Spheres post mortem

This edition was a lot of fun! For the first time we participated with a concept artist in the team and it was really helpful. We are really happy with the amount of work done even though the game isn’t as polished as we wanted it to be. We decided that our unconventional weapon should be light. Now, it’s time to think about what went right, and what went wrong.

Spheres

Our game is about a guy named Edward, who narrates the whole adventure. He wakes up on a strange island after a night of heavy drinking only to find himself abandoned by his friends. He must find the way off the island, but it won’t be an easy task, because there are strange glowing spheres hunting him. What are they? Where did they come from? Will Edward escape the island? Play the game to find out!

Concept of the game’s map

What went right?

  • Idea – The concept of a game where the narrator guides you through the story and you fight enemies using light turned out even better than we expected.
  • Voice Acting – Thanks to Elijah Lucian we have an amazing voice acting in our game. It sets the mood perfectly and ensures that the player will have a wonderful experience.
  • Art – The game is looking very nice, considering it was made in less than 72 hours!

What went wrong?

  • Fighting – Enemies are very hard to kill at the beginning, but when the player learns how to fight they are too easy to kill and can be dealt with by only one flare.
  • Size of the game – The game takes up a lot of disk space. But the problem is, we don’t know why. Packaged game takes up twice as much space as the project and that’s a really weird behaviour.

To sum it all up, the game needs more time spent on the design side and a little more work on the performance. We think it’s a very interesting concept and if we would go forward with it the game could turn out pretty great. We’re considering the post-compo version, but we’ll make the decision after the voting ends. Now we just want to gather feedback.

The game didn’t turn out so bad, but we could have done much better. We planned definitely too much and because of that we did not have almost any time to polish our game. This is very bad, since every game is better when it features less content but very good and polished than when it features more content but has bugs etc. Let’s just hope we’ll learn from this experience and do better next time!

After 18 hours of Ludum Dare 32, we have finished the game’s script including all texts spoken by the main character. We are still working on the map and it’s to early to show some in game footage, so we’ll show some concept arts and the main character – Edward:

We are very happy to participate again, as Ludum Dare is a lot of fun! This time I’ll be working with three friends. Two of us are in for the third time, and the other two are in for the first time. Sadly, we will have only about 48 hours of making a game because we have classes on our university on the 3rd day.

Tools we’ll be using:

  • Programming language: C++
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 4
  • Art: 3DS Max, Photoshop, ZBrush
  • Audio: We will see

Our setup:

Me and my friend are in for the second time. Our first Ludum Dare was an amazing experiance and we were looking forward to the next one. Sadly, we will have only about 36 hours of making a game because we’ll be away on the 3rd day.

Tools we’ll be using:

  • Language: C++
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 4

Invasion – Post Mortem

Posted by
Wednesday, August 27th, 2014 11:19 am

Ludum Dare 30 ended and it’s time to present our game and think about what went right and what went wrong. It was our first Ludum Dare. It was an amazing experience for us and we had a lot of fun but no time to sleep as there were so many things to do. 😀 The theme was nice and we came up with an idea for a game very fast. We’ve created a game called Invasion.

Invasion

It is a game about a group of warriors. Three districts of Derp nation decided to join forces and invade their world. They want to connect it to their own so that they can capture theirs territory(and probably enslave them). You play as one of the warriors and you’re being sent to defend the “Core Tower”. Electric core held inside the tower is generating an inter-dimensional shield and it’s the only thing that’s stopping Derps. It’s already getting weaker and Derps managed to connect some parts of their world to yours. If the core gets destroyed, there will be no hope left…

The game features local multiplayer so that you can team up with your friends and fight the Derps together!

What went right?

Invasion – Screenshot from map – Fireline Games

  • Idea – the concept of wave defense in cel-shaded cartoony art style
  • Zombies – as “nerd burglars” said in one of the comments below our submission “You pretty much can’t go wrong with Zombies!”
  • Art – Invasion looks pretty nice for a game that was made in 72 hours
  • Cooperation – Fighting with the help of your friends makes a game much more interesting

What went wrong?

Invasion – Four players gameplay – Fireline Games

  • Unfinished gameplay – Unfortunately, we wasted a lot of time on characters and their animations because we had a lot of problems with them. As a result, we didn’t manage to add everything we designed to the game
  • Balancing – The game is pretty unbalanced. Ninja’s speed doesn’t compansate his lower damage and you can’t play as Geek unless you have a team to gather coins for you
  • Performance – Invasion might be a little bit laggy for some players. We couldn’t fix this before the deadline, because we didn’t know what caused the framerate to be a little bit choppy. Maybe if we find out we’ll release a fix for that.

To sum it all up, this game just needs more time. We feel that this is an interesting concept and if done right could be really fun. What about the post-compo version? We’re considering it.

Play the game HERE

If you liked the game please leave feedback on our site. We really appriciate this. :)

After 62 hours of work we have an Alpha version of our game. We have everything ready except sounds, music and controls screen. There are also a few bugs, but we hope we will get that game ready for deadline! 😀 Continue reading for some info about the game.

What is our game about?

Three districts of Derp nation decided to join forces and invade your world. They want to connect it to their own so that they can capture your territory. You play as one of the warriors sent to defend the “Core Tower”. Electric core held inside the tower is generating an inter-dimensional shield and it’s the only thing that’s stopping Derps.
