You are the Hero post mortem

My first successful ludum dare deserves a proper post mortem. So here it is.

I learned from my last attempts that I shouldn’t try something new technic wise. My 7dfps entry helped me realizing this, it’s not easy to write an unknown to me renderer in a short amount of time. Basic impact.js, simple 2D graphics, that was my technical goal. My mind always tricks me into trying out new stuff, but a ludum dare is not the right time for that, at least for me and my programming skills.

The first thing that I did was taking a good shower and proper shave myself. That gave me time to think freely about the theme. Somehow it’s easier to do stuff that doesn’t require thinking and then think about the stuff you want to think about. So I wanted to reverse the theme a little bit and build in a little twist at the end. While progressing in the game it should look like the protagonist goes a little crazy. The transition from that »bad« side to the »good« side is only in the view of protagonist. He just starts mindlessly killing something that seems like an enemy and it seems to even hurt him. Thats why the core mechanic is pretty standard, so the player doesn’t have to think about that and just does what he/she always does. That was the plan.

I tried my best to keep at this, but my graphical skills aren’t that good, I never done so much graphical for one game. That was challenging and took more time that I wanted. I draw the princess last and am not happy with here. Doesn’t really look like a princess…

But I started with the sky and I really liked how that turned out.

If would spend more time with it, I think everything would need a little touch up. So much to do. But that is always the case. I’m pretty satisfied with the result and I will leave it at that.

You can play the game here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-25/?action=preview&uid=7224

I plan on playing some games and rate/comment them. I even wrote myself a little tool to crawl the listing and categories the games into platforms. It’s not easy having a mac and wanting to play most of the games. If you have an interest in the separation of the games into Mac, Web and other Platforms you can see that here: http://think-jeckel.de/stuff/ld/ . A green background means you visited the game entry already, a red one means you didn’t. It’s simple, but at least it will help me.

In two ways. The game is finished and myself, too. But it is done! Woha!

Here: is the entry site: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-25/?action=preview&uid=7224
And you can play it here: http://bureaubureau.de/article/you_are_the_hero/index.html

Good look to those who still do their best. You can do it!

Basic movement is working. Now some stupid ai for the enemies and a attack action.

Yeah, and the whole rest of the sprites… Damn much to do.

I tried to participate in the last two or three compos but there was always something that held me back from finishing. But this time there will be no such thing. I have a free weekend and there will be nothing between me and the compo.

So, what will I use? To get the tecnical part a little bit aside, I will use impact.js and not some not working thing of my own. Maybe with my pseudo 3d renderer, but we will see what the theme brings.

Textmate is still my favorite editor, Chrome my browser and Photoshop my image tool. I have no fricking clue about audio, so let’s see what will happen there.

I’m excited!
