Hello everyone!

Hector here, founder of PixelOaks. I’m glad to once again have the opportunity in tackling another Ludum Dare. Cant wait to see what everyone comes up with.

We will be participating in the Jam as always.

You can check out our previous submissions here. Also make sure check out our development on Tado Toss.

We will be working mostly in Unity3D, Blender, Gimp and anything else that we might need.

Good luck and have fun!

You can play it HERE!

’10 Second Sentai!’ is a fast pace semi RTS.The world is protected from monsters by the powerful Sentai.

Unfortunately the sentai can only stay transformed for 10 seconds at a time.

Do you have what it takes to be their eye in the sky and lead them to victory?

ScreenShot3

What went well?

  • We managed to get some decent art and animation in within a period of about 24 accumulated hours over the weekend.
  • Got pretty good basic functionality in.
  • The Music
  • Awesome Team

What went not so well?

  • We were only able to program in the Red Sentai.
  • Our lead environment artist had an ongoing power outage and his files didn’t sync completely. We had to make new buildings from scratch.
  • No real goal or win/lose conditions.

Overall I would say this turned out to be a pretty decent prototype.

You can play it HERE!

We are still debating either to go with a brawler or some sort of RTS. Either way there will be lots of Monster on Building action. Can our game be finished in time for our heroes to save the day? Stay tuned for our next progress report on ’10 Second Sentai!’

Here at Pixel Oaks we will be participating.

Our target is the 72-Hour Jam, since the Theme is “Minimalism” we decided to have anyone in our group that wants to participate make a small game on their own.

These games will then be added into a compilation.

We will be using Unity 3D, Blender, Gimp, SFXR, and MyPaint

Good Luck!

EvoDragon post mortem

Posted by (twitter: @pixeloaks)
Wednesday, September 12th, 2012 4:33 pm

Hello Everyone,

First let me apologize for the delay. Thank all of you who played the game, left comments and feedback.

Now on to the Post Mortem:

Things that went well:

  • Unity Is a great engine. Simple to pick up and work with. Curtis, our lead programmer, happens to actually be an artist first, and over the course of a couple of months was able to gain enough knowledge to make a solid game loop.
  • Using Google hangout to coordinate everyone.
  • Blender, My Paint and Gimp provided all of us a smooth pipeline for rapid asset generation.
  • The Aesthetics, the team managed to keep a consistent look throughout the game.
  • Spanking Boars was strangely addictive.
  • Misfit Chris awesome music.

Things to improve:

  • Camera System, It’s hard to see around corners and you could be attacked without warning.
  • High level of difficulty, with high level criteria and no health pick ups, the boars can easily destroy you. Maybe that’s a plus thematically. (Survival of the fittest.)
  • Death bug. It’s a very minimal bug that doesn’t break the game but can be annoying.
  • Add Particles!
  • Improve Animations speeds.
  • Story elements.

The only bad thing that happened during the jam was when we opened the Pixel Oaks hangout to the public, we had a random ‘visitor’ show us his ‘metapod’s’ harden ability. We immediately reconsidered and switched our hangout to private.

Most of the things on the improve list are being worked on as we speak and most have been fixed, but we are also heavily considering making a full game based on the characters of the game.

If you have not done so please play our game and tell us what you think. You can view our entry here. Or click the picture.

Make sure to follow PixelOaks.com for any future indie projects from us.

Cool stuff

  • Great teamwork
  • Using Google hangout was very essential.
  • Unity is a great engine.
  • Supportive friends and family.

Things to update

  • Fix buggy player death
  • Add particles!
  • Make standalone build
  • Fix GUI scaling
  • Secret Mode!
  • Optimize Omniboar spawnrate.
  • Add story panels.
