About the 3D models – Part 1

Posted by (twitter: @pinkmonkeyhead)
Tuesday, April 21st, 2015 10:17 pm

I choose to use Autodesk 123D Catch to make the 3D models because I suck at 3D modeling and I like the details the software provides

(I grabbed the most random stuff I found at home to make the models)

So, taking the bear as example, the software assemble the 3D model from pictures you take of it. The pictures usually are in 2 angles from the ground: one set of pictures in 60 degrees and one set of pictures in 30 degrees, as shown below:

(the blue paper with lots of details under the bear makes it easier for the software to recognise the angles)

After that, software assembles a 3D mesh containing everything in the picture (even the undesired parts):

So I download the model and open on blender to cut these parts and refine the model. You can see that the software create a high vertex model, not optimised for games, so I use a modifier called Decimate to reduce poly number:

(before and after)

On the next post I will talk about the model refinement and the model applied on the game.
Meanwhile you can play against the bear model the curse of the dark mountain in my game: Ice Princess

What if your weapon is… your own children? Would you still use it?

I was very lost in the beginning of the compo, because i didn’t think about anything interesting to do with the theme, so I decided to try new tools like 123D Catch and Unity 5. Then, after a few tests I got inspired.

I was listening to Azealia Bank’s Ice Princess when the idea came through so I’m thinking of giving the song name to the game

What’s up everyone?

For this LD I didn’t have much time so I tried to make the much as possible in the short time I had.

I tried to focus on playability and eye candy factor.

The game has Web, Windows, Mac and Android version (runs great on tablets!)

I hope you guys enjoy.

Carnival Warfare Update

I just received a really awesome review from Jupiter from shoddypixels.com

Carnival Warfare is a game about selling enough stuff at the carnival. This one of the only games that I played several times. The player controls a man at the animal station. He must sell a quota of animals or face losing his job. In order to do this, he must advertise, but not too much as to annoy customers, and keep his station stocked. The more animals that are sold, the better respect the player has. You can trade in respect for upgrades, like a bigger booth that can hold more stock. I really liked the simple but well done graphics to this game. The objects that the children buy at the carnival are then carried around on the peoples heads, which I found to be funny. I was able to last three days in this business, but found it hard to keep my respect when I had to restock. The restock tent is far away from the animal tent and requires the player to walk all the way to it and then back to their own tent to continue playing. This game is challenging and really addicting. http://shoddypixels.com/2014/05/12/ludum-dare-29/
