it’s a simple leap motion thing (so i reckon most of you won’t be able to try it out, sorries – will upload a video of it soon). submitted in the jam because i reused assets from another game of mine.

Senile Santa, cute kids & ruthless Rudolph – Post Mortem

Okay let’s keep it quick. Oh, entry HERE by the way. Also, just uploaded the timelapse.

What went right : not much, actually. Saved by animation (and humor) again heh. Most of the feedback I’ve had about this game says it is “unexpected”, which was intended, so I got that point right too.

What went wrong : There’s no actual concept or gameplay behing the game, just an idea like “oh that’d be funny if…”. Thus, after playing it once there is no point in playing it again :/ I realized that way too late, while I should have forethought it, and that got me in a pretty bad mood on the second day of the compo. You know, this “I’m not sure it is actually worth it” feeling.
Another pretty unpleasant thing was that I grew bored of the animation work as time passed. I truly love animating, but it is a very repetitive work once you get the structure and timing right, and I basically had to redo the very same animations with 4 different characters – boring.

Conclusion : I really have to focus on looking for a gameplay idea next time. Maybe I was too quick on getting started and should have spent more time thinking about the theme and what the game was gonna be.
On the graphic/visual part, I’ll try to limit the animation work needed (i.e. the number of different animated assets). Also, I feel like the general aesthetic of the game lacks some spirit, gotta work on that.

Anyway, that’s not enough for me to lose the taste of the LD. See you next time, have a spoilery gif in the meantime :

It’s already in the description but I’ll write it here as well : basically, I took part in the Art Game WeekEnd this weekend (we made this : https://vine.co/v/hjg2Te7a1we), but I really wanted to take part in this jam too because SHARKS. When I came back home , I saw the deadline was smoother than expected and that I still had 3 hours to make something. So here you go.

Tetchy Mrs. Sheriff Saves The Day – Postmortem

Posted by (twitter: @PolClarissou)

Hey yo, postmortem time with lotsa gifs yo. The entry itself is here

So here we go.

• I’m satisfied with my game. I guess that’s a good point to start with. Seems people also find it generally funny.

• Fast, accessible game. That’s what I’m used to do anyway : short funny games that don’t require huge investment.

• No slowdown or lack of motivation during the jam, nor did I switch to another concept for any reason.

• I had lotsa fun doing what I enjoy the most : quick animations.

As I already explained in my previous posts, the development of the game went in a somewhat cahotic fashion :

• Way, way to ambitious idea in terms of quantity of graphic assets/animations for a compo…

• ESPECIALLY when spending half of the first day messing around and watching a movie 3:

• Consequently, terrible time management which had me going jam because I was out of time.

also :

• Screwing software issues all the second day (apparently due to a conflict between two pen tablet drivers) : I had to reinstall the driver many times and reboot my PC, and to forget about Photoshop which went nuts. (Oh and that’s why there won’t be any timelapse : after the second reboot, I decided to only run what was strictly necessary – so no recording).

• Questionable use of the theme. I mean, the sections of the game could last 15 seconds rather than 10, it wouldn’t actually change anything. Beh.

• No screenshake :(

• Double check, triple check, QUADRUPLE CHECK that I can run every software and hardware I might need altogether without issues before it’s too late.

• Find something new to do in terms of game design. I mean, this one’s like a mashup of my previous LD entry (The Minimalism Quest)and my Fishing Jam entry (Crawl, Worm, Crawl !).

• I’m saying it every time, but I really have to learn some sound design and music creation. It wasn’t a problem this time because of the going jam thing, but for next time, y’know…

• Don’t watch any movie if already late. DUH.

That’s it ! Hope you enjoyed the game of mine, have a gif anyway :

Finally submitted !

So I just submitted the thing. It’s playable online (flash).

So about the theme : each sequence of the game lasts 10 seconds (or asks you to be quicker). That’s all.

About the game itself : it tells the story of Mrs. Sheriff that runs after a train and then everything goes KBOOM.

Say that I thought I’d be able to make it in just two days. Silly me.

No compo for me, going jam.

Well, as expected, I am too short on time. Rather than finishing the game roughly and without sound, I decided I’d take one more day and submit it as a jam entry.
Plus it’ll allow me to use musics I didn’t do by myself. Considering my skills, that’s a very good point. Heh.

So anyway, teasing.

24 hours, time to sleep.

I’m being too ambitious with what I want my game to be, so it might end up being a piece of junk. Whatever. I’ll panic tomorrow.

I mean, later today.

What am I even doing

So I’m doing some stuff in the far west that’s waaaay to ambitious for a jam. And consequently, I decided to waste some more time watching the whole Incredibles movie (with Tyu again). Because it’s worth it.

Woops I parralax’d everywhere

Okay so I’m doing a game that has approximately nothing to do with the theme. Also, Tyu and I lost something like 30 minutes watching some scenes from The Incredibles because this movie’s worth it.

Woops, in !

Third LD. Let’s do this.

I’ll use Flash as always (except if I play it yolo and go Unity even though I’m not confident in my skills with it. At all.), plus Photoshop if needed. Music ? Sound ? Fuck.
Sorry I’m being crude.
And as always, teacoffeefriendsandloudmusic.

Now for something totally different (well not totally), I just uploaded a more polished version of my LD26 game, The Minimalism Quest, on Newgrounds and Kongregate. Fyi.

Good luck y’all, see you in 11 hours !

S.W.A.G., a student game

Posted by (twitter: @PolClarissou)

Hi everyone.

I’m working with a bunch of friends (including LD fellahs Pereubu & Toki) on this game called S.W.A.G.
It’s a retro FPS about the 90’s, street crediblity and rap music.

Here’s our prototype, have some screenshots as well (and a trailer at the bottom of this post) :

The game is developed for the french student contest Hits Playtime. It ends tonight, and the projects that gathered the most facebook likes on their page will be selected for the finale.
The point is, we need some right now. Yup, I’m definitely posting it here because we are desperate for likes. So if you feel like it, any like or share would be appreciated ! :3

TL;DR : a cool game, for a french contest, in need of facebook likes to be selected for the finale tomorrow.

Thx & lov’y’all !

The Minimalism Quest – Post mortem

Well, better late than never, huh ?

So here’s my game, The Minimalism Quest.

What went right :

• I did manage my time well enough. In the end, I had half a day just for polishing (and extra sleep). That was nice.
• The game itself is fun and clean ! At least that’s what I’ve been said. Plus it is fast, so people who tried it went to the end.
• Anyway, I am satisfied with it and that’s one good point. And I had a good time making it!

What went wrong :

• The idea itself came late.
• Players had a hard time figuring what to do in some of the scenes – mainly the computer one. Needs moar feedbacks  !
• Also, the time challenge and the “figure what you have to do” challenge didn’t go well together. I thought about killing the timer thing, but this is what gives the game some replayability, so I finally kept it. Maybe I should have activated the timer only at the second playthrough, rather than right at the first one.
• Nobody understands the idea behind the last scene… I wanted the character to get rid of everything he doesn’t consider strictly “necessary”, until he decides his limbs aren’t and mutilates himself. Maybe I should have made it more explicit – he could have litteraly said it or something.
• I really need to get more skills with sound design. REALLY.

What to do next :

• Learn about music and sound design. GODDAMNIT.
• Stick on concepts with more focus on graphics than programming skills – as it is both what I enjoy the most and what I’m the best at.
• I may also want to give the jam a try with some friends of mine – and go further than ever with the pOwEr Of LoOoOoVe ~・✧♥*

PS : my timelapse should soon be online. Link here.
