Terraforming Day 2

Posted by (twitter: @dashrava)

Still unnamed (jam) game, where you control a drone who in turn controls a terraforming ship.

Today I did further visual polish to the ship and trees, and some basic particles.

“Terraformed” 1440p wallpaper (click for full size).

Also some initial overworld /goal stuff where your progress is displayed in a hologram above the ship. Will see how I’ll utilise that tomorrow while tying things up. Thinking meteor events or something that destroys your terraformed sectors etc.

And finally background generation, which came with smooth transitions between screens while at it. (direct link in case the below webm embed doesn’t work.)

Break time, so here’s my progress so far.

Super early gameplay featuring a basic character, and various widgets to interact with. They’ll eventually be used to control the harvester ship to grow some sort of plants on a barren planet. Maybe.

Updates via Twitter (link above post) once I continue.

Ludumon WIP 2

My oh-so-meta game Ludumon (jam) is about making monsters pay big time for submitting bad themes.

It also has an authentic voting and twitter simulator between rounds.

Final round and further fleshing out to-do tomorrow.

My oh-so-meta WIP game Ludumon is about slaughtering monsters who submit bad themes for game jams.

Each round you choose the lesser of two evils to spare, eventually ending up with a final round of voting.

Actual gameplay/progression still to be made. But it’s got particles!

Please ignore the blatantly derived background logo still visible for some reason, it was the original title that I’m changing.

Not entirely amused by the last round of voting this time around, but hopefully I’ll be able to find inspiration when the actual theme lands.

Will be using my usual toolset:

My own item editor + loader utils for physics item output.

MaD Lab

MaD Lab

Either vector graphics drawn in Flash, or code-generated graphics from the item format directly.

Box2D

No big plans for audio as usual, might just end up slapping a free bgm track on it, or some basic sfx from freesound and others (but definitely not sfxr because it’s just nasty and overused.)

In again. Birds?

Gameplay: Obviously depending on the theme, but I’ve been browsing silly bird stuff for a couple days now, and really want to do something on that front. Never done a bird game before either, so something with flying maybe.

Programming: FlashDevelop

Language: AS3 or Haxe.

Graphics: Paint.NET (if pixels), Flash (if vectors). Undecided until theme.

Recording: Dxtory (in-game) + OBS (screen recording)

Editing: VirtualDub (mostly) + After Effects (if required)

The Trail WIP

Introducing The Trail: Look! More hidden footprints! Edition (or maybe just “The Trail”, or whatever else I come up with as the weekend nears its end.)

Follow your own trail so you don’t get lost while traversing through interconnected rooms.

Day one pretty much down, still lots to do. It currently only has seven (near-identical) rooms that loop around.

WIP can be played here (it is beatable, and there is no randomization going on.)

Use WASD or arrow keys to move and select options, and E or Space to pick options.

Decisions, decisions.

Initial fiddlery done in the form of a (very basic) level loader, character, basic wall collisions and choice system.

Whenever you choose something, the other choice is locked out. I’m still not entirely sure what that’s going to mean in the end, but at least there’s cake.

Closing in on 4am, forgot these posts are a thing.

No base code or ideas, going to whiteboard something together during the night.

Using Flash/AS3, FlashDevelop, and Paint.NET if pixels.

Under Water WIP

UNDER WATER

Still lots to do, but here’s the WIP so far: Under Water

Been really wanting to make something underwater for a while now, so I kind of jumped in with both feet before making a proper plan.

Nevertheless, I’ve got some shiny particles and waving grass and the customary red box of a character jumping around. Next up is the theme and some actual gameplay.

No libs, just AS3, mostly by myself, some tweaked public code (such as the awesome waving grass).

Terrain generation is based on midpoint displacement, and the particles on a traditional “Falling Sand” setup.

Written in FlashDevelop, all graphics are code generated.

Ideas very much welcome, since the gameplay is still pretty much open at this point.

And feedback obviously.

Indeed in.

First LD, last weekend of vacation.

Going to be making something from scratch, using:

– Flash

– FlashDevelop

– Paint.NET (if pixel art)

– Misc pieces of public code (all of which will be credited)
