Erfingi – Roguelike with a GA twist

Wow, this took more out of me than I expected. I’ll write a better postmortem tomorrow.

A Rougelike with a Genetic Algorithm twist, but you only have 10 seconds to select your heir from all those possible children you have.

Switching from the Jam to the 48 hour.

The original idea was to work with one of the other MurK team members but sadly they haven’t had the time this weekend. I have been working alone on this since it started and going over the rules I’m pretty certain the game qualifies.

Now to just finish this up.

Erfingi – Saturday over status

It’s now 3am and I’ve been at it since 9am. (and from 1-5am the night before).

Tomorrow will be finishing up the GA portion of the game and see how much I have left for polishing. I think I’m very good on time (and I have now jinxed myself haven’t I?)

Here is the latest build and some screenshots. Good night and good luck to those still at it (damn you timezones)

Erfingi – Game Description

It’s a mix of a Roguelike and the lineage system of Rogue Legacy, but it’s going to use genetic algorithms to generate your offspring. But you only have 10 seconds to pick your heir, and they will have mutations that possibly can help or hinder your progress through the cave systems. Those mutations might carry over down, some might not. Choose wisely and be quick about it.

Live stream.

Currently the latest build.

Today will focus on gameplay aspecs and general mechanics.

Tomorrow will be genetic algorithm day. Yay!

Erfingi – A little texture / fog of war / minor improvements

I’m not the texture artist so these don’t look that good, but good enough I think. I still need a texture for the player.

Playable build. (WSAD to move, Click to attack)

  • Textures to the ground / Enemies / Spell effect
  • Fog of war (but it doesnt regrow)
  • Line of sight checks for the spell effects and fog of war, now you cant blast through walls

Next up:

  • Enemy damage
  • End to the maze

  • What happens after you die (it’s a secret until tomorrow)

Explotions and damage.

Going to take a little break. Currently we have:

  • Randomly generated cave
  • Randomly placed enemies
  • Enemies aggro you when in line of sight
  • You can only attack line of sight
  • Enemy health is indicated by their color (yellow to red)

A lot more to come soon. Theme is not in yet, but will. Playable build here.

Known bugs with the Unity Player is that is seems to freeze the tab it was open in when closed. Dont know why. Best bet is to browse to another page and then close it.

Live stream will be back in an hour or so.

We have aggro.

The enemies are starting to be pretty scary.

We have enemies. AoE Damage and a scorched earth as a happy accident. It’s going!

The cave is created

It’s 4:30am. The Jam started at 1am my time. Time for sleep… just a little sleep.

The cave generation is good enough. It seems to create pretty fun structures. Currently using cellular automata to create and massage the cave generation.

The player can now move around and doesn’t collide with the walls.

First Ludum Dare (Jam)

We are MurK, a pretty small dev team from Iceland and are working on a bigger project. We are joining the Jam portion of the Ludum Dare to have fun and make something over the weekend. It’s good to take a break from working on the bigger project to mess around a little.

The Jam is going to be live streamed on our Twitch channel tomorrow. A little work is going to be done tonight when the Jam starts, but it will start at 1am our time.

Cheers and have fun!
