats the final boss, you lose.

I think that might have been confusing, but it’s 7:26AM while I’m writing this and I woke up about 2 minutes ago. :)

Are you ready? Are you ready to make this dream come true?

Ludum Dare and a Bit About My Warmup Game

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)

I’m excited for the jam.Β Very excited. πŸ˜€

I’m probably going to make something very simple. Something like a microgame which I can expand into more of a minigame.

As for Staraga (my LD warmup game), I’m going to continue with it after the jam. I wound up doing other things this week, but after the jam (and possibly polishing my entry after the jam) I will get back to work on it.

I’m very optimistic. I kind of have to be at this point; it’s what’s keeping me going after all of this failure.

Staraga – Day One Didn’t Go Well…

Day one is – for the most part, at least – over for Staraga. It wasΒ not a productive day.

I have the player’s ship in a Unity applet and it moves with the arrow keys. That’s about it. :(

Here is what I will (I mean it, IΒ will do these) do tomorrow:

  • Enemies with movement and Galaga-style dive-bombing
  • Enemy and player death
  • Enemy wave spawning
  • Items
  • Player weapons

I’m hoping for the best tomorrow. I really am.

My Warmup Game Idea – Staraga

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)
Thursday, December 6th, 2012 1:00 am

So I have my warmup game idea. It’s going to be a remake of Galaga with some extra features. The title – as the title of this post suggests – will be “Staraga”.

The extra features will be:

  • Individual enemy movement behaviors (that is, more than the entire wave moving left and right)
  • Multiple weapons (both guns and missiles)
  • Bosses

I will be making it in Unity using the Orthello 2D framework. I hope that I can get it fairly polish (even if that takes after the time limit I have set for myself) and then put it on Flash Game LicenseΒ for sale.

I am giving myself from noon EST on the 7th to noon EST on the 10th to complete this game, but I will take more time for polish if I need to.

Are you ready? I sure am!

Edit: Woops! I meant on the 7th, not the 6th!

Taking a Break From my Current Game and…

I’m doing the LD warmup weekend! Yeehaw!!

I need a break from my current project. It’s not going fast enough for me.Β I’m going to enter the warmup jam to speed things up for me. πŸ˜€

I haven’t decided what to make yet, but I’ll post again when I have an idea!

Missed the MiniLD, Prepared for the Main Event!

So I lost track of time and missed out on the Charity Game Jam aka this month’s MiniLD.

I’ve been working, but I won’t make promises yet.

The December 2012 Ludum Dare is coming up, and you can bet that I’m in for that!

I’ve been playing with Unity and the Orthello 2D game framework. As I’m writing this, I’m installing Unity 4.0 in the hopes that using it with the latest version of Orthello will fix some technical issues that I had.

For the LD, I might make a Retro Remake of a game that fits the theme or put a theme-related twist on an unrelated classic game.

That being said, no promises yet. Well, okay, it’ll definitely be a web game. I can say that for sure!

So Here’s an Idea…

Well, I’ve got something going, it has a development schedule (not a complete one, but I’m waiting to see how ahead or behind I get), but it occurs to me that I might want a break.

Thinking about that, I stumbled on the idea of polishing my miniLD entry (of course, miniLD hasn’t happened yet) for sale on FGL. It’d take quite a bit of polish, but taking a break from the game I’m working on now would be nice by that time.

Oh, and the game I’m currently working on should have a demo up on FGL some time next week. πŸ˜€

For those who don’t know, “FGL” stands for “Flash Game License”, which is a website where you can auction off licenses to Flash, Unity, and HTML5 games.

I’m going somewhere. Not fast, but I’m going somewhere.

Dreaming of Redeeming! – I’m in for Mini-LD

After getting over the depressed mood I had over not finishing the October Challenge, I decided that I want to try redeem myself by at least giving a real effort in the Mini-LD this month.

I’m not sure what I’ll make, to be honest, but it’ll be something simple.

I’ll probably use Unity for it, too.

This isn’t the end for me, not even close. :)

I Failed… Again. :(

Well, it’s time for me to apologize… again.

I failed to deliver… again.

I’m currently trying to produce something… again.

I’m resurrecting an old project… again.

I really hope it works out this time. I’m getting tired of working and not getting anywhere. :(

This post doesn’t have much of a point except to say that I’m sorry… again.

Really, really sorry.

Refined my Game Idea – Going Gothic with a Retro Remake!

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)

Hi there, everybody!

I’m excited here. I’ve refined my concept just a bit and came up with this: A remake of the GBA-era Castlevania games in HTML5.

I’m going to market it on Flash Game License, which is taking HTML5 games now.

It’s going to be really cool, I can tell you that right now! πŸ˜€

I’m in for the miniLD.

I’m going to be naughty and disregard the theme. Both of them. πŸ˜‰

My game will be an arty platformer about a girl navigating through a forest to get… somewhere. I won’t spoil the ending that I have in mind.

It will use a limited palette, as well. :)

Through the Gates of Hell, as We Make Our Way to Heaven!

I’ve got my idea to start with. You play as a sapient flan fighting sapient kittens to save his flan village.

Evolution, you ask? Well, it’s a post-apocalyptic world where life has recovered without humans. Domestic animals and gelatinous desserts have evolved to sapience and their society as at the medieval stage.

So, again, the player character is a sapient dessert. No one said that the evolution has to happen during play, after all! πŸ˜€

Time to get to work!

I’m just getting started, don’t you worry about that!

What’s This? A Last-Minute Change of Tools?

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)
Friday, August 24th, 2012 5:09 am

Why yes, it is!

I’ve been falling back in love with C# and SFML.Net. So there.

New tool roster:

  • Visual Studio 2010 Professional – IDE
  • Visual C# – Language
  • SFML.Net – Library
  • Paint.Net – Graphics
  • BFXR – Sounds
  • Milky Tracker – Music (if any)

The best of luck to all of you!

How does it feel to know… that you are not alone?

Thoughts about what I’ll do…

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)
Thursday, August 16th, 2012 8:28 am

I’ve recently gotten this weird… urge… to make arty games. I’m not sure why.

I might make a cool, arty platformer for the jam. Well, I might. Otherwise, I’ll probably make a shmup. I’m pretty good at those.

My warmup game is (provided that I can stop pushing the start+end back) going to be a little arty. Not pretentious – I don’t believe that makes for good art – but definitely arty.

And for the record, “arty” is a word; I don’t mean “artsy”. “Arty” is a good thing, “artsy” usually isn’t. I’ve had people get after me for that before, so I wanted to clear that up now.

Warmup Game – Doing One, Not Telling What

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)

It’s time for warmups, ladies and gentlemen!

I’m doing one in AS3, FlashPunk, and FlashDevelop.

I’m not telling what it is until I have a demo, though. :)

A Change of Heart… and Tools

Posted by (twitter: @henrythescot)
Tuesday, August 7th, 2012 9:28 pm

So I know that I said at one point that I was going to use C#, SFML.Net, and some other things to make a JRPG.

Those who know me at all should probably have known what kind of speculation that was.

I’m not going to speculate about what kind of game I’m going to make. That usually gets tossed shortly after the jam begins.

I am going to speculate about my tool set, though!

I’m switching from C# and Visual Studio to ActionScript 3 and FlashDevelop. I’m dropping SFML.Net and personal libraries for good old FlashPunk. I’m keeping the graphics and sound tools that I originally stated (Gimp and sfxr), though. I might use Musagi instead of MilkyTracker if music makes its way into my entry, though.

That being said, I’m looking forward to this even more than I originally was! πŸ˜€
